EVENT: Afrobeat Powerhouse Antibalas in Sydney March 12 @ Factory Theatre

Tickets & Party Info HERE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMXlEqlnAIg&feature=player_embedded

Born in a Brooklyn warehouse in 1997, 12-piece ensemble Antibalas is credited with introducing Afrobeat to a wider global audience, influencing countless musicians and developing a live show that is the stuff of legend. The group has performed everywhere from Central Park to Carnegie Hall to Rikers Island Prison, and that’s just in New York. On the heels of the hit musical FELA!,

which several members collaborated on, Antibalas has reunited with former member and producer Gabe Roth, who was at the helm for their first three albums. The world famous Daptone Records released the band’s first album in five years, self-titled, in late 2012.

Inspired by economic meltdowns and global uprisings, Antibalas piled into two rooms at Daptone’s House of Soul Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn to cut an explosive new set of afrobeat classics. “Dirty Money” launches the propulsive six-song LP with deep, pulsating rhythms, monstrous horns and tight funk. Lead singer Amayo – a native of Lagos, Nigeria and senior Kung Fu master – guides the band through cathartic workouts of call and response, dynamic instrumentals and eruptive solos.

Members of Antibalas served as musical directors and the house band in the Broadway hit FELA! and penned original music for the show. Members have also recently collaborated/performed with Iron and Wine, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Mark Ronson, TV on the Radio and The Roots.

AUSTRALIAN AFRO-BEAT: The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra launch This Saturday @ Oxford Arts Factory Feat. The Liberators & Gian Arpino + Free Album Download

Friday 16th Sept – Gearins Hotel, Katoomba
Saturday 17th Sept – Oxford Art Factory, Sydney
Fri 23rd Sept @ The Corner, Melbourne

“I love good afrobeat stuff. I love this” Richard Kingsmill, triple j

“Close your eyes and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were hearing and all-black group from Nigeria ” – Lynden Barber, The Australian

One of Australia’s most exciting (and largest) bands, Melbourne’s Public Opinion Afro Orchestra are hitting the road to launch their new 7” single ‘Mr Clean (Pts 1 & 2),’ available in September on Hope Street Recordings through all good record stores.

2010 proved a watershed year for the seventeen strong ensemble, with breakthrough performances at WOMADelaide which resulted in worldwide support through Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 1 program. Their debut album “Do Anything, Go Anywhere’ was also nominated for an ARIA Award. The group returned to the studio before emerging triumphantly for a set at the 2011 Byron Bay Blues & Roots Festival, which you can download at the groups website for nix

http://www.thepublicopinion.net/2011/05/live-album-available-for-free-download/

With a unique understanding of Afrobeat, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra trace elements of the genre created by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, an add modern elements like MCs and turntablism all with a definitive world perspective stemming from the lineage of the groups members, which comes from all corners of the globe.

Melbourne is in for a bit of a Hope Street Recordings family affair with labelmates The Bombay Royale also launching their new 7” and high school super band The Cactus Channel (recently featured on an EPK by Los Angeles tastemaker Jeremy Sole) plus radio personality and POAO member DJ Manchild in support.

Sydney and Katoomba stages will see The Liberators in equally funky and appropriate support. The group recently released their debut self titled album on Italian based label Record Kicks to worldwide acclaim, including a plug in Rolling Stone Magazine.

The spirit of Fela is alive and well and with Australia one of the most unexpected places to find it, you can expect to be blown away when these guys touch down in your town.

Niche Productions Presents: This 11 piece live afrobeat/funk/soul/latin band is simply one of the best live bands in the world and features eleven of the hottest and baddest musicians New York has to offer.

This is high energy, rhythmic, contagious and political music that turns your shoes into dancing machines and your hips into a frenzy. Antibalas has been a fixture at the crossroads of international music since their humble Brooklyn beginnings in 1998. As a group entity, they are largely responsible for reviving and innovating an obscure but dynamic style of music known as afrobeat, tirelessly spreading its gospel to over thirty countries around the world, from New York’s Rikers Island Prison to the stage of Carnegie Hall, from Tokyo to Turkey.

As collaborators, they have worked with artists such as Paul Simon, TV on the Radio, Baaba Maal, Burning Spear, Public Enemy, The Roots, Angelique Kidjo, Sinead O’Connor, and Medeski, Martin and Wood. In addition, members of Antibalas have made their imprint on recordings by Mark Ronson, Ornette Coleman, Amy Winehouse, Beck, The Foals, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and countless other bands from underground to multi-platinum, spanning the genres of funk, jazz, soul, rock, and experimental music

In 2009, members of Antibalas have arranged the music for, and are also performing on Broadway in FELA! a musical about the African icon and afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Gilles Peterson is one of BBC1’s favourite presenters, with his blessing deeming an artist worldwide success. From humble beginnings as an acid jazz DJ to hosting one of the most popular radio shows worldwide, Gilles has been responsible for aiding the careers of many of the musicians around today.

In 2006 Gilles launched his most recent record labal ‘Brownswood Recordings’ after the street he used to live on. To date the label has released records by British singer/songwriter Ben Westbeech, 45 piece live act The Heritage Orchestra, Japanese punk jazz band Soil & “Pimp” Sessions, Brooklyn based pianist Elan Mehler, jazz vocalist José James, and two volumes of a soulful compilation album series called Brownswood Bubblers.
