SYDNEY HIP HOP: Chance Waters – Maybe Tomorrow Ft Lilian Blue

As of 7pm tonight, Chance Waters will be officially releasing his new single “Maybe Tomorrow”, check the unlisted YouTube link below to have a listen immediately!

Here is what Lewi McKirdy said about the song at Triple J;

“So jaunty and sweet! The charm of the song fully curtains the neg-out theme in the lyrics. I love that! Such a bright spin on a bunch of bad shit. Sunny dispositions fix a lot.”

Please contact me if you would like to be door listed for the Sydney show this Saturday night at the FBi Social.

Following the success of his first single ‘Infinity’, (currently sitting at over 20,000 views on YouTube), Chance has had his head down in the studio and this weekwill release his new track, ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ from his soon to be released album, ‘Infinity’.

Produced by One Above, (The Hilltops) the new single demonstrates Chance’s lyrical potency and his potential to push the typical boundaries of the hip-hop genre with an up-beat tempo, off-beat rhythm, piano-rock influences and live instrumentation.

Following widespread national acclaim under the appellation Phatchance, Sydney hip hop artist Chance Waters is losing the alias and going ‘au naturale’ with his given name. Chance is facing a ride on a wave of aftershock following his previous success that can only further shake up the Australian hip-hop scene, as we know it.

Chance’s debut album INKSTAIN saw the artist claim Featured Artist spots on triple j Unearthed and Music NSW as well as topping charts in AMRAP’s Most Ordered To Air Chart. After sparking a rave of support including The Australian Newspaper labeling him as “an intelligent lyricist and masterful storyteller”, Chance is well on his way to becoming a best-selling artist invigorating “a breath of fresh air” (Rave Mag).

Chance is undeniably cementing his place as a “burgeoning hip-hop star” (Dom Alessio, triple j) and carving the path for Australian hip-hop as he goes.

Jess Harlen – Park Yard Slang (2012 LP)

She’s toured worldwide with renowned Australian roots reggae band Blue King Brown (as their former backing singer) but this year Jess Harlen has decided to focus on her own music, cooking up some fresh new tracks.

Park Yard Slang is the second album by the Melbourne based artist which was released on March 30, 2012 through Obese Records. It is evident that there has been a significant shift of events in Harlen’s music since the release of Neon Heartache, 2011 LP (through Plethora Records).

Both albums were produced by renowned award-winning producer, Plutonic Lab. Therefore with the collaboration of two talented musicians bringing out a string of various skills – not to mention Harlen’s sweet and soothing voice, it was anticipated that we’d have sheer quality. And that’s what we got!

The opening and aptly titled track “Get Ready” is an appropriate introductory song to the album. With enticing vocals and the catchy beat it is already ample to draw the listener into further exploration of Park Yard Slang. Title track “Park Yard Slang” is a nice transition maintaining the slow tempo before “Weaving”. Here the tempo slightly builds up leading into jaunty, upbeat rock style track “Let You Down”, the first single released off the album. Reggae, dancehall influenced “Plantation” features Melbourne based reggae artist RuCL.

“Colliding” is a romanticised ‘feel good’ song that seems to depict the themes of patience and beauty. “Reach Home” is an emotive; melancholic yet encouraging and promising song about being courageous, facing present fears and of the past, insecurities and worries in order to overcome them. Harlen switches to the ukulele where the listener is gently lullabied with “Day Dreamer”, followed by another encouraging and humbling track, “Up To Me”.

Then follows “Beautiful Struggle” which illustrate life as full of love, pain, disappointment and change but also encourages the listener to accept it as inevitable as it is – a beautiful struggle. One is encouraged to take the responsibility of moving forward. Finally, one could say that “Silence” is another aptly titled track to top off the album.

Overall, Harlen maintains humility in her songwriting, which are personal reflections that people can relate to. It’s a courageous and great thing to see that there is more experimentation with the incorporation of different instruments and a variety of genres including soul, acoustic, reggae, dancehall and rock influences, producing something fresh and versatile to listen to. Harlen is definitely an artist to look out for this year!

Park Yard Slang is available on iTunes, JB Hi-Fi stores and other good music stores.

Review Score: 9 out of 10

Happy Australia Day kids, hope you enjoy this ALL Aussie funk mixup by local DJ, Radio presenter and crate digger Dj Kinetic…

Since stumbling across the ‘Respect Overdue’ compilation that Creative Vibes put out some years ago, I have been hot on the trail of rare and interesting funky music recorded in Australia, my own backyard. The following mix is a testament to my love of local flavors, and a bit of a poke at people who don’t think Aussies can be funky. This mix includes some of my favorites, some of my discoveries, and a couple of very, very rare numbers. I wanted to make it seamless, but time was a factor in putting this together. Still, for the most part I’ve managed to get tracks to blend into each other. Let me know what you thought! –

The Bamboos 4 Album Launch

Supported by Ray Mann Three

Friday 7 @ Manning Bar

Starting the new year off with a bang including performances at Falls Festival, Days Like This!,Womadelaide and headlining St Kilda Festival, Australian Funk & Soul royalty The Bamboos are hitting the road again to celebrate the launch of their fourth studio album – aptly titled ‘4’.

Released on U.K’s prestigious Tru Thoughts’ imprint, ‘4’ is one of the most exciting, original, vibrant and downright addictive albums of the coming year, and could easily see The Bamboos catapulted beyond the confines of a niche genre to permeate the international mainstream musical consciousness…The Bamboos have arrived!

There comes a time in every band when their sound crystallises, and with ‘4’ The Bamboos make a succinct musical statement that distills all their influences, nuances and idiosyncrasies and pushes them into a sonic world all their own.

One of the hottest bands to come out of Melbourne, The Bamboos were included in The Age’s prestigious ‘Top 100’ list of influential people in Melbourne for 2008, as well as reaching number four in their ‘Australia’s best band poll’ Just behind ACDC in 2009. Their last album ‘Side-Stepper’ reached the Number One position on the Australian iTunes R&B/Soul Chart. Their music has been featured in Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty and in the million-selling Nintendo Wii game de Blob.

The Bamboos have been making waves all over the world with their razor sharp live sets, resulting in several tours of Europe, U.K and throughout Australia.  The Bamboos have played the likes of Byron Bay Bluesfest, Parklife, Meredith Music Festival, Golden Plains, Sydney Festival and Tropfest.

With lead singles ‘On The Sly’ & ‘You Ain’t No Good’ already receiving rotation on Triple J, ‘4’ will be hitting stores March 22. The Bamboos head to Europe and U.K for a month-long tour in June.

What they said about The Bamboos

“No doubt in my mind this is the best thing they’ve done! There’s a big challenge facing a lot of Funk bands this year, and that is having explored most avenues of the late 60’s sound where do they go from there? This album in a lot of ways shows them the way to go” CRAIG CHARLES ‘THE FUNK & SOUL SHOW’ BBC6 (U.K)

“The new Bamboos is Huge!” – LAURENT GARNIER (FRANCE)

“Beautiful examples of killer modern Funk.” – ASHLEY BEEDLE (U.K)
