A few weeks back we were lucky enough to catch Melbourne’s Future Soul artist EMRSN live a when he was performing before TUXEDO & honestly, we were totally blown away by the richness of his vocals and the warmth of the production from the second we heard his sound.
We are continually in awe of the amount of the world class Australian artists who are really flying the flag for our scene. EMRSN is one of the new breed of local Future Soul acts we very much recommend you check out.
His latest releases “Down” sees EMRSN join forces with Jarreau Vandal – producer for international music collective Soulection. Teeming with his soulful vocals and dance floor feeling this is without doubt a jam you will hear us dropping in mixes and live sets.
“Down” is taken from EMRSN’s forthcoming debut album “TMRW” scheduled for release in early 2016.
This is the first in a series called the Ghetto Discotheque. The plan was to do a mix of tunes I love both old and new with a focus firmly on the Funk. Enjoy…
Massive thanks to Big Ted for the vocal drops and to Prodigal Youth for the artwork. Nuff respect fellas…

Red Bull Beat Suite is set to smash every conceived musical boundary – creating an entirely original, never-before-heard musical exploration, mixing together the nation’s best beat makers, musicians from the Australian Youth Orchestra as well as special guest vocalists including US soul singer, Aloe Blacc who will all feature on the same stage for two shows only on Saturday 12th May, at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
This very special event will be an orchestral exploration of the last 20 years of electronic and beat music combining two diverse musical worlds, setting a musical precedent by bringing the contemporary and classical worlds together on the one stage for the very first time in Australia.
Fans can expect to hear Australia’s best beat makers including two turntablists, a 15 piece orchestra, bass player, percussionist plus the hottest guest vocalists to produce a show like never before. The show will feature the talent of Ladi6, DJ Perplex, Amin Payne, Scratch 22 and Galapagoose. This innovative musical mash up will be cast under the intrepid direction of Australia’s own maestro and composer, Tamil Rogeon, who is charged with conducting a bunch of people who quite frankly, don’t belong in the same room – let alone the same stage! Red Bull Beat Suite is the creation of curator and creative director of the event, Kano Hollamby.
Red Bull Beat Suite is a rare opportunity to push the envelope and drive forth innovation by fusing together cultures that would normally play in very different playgrounds. The event will provide opportunities for the young guns of classical music to work with those from a hip hop and electronic music background – an unexpected collaboration with mind-blowing results.
Utilising their own award winning 3d projection mapping technologies, Melbourne’s own and world renown ENESS studios will create a never before seen interactive visual display to accompany this cutting edge performance.
Red Bull Beat Suite will debut at the stunning and musically paramount Melbourne Recital Centre, which is excited to be part of this exciting fusion – be the first to witness this cutting edge musical experiment.

ABOUT THIS EVENT
Red Bull Beat Suite is a drawing together of cultures which is as ambitious as it is thrilling. Take the nation’s best beat makers, put them on stage with the Australian Youth Orchestra, throw in US soul singer and hip hop luminary Aloe Blacc plus special guest singers and musicians, and cast them under the intrepid direction of The Raah Project’s Tamil Rogeon.
Red Bull Beat Suite is homage to the last 20 years of urban beats and electronic music genres, told by Australia’s and the world’s most cutting edge musicians, producers and vocalists through a ‘mix tape’ of orchestra, turntables and live beats.
Adding to the experience, Melbourne’s own and world renown ENESS will create a never before seen interactive visual display, utilising their own award winning 3D projection mapping technologies.

She’s toured worldwide with renowned Australian roots reggae band Blue King Brown (as their former backing singer) but this year Jess Harlen has decided to focus on her own music, cooking up some fresh new tracks.
Park Yard Slang is the second album by the Melbourne based artist which was released on March 30, 2012 through Obese Records. It is evident that there has been a significant shift of events in Harlen’s music since the release of Neon Heartache, 2011 LP (through Plethora Records).
Both albums were produced by renowned award-winning producer, Plutonic Lab. Therefore with the collaboration of two talented musicians bringing out a string of various skills – not to mention Harlen’s sweet and soothing voice, it was anticipated that we’d have sheer quality. And that’s what we got!
The opening and aptly titled track “Get Ready” is an appropriate introductory song to the album. With enticing vocals and the catchy beat it is already ample to draw the listener into further exploration of Park Yard Slang. Title track “Park Yard Slang” is a nice transition maintaining the slow tempo before “Weaving”. Here the tempo slightly builds up leading into jaunty, upbeat rock style track “Let You Down”, the first single released off the album. Reggae, dancehall influenced “Plantation” features Melbourne based reggae artist RuCL.
“Colliding” is a romanticised ‘feel good’ song that seems to depict the themes of patience and beauty. “Reach Home” is an emotive; melancholic yet encouraging and promising song about being courageous, facing present fears and of the past, insecurities and worries in order to overcome them. Harlen switches to the ukulele where the listener is gently lullabied with “Day Dreamer”, followed by another encouraging and humbling track, “Up To Me”.
Then follows “Beautiful Struggle” which illustrate life as full of love, pain, disappointment and change but also encourages the listener to accept it as inevitable as it is – a beautiful struggle. One is encouraged to take the responsibility of moving forward. Finally, one could say that “Silence” is another aptly titled track to top off the album.
Overall, Harlen maintains humility in her songwriting, which are personal reflections that people can relate to. It’s a courageous and great thing to see that there is more experimentation with the incorporation of different instruments and a variety of genres including soul, acoustic, reggae, dancehall and rock influences, producing something fresh and versatile to listen to. Harlen is definitely an artist to look out for this year!
Park Yard Slang is available on iTunes, JB Hi-Fi stores and other good music stores.

Illusive is thrilled to announce the first ever Australian tour by legendary New York producer/DJ, Pete Rock. The self proclaimed Soul Brother #1 hits Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth in January 2012.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, Pete Rock first rose to prominence as part of the hugely influential duo Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth. From there, he has embarked on an unrivaled production and solo career spanning two decades, seeing him produce iconic records for Run DMC, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Ghostface Killah and Redman to name a few. He is credited as playing a major role in the merging of elements of jazz and funk into hip hop music, and has most recently been brought back into rap’s consciousness with his production on Jay-Z & Kanye West’s ‘Watch The Throne’ album (‘The Joy’).
The man has a record collection that clocks well into the 90,000s and a resume featuring the likes of ‘Down With The King’, ‘The World is Yours’, ‘Shut ‘em Down’ and ‘T.R.O.Y’. His highly acclaimed live show is a journey through the mind of one of the most influential musicians of the past few decades. Don’t miss it.

Updated INFO:
We have a few spots near Alexandria but waiting to see if the weather holds up, if it is blue sky’s then we are in business and will be sending an sms blast out of where you can be found.
Few points that might help you organize you day better;
· It is a family friendly picnic first and foremost so could be a good idea really to pack an eski/ picnic basket, fruit, drinks and something to sit on etc.
· We have a spot with a stack of grass around with plenty of room for kids, it is 5 mins from city around Alexandria, there is shade but best people bring some hats etc. \
· We will have a basic DJ set up playing everything from Sade to James Brown to De La Soul, Erykah Badu & Masters At Work. It is open decks with rotating DJ’s (but best people get in touch via email if keen to play to confirm time slots)
· We are hoping to kick off by 12pm till around 5 or 6
· We will be waiting for the weather forecast before we make the call as it is outdoors, if it does look like it’s going to rain then we will simply move till next sunny Sunday. (We will be in touch later in the week via email and on the day via SMS in case we have to move the party so we will need your Mob. details too.)
· If you are a local Musician, Mc, Singer, Percussionist or DJ then we are very keen to hear from you if you would like to play, especially if you down to play percussion along the Djs in an open jam vibe for Sunday. (we are hoping to get thing going as a regular Sunday afternoon local soul funk and hip hop open jam session so if your keen to be part of it let us know)
· For local Soul music fan then we simply wants you there enjoying the music, so get a group of friends together, spared the word and come down for a day out it the park.
This came about due to the overwhelming disappointment with the closure of so many GREAT music venues in Sydney recently. So we felt the time was right to organise a local music communal get together for the locals who have been supporting the music and venues we all love.
We will have a Sound System, Decks & Mic set up, so if you are keen to help out with music or a mini show case, let us know via FB or e-mail.

Sunday 19th Feb – Sydney Opera House Wednesday 22nd Feb – Palais – Melbourne with Fat Freddy’s Drop
Saturday 25th Feb – Kings Park & Botanic Garden – Perth with Fat Freddy’s Drop
GRAMMY® award winning artist Erykah Badu is touching down in Australia this summer in what is sure to be the hottest ticket of the season.
Forging her own path in soul music and almost single-handedly directing the genre since the ’97 debut Baduizm, Badu’s releases have always demanded critics attention, whilst her live shows incite rapturous engagement from audiences as she bursts through hits like On & On, Love Of My Life, Apple Tree, Tyrone, Bag Lady, Window Seat and more.
Her latest release New Amerykah Part II (Return Of The Ankh) further pushed the boundaries of contemporary soul music, enlisting the work of previous collaborators James Poyser and Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson (The Roots, Al Green) as well as cutting edge producers like Madlib, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Karriem Riggins (Diana Krall) and the late J Dilla.
Erykah Badu will perform live for the very first time in her own headline shows in Australia, offering fans their first taste to see her in concert in exquisite and historic venues such as Sydney Opera House, Melbourne’s Palais Theatre and Perth’s picturesque Kings Park. For the latter two events, she will be joined by New Zealand’s Fat Freddy’s Drop.
The enigmatic seven piece soul act have won the world over with their hypnotic live performances which translate their impeccable records to a live setting in a similarly dynamic fashion to Badu’s razor sharp band. Their last album ‘Live At Roundhouse London’ showcased the incredible live show, which takes in highlights from their albums ‘Based On A True Story’ and ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’ and Australian audiences may be in for a taste of new material, which is hinted at a mid 2012 release.
Do not miss the captivating Erykah Badu as she tours across Australia for the first time in her own headline shows, joined by Fat Freddy’s Drop in Melbourne and Perth for some of the most musically exquisite engagements of the summer programme.
