MUSIC: HIPOLOGY IS? – “A montage of elements, events, music and fashion that make up an individuals personal interpretation of Hip Hop culture.” (BBE RECORDS)

Visioneers new album “Hipology” is due out soon and to remind you all just how good its going to be, here is something from the Visioneers vaults. If you would like to review the forthcoming album …. find out more here

Hipology

Since the late 80s Londoner Marc Mac has been converting audiences with his sophisticated take on urban soul. A hybrid concoction of breakbeat, nu-jazz, neo soul, drum and bass, and Hip Hop, its a polished sound plugged directly into the emotional highway of 21st century city living. Working under a variety of guises, his prodigious output includes his work as one half of 4hero, Visioneers, Natures Plan and Nu Era. In the late 90‘s Marc signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talking Loud Records with 4hero. 4hero went on to produce two classic albums with Talkin Loud icluding the award winning “Two Pages” & “Creating Patterns” they then set up their own label where the critically acclaimed “Play With The Changes” was released. Somewhere in this timeline, between producing music for Jill Scott to Roy Ayers, Phonte to ! Terry C! allier, Marc started another project called Visioneers releasing a set of limited 7” singles getting the attention from top eclectic DJ’s including Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay. Visioneers was then picked up by BBE records who released the debut album “Dirty Old Hip Hop”.

While recording this new Visioneers record, Mac began thinking how hip-hop had been a (sometimes invisible) guiding hand in his life. “The music, the fashion and culture. Although producing all kinds of music from jungle to jazz, hip-hop (or at least what is was) has always been a part of what I do in some strange and sometimes very subtle way.” Documenting this influence on Hipology.org, his very own digital scrapbook (that has also spawned the record of the same title), it’s easy to see the depth of Mac’s appreciation of hip-hop. HIPOLOGY; the album includes hand picked guest John Robinson, Notes To Self, TRAC & Baron alongside some featured musicians Luke Parkhouse, Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra & The Support Horns. The result is a real cool, funky eclectic mix of breaks,! beats, soul/jazz and freaky squeaks a great follow up ! to the debut album.

HIPOLOGY IS?

Hip.ol.ogy

“A collage or montage of elements, events, music and fashion that make up an individuals personal interpretation of Hip Hop culture.”

“They have a right to speak on it the way they see it coming up. Hip-hop is the voice of this generation. Even if you didn’t grow up in the Bronx in the ’70s, hip-hop is there for you.”
Kool Herc

Looking at your own reflection you may wonder… who are you?; Adidas sneakers, baseball caps, Timberland boots, Cazal style glasses, Varsity jackets, Nike tees & hoodies and then take a look through your DVD shelf, books or music collection… Coltrane, James Brown, Mary J Blige and even a Led Zeplin album. why?… well for me it all stems from growing up listening to hip-hop; that’s what we call Hipology.
maybe you grew up in Tokyo or London and listen to hip-hop or even New York or maybe Paris… everyone’s personal experiences and perception may be different and thats what we call Hipology. When these experiences are shared the picture of hip-hop culture becomes even bigger. Hipology.

While recording a new Visioneers record in 2011-2012 I started thinking about how much Hip Hop has played a under current role through my life. The Music, The Fashion and Culture. Although producing all kinds of music from Jungle to Jazz, Hip Hop (or at least what is was) has always been a part of what I do in some strange and sometimes very subtle way. So this kinda inspired me to start up this Website, it’s just like a little scrap book and a way for me to join some dots up, shout out some greats and try get the story straight. yeah so that’s it.

Marc Mac

WHY NOW?

This came about due to the overwhelming disappointment with the closure of so many GREAT music venues in Sydney recently. So we felt the time was right to organise a local music communal get together for the locals who have been supporting the music and venues we all love.

We will have a Sound System, Decks & Mic set up, so if you are keen to help out with music or a mini show case, let us know via FB or e-mail.

Peace,

From your good friends at

Soul of Sydney & Tone

GRAMMY® award winning artist Erykah Badu is touching down in Australia this summer in what is sure to be the hottest ticket of the season.

Forging her own path in soul music and almost single-handedly directing the genre since the ’97 debut Baduizm, Badu’s releases have always demanded critics attention, whilst her live shows incite rapturous engagement from audiences as she bursts through hits like On & On, Love Of My Life, Apple Tree, Tyrone, Bag Lady, Window Seat and more.

Her latest release New Amerykah Part II (Return Of The Ankh) further pushed the boundaries of contemporary soul music, enlisting the work of previous collaborators James Poyser and Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson (The Roots, Al Green) as well as cutting edge producers like Madlib, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Karriem Riggins (Diana Krall) and the late J Dilla.

Erykah Badu will perform live for the very first time in her own headline shows in Australia, offering fans their first taste to see her in concert in exquisite and historic venues such as Sydney Opera House, Melbourne’s Palais Theatre and Perth’s picturesque Kings Park. For the latter two events, she will be joined by New Zealand’s Fat Freddy’s Drop.

The enigmatic seven piece soul act have won the world over with their hypnotic live performances which translate their impeccable records to a live setting in a similarly dynamic fashion to Badu’s razor sharp band. Their last album ‘Live At Roundhouse London’ showcased the incredible live show, which takes in highlights from their albums ‘Based On A True Story’ and ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’ and Australian audiences may be in for a taste of new material, which is hinted at a mid 2012 release.

Do not miss the captivating Erykah Badu as she tours across Australia for the first time in her own headline shows, joined by Fat Freddy’s Drop in Melbourne and Perth for some of the most musically exquisite engagements of the summer programme.

ERYKAH BADU AUSTRALIAN TOUR PETITION

Click —-> ERYKAH BADU AUSTRALIAN FACEBOOK PETITION

It’s time to make some noise for one of the pioneers of the Neo Soul movement – ERYKAH BADU! From the lady that brought us classics like “Didn’t Cha Know”, “Bag Lady”, “I Want You”, “Ye-Yo”, “On&On”, “Tyrone” and “Love of My Life (Hip Hop)”, Erykah Badu has made an indelible mark in the music industry not only as a creative genius, but as an original artist in a league of her own.  Badu seamlessly fuses organic sounds of  African rhythms, to Hip Hop, to Jazz, Soul to Funk. As a mother, singer/songwriter, producer and entertainer she can hypnotize an audience without the overbearing  trait of preaching a movement – she just lives it.

After rumours of having been denied to perform for Peats Ridge Festival 09/10, a petition has been created via Facebook to let major promoters know that there is a fanbase in Australia. The petition aims to make some waves in the industry with the desired outcome of a future Australian tour! Her new album NEW AMERYKAH Pt.II: Return of the Ankh will be released on the 25th of February, 2010 which sees her collaborate with multiple artists from Jay Electronica, 9th Wonder, Shafiq Husayn of SA RA, Madlib, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Lil Wayne and Bilal to name a few. Honorable mention goes to J DILLA for the use of his production  beyond the grave in the collaboration track entitled ‘LOVE’.

The Erykah Badu petition in essence is all about music – her music, and the heart of the petition is YOU – her fans. Music is our universal language. You know it. I know it. It’s that knowing smile we’ve all experienced. Sometimes we wish the world could take it’s time with us. But it doesn’t. Music is the only thing that can make us take control and say ‘world, you gotta wait…cos my jams on!’

It’s the tingles, the goosebumps, it’s the headnod, it’s the smile….it’s losing ourselves in the moment….it just is.

Music speaks, moves, inspires, instills faith, HEALS and encourages strength through boldness!!

LET’S BE BOLD!
