After a string of unforgettable warehouse parties featuring the likes of Funkineven, Linkwood, Mark de Clive-LoweSteve Spacek and Raf Daddy, Lioness Presents is venturing inside, spending a winters night deep and warm within the surrounds of the Goodgod Danceteria.

Flying in to join us is Detroit native RECLOOSE (Rush Hour / Delusions of Grandeur / Planet E).

A mighty fine DJ with 15 years of international gigs and celebrated productions under his belt, Recloose sprang to fame via his soulful-future-funk releases on Carl Craig’s Planet E label. Following LP releases on both Peacefrog and Sonar Kollektiv he has since found a home at Rush Hour, unleashing a solid run of dancefloor 12’s spanning House, funk, disco and techno vibes. The past couple of months have seen Recloose heating up floors around the world, with his visit to Sydney rounding off a tour that has included Plastic People (LDN), Panoroma Bar (BLN) & Do Over (LA).

“Pure gold.” PITCHFORK

“Recloose is the grain of sand from the beach that is somehow still in your hair after you shower. It is music at its greatest, with a real focus on melody, measure, and mood.” URB

“(Recloose) lies at the intersection of several scenes bubbling up around electronic dance: moody techno; the half-programmed, half-live sound of broken beat; the computer-processed turntablism of Prefuse 73; even synth-heavy jazz from the late ’70s and early ’80s (later borrowed by Chicago househeads like Larry Heard).” ALL MUSIC

Also joining the party is original Lioness fam INKSWEL, a master of 80’s drum machine boogie and all that good future soul stuff. The Melbourne resident has a lovely set of records forthcoming. Labels like Firecracker, Dopeness Galore and Faces are all queuing up to get their hands on his p-funk synth joints. Mosca, Erol Alkan, Mr Beatnik and Ruf Dug have all found space in recent sets for some of his jams. If that’s not enough, he also finds time to run Hot Shot Sounds, a young vinyl only imprint showcasing the likes of Freekwency & Nite Class.

Lioness residents Edseven, Henry Compton and Fred Tectonic fill in the gaps, join the dots and generally play great old and new records to keep the vibe moving.

Music Documentary: How N.W.A’s ‘FUCK THE POLICE’ shut DOWN TRIPLE J (1990) | Hip Hop, Rap, Rock

Soul of Sydney Music Documentary:

Censorship and NWA’s Fuck the Police

triple j has always had a tradition of rejecting censorship. We refuse to edit the music and like to play it the way the artist intended.

Trawling back through triple j playlists is a good indication of what has been deemed offensive by the moral majority over the years.

Generally, if its offensive, we’ve played it.

Double J kicked off in 1975 playing a song that had never been played on radio before, the Skyhooks – ‘You Just Like Me ‘Cause I’m Good In Bed’.

In 1989 triple j was the only station in the world playing NWA‘s ‘Fuck Tha Police’. It bounced across the airwaves for 6 months before the police and politicians noticed and ABC management pulled it off the air.

Responding in a way that was true to the station, we played NWA’s track ‘Express Yourself‘ for 24hrs straight – 360 times in a row.

Tim: One of the events that really set the station apart in my mind, and earned a lot of respect, was in the early 1990s when triple j played NWA’s “Express Yourself” on continuous loop for 24 hours in protest against a management decision to ban “Fuck tha police”, also by NWA. It’s always stuck out as an example of the media serving its purpose (and was damn funny at the time).

Hamish: My favorite moment was when NWA were banned, and as a protest you played, “Express Yourself” for 24 hours. I have told people all around the world about that and they always think it is the ultimate freedom of speach protest remark, especially concidering it was from a government station.

Klare: My favourite triple j moment would have to be when you played NWA’s ‘Express Yourself’ straight for 24hrs as a protest to censorship and not being allowed to play ‘f**k the police’. I think it was around 1989? I thought it showed true Integrity and support for the DJs.

An early pioneer of the disco mix, John Morales was involved in some of the genre’s most important records.

John Morales was born in the Bronx, New York. He is recognized worldwide as one of the early pioneers of the disco mix. Having begun his career in 1975 as a local DJ in the Bronx, he also spun records for the US Armed Forces before he settled into the groove of his true calling. Realising he wanted some of the three or four minute-long records to last longer, he started splicing tape with his TEAC and in doing so, arguably invented the ‘extended edit’. After sending some of his mixes to acetate for other DJs, he was soon in demand on an official capacity and ended up being involved in the mix of some of disco’s most important records – big and small.

In 1975 while working as a DJ in local Bronx club, John Morales realised that he wanted to lengthen the duration of some of his records. Back then the duration of most records was 3 to 4 minutes, so by using his TEAC 71/2 and a box of razor blades, John started splicing tape for endless hours and became one the first DJ’s to create the ‘extended mix’ (or ‘remix’ in it’s original form). In doing so, he realised that he could achieve a similar outcome by cutting, slicing and taping parts from different recordings. This formed the basis for his acclaimed (deadly) medleys. John says “I can still see the 100′s of edits zoom by every-time I play the tape”. John Morales started to release some of his reel to reel edits, medleys and remixes to Acetate via the Sunshine Sound (a NYC studio where DJ’s could bring their reel to reel tapes and have acetate copies cut one at a time), so that he could play these tracks at clubs. Greg Carmichael gave him his first mixing job after hearing some of his Sunshine Acetate mixes and these first two official mixes made him famous: ‘Dance and Shake Your Tambourine‘ by ‘The Universal Robot Band‘ and the classic ‘I’m Caught Up” by Inner Life. However some of his early mixes and edits, even those officially released, were and remain uncredited and so might not appear in his discography! John has worked for numerous acts and has been involved in the creation of over 500 songs – both on his own and as part of John Morales & Sergio Munzibai (M & M Productions). John Morales can lay claim to being one of the most important figures in the creation of the extended mix, remix and re-edit concept.

Please Note: Our last 4 parties have completely sold out so be sure to lock in a spot on the dancefloor early for this special show.
