About ★ JOHN MORALES /

We take remixes for granted these days, but in the ’70s, a handful of DJs and engineers were literally putting the form together with their own hands. The Bronx-born DJ John Morales was one of these early splicers, making extended edits and medleys at a time when he found most tracks too short to work well in his sets. Cutting his teeth at Bob Blank’s Blank Tapes studio and gaining fans like disco über-producer Patrick Adams, Morales embedded himself in New York’s music world, and as the ’70s rolled into the ’80s, Morales grew ever more in-demand for his eminently club-ready tweaks of everyone from Hall & Oates to The Rolling Stones. Along with his partner Sergio Munzibai, he established one of the top remix brands of the era: the M&M mix. Morales spent some time out of the game over the last few decades, but in 2009, BBE released the first of three compilations of M&M mixes, which turned the spotlight back on his considerable contribution to dance music.

WORD TRAVELS FESTIVAL 2013 PRESENTS:
This will be Ursula’s only full set in the festival!
US performance artist Ursula Rucker, is the queen of spoken-word. One of the strongest female poets performing today. Critics have compared Ursula to celebrated writers like Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni.

Ursula is known for award-winning solo albums like Silver and Lead as well as her work with The Roots. She created a spoken word contribution for The Roots debut album, Do You Want More?

Her track Unlocking, which closed the album, introduced Ursula to the world of progressive hip-hop and led to subsequent invitations to collaborate on The Roots albums.

Ursula’s work has been described as part of a growing movement that is slowly adapting its aural sensibilities to women, particularly in hip-hop and urban music. Ursula plays an essential role in the rise of a new crop of female recording artists who deliver strong, intelligent, and a visionary feminine flavour.

Sydney spoken-word powerhouse Candy Royalle opens the evening with her own stage-shaking poetry. Candy is a multi-disciplinary poet and artist who combines powerfully-crafted stories with theatrics, vocal harmonies and a can’t-look-away charisma.

She has performed her work both nationally and internationally from the Sydney Writers Festival to festivals in the UK and Spain. Candy recently won the Nimbin Performance Poetry World Cup. She just returned from Texas and the Austin Poetry Festival. She has appeared in the SMH, Daily Telegraph, on ABC Radio and CNN.

This is a throw-down is put together strictly for the love, for a good cause with ticket/donation profits go directly to the station to help keep the radio station on air for Sydney.

About DP ONE
—————–

Born, raised, and still residing in Brooklyn, New York, Daniel A. Pinero p.k.a DP One has spent most of his life immersed in Hip Hop. As a DJ, b-boy, and even occasionally lacing the mic with some rhymes as an emcee, he puts an immense amount of effort into keeping Hip Hop moving in a positive direction. Besides spinning at parties and b-boy jams around the New York City area as an active member of the Heavy Hitters and Turntable Anihilists, he serves as a resident DJ of two internet radio shows, and has toured internationally with notable artists such as Lauryn Hill, Estelle, John Legend, J-Live, Q-Unique, and Wordsworth. He has also been involved in various high-profile events such as the first Red Bull BC One battle in North America, which was held in New York City and hosted by KRS One.

Born in 1977, DP One began to hone his DJ skills at the young age of fourteen, in the midst of what many consider to be the “Golden Era” of Hip Hop. As a DJ he credits a lot of his foundation to the Alava family, who had the first DJ setup DP ever laid his eyes upon. It was with the Alavas that he deejayed his first house parties, which served as his first glimpses into life as a DJ. Additionally, DJ’s Enuff, Vandal, and Tchak Nasty introduced him to battle videos, taught him his first scratch patterns, and inspired him to enter his first competition. He was later exposed to b-boying by A-B-Girl of the Domestic Apes Crew, which proved to be advantageous to his career as a DJ. He became familiar with break beats and the type of music that brought out the best in various dancers, and applied this knowledge to spinning at b-boy jams and battles, establishing his name as one of the premier talents in the scene. DP, an active member of the Universal Zulu Nation and Supreme Beings, served as the resident DJ of the well-known Braggin’ Rites battles, which have been re-established as of October 2009, and also held down the wheels of steel at notable battles such as Kings of NY, Bboy Massacre, the 2007 Zulu Nation Anniversary, The Battle On Shaolin, and the Skill Methodz 10th Year Anniversary.

While he was making a name for himself amidst the b-boys and b-girls of New York City, DP was still making sure that he was making moves in other realms of Hip Hop as well. As his DJ career progressed, he had the opportunity to DJ for the likes of Miri-Ben-Ari, Lauryn Hill, The Fugees, Estelle and John Legend. His cuts and scratches have been featured on a multitude of tracks, including those of artists such as Pumpkinhead, Jadakiss, Marco Polo, Immortal Technique, Kurious Jorge and Statik Selektah. He also teamed up with DJ’s Blowout, Xplor, and GI Joe to form a crew known as Turntable Anihilists, who have been living up to the name for quite a few years by releasing various mixtapes that have received positive reviews, including the Fire Your DJ and Underworld series. He has also appeared on TV shows such as MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 episode about Star Trak recording artist Teyana Taylor. DP even performed in a Broadway play entitled Soular Power’d, produced by Kwik Step and Rokafella of Full Circle Productions. This opened the door to another Broadway opportunity in the form of NY Hip Hop Legends, produced by Rennie Harris. Both productions ran successfully for three weeks at the prestigious New Victory Theatre in NYC. Besides performing in New York hotspots such as SOB’s and the Nuyorican Poets Café, DP One has performed on various continents, rocking shows in Colombia, South Africa, Japan, Iceland and in nearly every country in Western Europe. Currently, thanks in part to the growth of technology and the internet, DP one showcases his talent for free to the world, in the form of two internet radio shows. He is one of the resident DJ’s for The Wax Cafe on pncradio.fm from 5pm to 7pm (EST) Fridays, with host Social Ebonics. He also appears every Wednesday night on The B Side with DJ Enuff & DJ Quiz from 10pm to 12am onwww.alistradio.net.

Although DP One places emphasis on showcasing the positivity that Hip Hop has to offer to the world and making sure that he is contributing to the progression of the various art forms that it encompasses, he takes this same approach to a smaller scale and strives for progression on a personal level. As a person who is constantly seeking to learn different scratch patterns, perfect a new routine, and dig through crates for hidden gems, he continues to grow and expand his knowledge and skills as a b-boy, DJ, and emcee, as styles, music, and technology evolve as well. The sky is the limit for DP One as he looks forward to nothing but bigger and better things to come in the future.

We are so blessed to have you all at our jams, and in our lives. Thank you all for the support. we hope we can see you all down there at our 2nd birthday.

★ABOUT KON:
“Those BBE records were just phenomenal. I think (he was) very much ahead of the curve when it comes to just digging that much deeper and ever since all those came out, there’s been a whole heap of new generation compilations – very next level stuff. Where the hell can you get all that music from?! Proper diggers!” – Gilles Peterson

There are only a handful of DJ’s worldwide with a reputation widely acknowledged as being one of the best. Known amongst his peers as the best disco DJ, a detailed crate digger, and an innovative producer with direct access to master tapes only a rare breed of producer’s are able to access, KON remains one of the most respected producer’s responsible for the re-emergence of disco with his innovative re-edits of soul, funk and disco classics. His re-edits have propelled him as one of the most sought after producers across the globe, cementing his authority in the music industry.

Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Kon has built his career spanning over 20 years centred on his first love of crate digging. One half of critically acclaimed Kon & Amir (BBE), whereby together, they introduced rare grooves to a wider audience, Kon’s solo efforts began years prior to the union of Kon & Amir. Crate digging from 1976, DJing from 1985, progressing on to rocking club floors from 1991 till present, his love affair with vinyl and expertise is often called upon by many heavy weights from Kanye West, and Dr. Dre to name but a couple.

Kon’s DJing ability traverses many genres, professing the element of versatility as the key to a successful DJ, naming Spinna, Kenny Dope and Bobbito Garcia as successful DJ’s, due to their versatile sets.

With a new original album released on BBE called “On My Way” available now, the 11 track album features mostly unfamiliar vocalists such Amy Douglas, Georg Levin, with the exception of Ben Westbeech – a name synonymous within the current Soul community. Think sweeping strings, sporadic slap bass, and a multi-dimensional, floor thumping disco revival.

Sydney audiences will hear the rare selection masterminded by Kon as he plays a very special set at SOUL OF SYDNEY 2nd Birthday event on the 17th of November, 2013 – Venue is a secret oasis in the city! KON is a unique visionary, a remarkable DJ with the history of music at his fingertips. Prepare to throw down!

★ABOUT SOUL OF SYDNEY
Created in November 2009, Soul of Sydney is an independent, artist run collective who are bonded by a love of ‘funk’ based music. Our people include DJ’s, Musicians, Producers, Dancers & Designers who have come together to promote and support the music we love in this city, and the street culture around it.

Soul of Sydney Block Party is our monthly Sunday musical afternoon (12-9pm) feast. Focused on a family orientated get together, DJ’s, Record Collectors, B-boys & B-Girls, and musicians come down to share & enjoy some of the music they love in a completely different environment, outside of bars or clubs.
We have an ‘open decks, open mic & open dance floor’ policy just to keep it personal and give everyone a chance to do their thing where locals can come down as our guests outside of a usual club set.

Music styles generally sit at a safe middle ground of Soul, Funk, Disco and a fair bit of Jazz & golden era hip hop stuff too with artists James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, De La Soul, J Dilla, Stevie Wonder, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Larry Levan amongst the playlist.

He also appears every Wednesday night on The B Side with DJ Enuff & DJ Quiz from 10pm to 12am on www.alistradio.net.

About Say Whut?!
After surviving a collision with a tanker truck filled with milk and toxic waste (it was a special truck) when he was just a boy, DJ SayWhut?! was in a coma for 4 years where he dreamt of nothing but cheeseburgers. When he awoke he found that he had the ability to hear lower end frequencies very clearly and could foresee what the next song was going to be chosen (in shuffle mode) on a person’s iPod from 100 yards away. The iPod was then invented 15 years later. This brought on a revelation that he should play music in some form or another. When making fart noises with his armpits wasn’t enough he decided to pick up the headphones and become a DJ.
Cutting his teeth as a breakbeat DJ in Sydney in 2004, DJ SayWhut?! has always been known to play some of the funkiest basslines in breaks – keeping it hard and bouncy yet keeping the people dancing on the floor. With residencies at Broke’n’beats @ Kink and Chinese Laundry, SayWhut?! has played to a wide variety of crowds knocking them senseless to the floor with his barrage of bassline melodies and quick mixing ability. After the breakbeat phenomenon went out of fashion, SayWhut?! looked towards more organic sounds and started playing funk, soul, disco, boogie, hip hop and R&B still staying true to that funky bassline mentality.

Catch DJ Say Whut?! playing some regular residencies around town Ravisis in Bondi, at our Soul of Sydney Block Parties & this weeks ‘History of Hip Hop’ special as part of Sydney Fringe Festival.
