#GenerationNuSoul is proud to present The Rebirth Of Fresh, an exploration through iconic music. The Rebirth Of Fresh is a new fortnightly event held at Ginger’s in Darlinghurst that sees Sydney’s freshest musicians and vocalists tap into their creative expression and push sonic boundaries as they interpret an iconic producer’s body of work. With a new producer to deconstruct each month, a different guest vocalist each week and alternating between two house bands, The Rebirth Of Fresh will take the audience on a unique trip each fortnight.

In October we launched The Rebirth Of Fresh with flare by paying tribute to and reinterpreting Stevie Wonder’s ‘Songs In the Key Of Life’ double album with featured vocalists Wallace Gollan and Jeremy Gregory. November will see Tully Ryan (drums), Joel Jenkins (keys) and Eric Fortaleza (bass) putting their nu soul and jazz spin on the work of prolific R&B and pop producer Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds.

Babyface is a 10-time Grammy winner with 11 solo albums of his own. Throughout the 90s it was close to impossible to have not heard a Babyface composition, with his impeccably crafted explorations of love, romance and relationships making an imprint on the evolution of contemporary pop music throughout the world. To put it in perspective, Babyface has been behind over 125 Top-10 R&B and Pop hits, 42 #1’s R&B hits, and 51 Top-10 Pop hits (including 16 #1’s), and worked with the who’s who of the music world including Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, Bobby Brown, Madonna, Mariah Carey, TLC and Toni Braxton.

After a phenomenal show on November 7th with Ron E Jones, the Rebirtjh Of Fresh is back on FRIDAY NOVEMBER 21ST with guest vocalist Glenn Lumanta!

The Rebirth Of Fresh: Reinterpreting the work of Babyface will be a night paying tribute to an icon of 90s R&B and pop by adding a heavy dose of contemporary to the mix. Think Babyface meets Robert Glasper, as the band take the audience on a aural exploration that will leave the audience yearning for more. With an entry price that’s little more than that of a cup of coffee, Sydney’s music lovers will be ensured a night of genre-defying music that delivers more of a buzz than their morning caffeine hit.

About Say Whut?!
After surviving a collision with a tanker truck filled with milk and toxic waste (it was a special truck) when he was just a boy, DJ SayWhut?! was in a coma for 4 years where he dreamt of nothing but cheeseburgers. When he awoke he found that he had the ability to hear lower end frequencies very clearly and could foresee what the next song was going to be chosen (in shuffle mode) on a person’s iPod from 100 yards away. The iPod was then invented 15 years later. This brought on a revelation that he should play music in some form or another. When making fart noises with his armpits wasn’t enough he decided to pick up the headphones and become a DJ.
Cutting his teeth as a breakbeat DJ in Sydney in 2004, DJ SayWhut?! has always been known to play some of the funkiest basslines in breaks – keeping it hard and bouncy yet keeping the people dancing on the floor. With residencies at Broke’n’beats @ Kink and Chinese Laundry, SayWhut?! has played to a wide variety of crowds knocking them senseless to the floor with his barrage of bassline melodies and quick mixing ability. After the breakbeat phenomenon went out of fashion, SayWhut?! looked towards more organic sounds and started playing funk, soul, disco, boogie, hip hop and R&B still staying true to that funky bassline mentality.

Catch DJ Say Whut?! playing some regular residencies around town Ravisis in Bondi, at our Soul of Sydney Block Parties & this weeks ‘History of Hip Hop’ special as part of Sydney Fringe Festival.

Raphael Saadiq

Raphael Saadiq

Raphael Saadiq could be best described as a contemporary neo- rhythm & blues all-round artist (singer, musician, record producer). He is apparently an ancestor of original or as we say today “old school”, rhythm & blues from the 60s & 70s who retains the legacy of that musical era and is living out his own legacy today.

Raphael Saadiq, American singer-songwriter.

Image via Wikipedia

Saadiq is probably best known for when he was in multiplantinum renowned 80s rhythm & blues group Tony! Toni! Toné! His solo work pretty much involved the release of three solo albums plus the production of songs of award-winning artists such as D’Angelo, TLC, Mary J Blige, John Legend and Joss Stone, just to name a few. He has also collaborated with renowned artists such as Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder and Q-Tip. Perhaps he is not what the media hungers for, but he is definitely worth the recognition of the amazing work he has done. I love him!

Check out the video below for his song 100-Yard Dash, if you are a late-reaction-kind-of-person like me at times. I heard this song on Ellen. If this song doesn’t make you wanna get up and dance or at least head-bop, there’s something seriously wrong with you 😉

Bon apetito!
