The Impellers are a 10 piece powerhouse, bringing pounding instrumental tracks, lyrically strong vocal tracks and, new for the 2nd album, a sweet, sweet ballad. New recordings, scheduled for release in early 2012 on the powerhouse labels that are Mocambo Records and Legere Recordings, bring together influences including soul, deep funk, latin and afrobeats, hip hop production, and includes funk re-versions of instantly recognisable tracks by Kaiser Chiefs and The Ting Tings.

The Impellers first full album ‘Robot Legs’ was released on UK independent label Freestyle Records. Since its release in 2009, the band have been busy touring across the UK, Netherlands, Spain, France and elsewhere. They have shared stages with some of the finest funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz and scratch DJ talent from around the world. Their ever-expanding CV includes shows with Marva Whitney, Breakestra, James Taylor Quartet, The Bamboos, Lack of Afro, Kid Koala, Hexstatic, Mr Thing (The Scratch Perverts),
DJ Bizznizz (UK DMC Championships winner),
DJ Vadim, Speedometer, Polar Bear,
Part Time Heroes and The Nextmen. The band also played live sessions on the BBC in the UK and were recruited by renowned DJ and promoter Adrian Gibson to play a live mix of tracks from the seminal ‘Ultimate Breaks & Beats‘ records – 55 classic breaks in a killer hour-and-a-half live set!!

Fela Kuti: Music is The Weapon, Film Screening & Tribute Night (Oct 27)

The series will kick off with a night that is a distinctive compliment to the gift of Nigerian Activist, Political maverick & God-Father of Afro-Beat Fela Anikulapo Kuti. We will be screening the definitive documentary “Fela: Music Is the Weapon” as an introduction to Fela’s dogmatic ideas, political movement & immense contribution to African Music,

This will be followed by a special show by Sydney own Afro-Beat power-house collective The Liberators and closing the night will be Soul of Sydney DJ’s with a rare Afro-Beat, Afro-Funk tribute homage to the likes of Fela Kuti (of course), Tony Allen, Hugh Masekela, Antibalas, TV On The Radio, Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Kola Ogunkoya, Sonny Okosun, King Sunny Ade, Ray Lema & Manu Dibango just to name a few.

Tickets are a kick ass $10 at the door for a film, funk gig and an awesome line up of djs.

Phat Kat …

Phat Kat has been presenting on Eastside Radio since October 2009. Sharing ancient ideologies and ethos with her fellow merchants, her collection includes blues, old school rock and roll, world and soul/funk. She is an avid supporter of community radio with subscriber status held at fellow stations 2SER, FBi and marketing/sponsorship is her specialty at Eastside. Using the senses and her guiding muses, she keenly twirls her way through flamenco dance, Italian language and Greek cuisine.

Bully Dux …

Bully Dux is a local deejay. He welcomes playing random weddings, Bar Mitzfahs, Sunday breakfast slots at the local cafe and sweaty warehouses parties. He cringes at corporate gigs but plays them anyway. Being dearly attached to his 2 wheelers, Bully Dux is keen to pull out his traveling paintbrushes and paint more colour on empty objects.

He’s hosted and played on 2SER – Mophonics show and random blues and roots slot on Bondi FM.

DJ FRENZIE
Frenzie cut his teeth DJ’ing in Melbourne in the late 80’s, having grown up being inspired by the early cut and paste sounds of hip hop music. In the mid 90s he spent 5 years in Brisbane, and in that time managed to DJ regularly at pretty much every decent venue around town. Now days, Frenzie has settled down in Sydney, where once again he has played at every decent inner city venue at one time or another. In 2001, he secured a management position at Sydney’s most beloved club – The Globe, managing some of Sydney’s most beloved clubnight.

Frenzie has played at all major music festivals, featured on the 2001 Triple J ‘Turn Up Your Radio‘ tour with Endorphin and Groove Terminator, and has 15 years experience presenting programs on community radio around Australia.
