The West Coast Icons Tour

The resurgence of West Coast hip hop in recent times has seen a new breed of artists enjoying critical acclaim and commercial success. The current poster boy of that success, Kendrick Lamar, seeks to return to the roots of the West Coast sound on his next album and says that he wants to, “bring that original sound that people have been missing from the West Coast for a while.”

To do so, he wants to work with legendary Compton rapper and producer, DJ Quik who will forever be identified with the West Coast for creating an instantly recognisable sound that fuses funk, r&b, soul and everything in between. Such is Quik’s influence, LA Weekly has recently qualified him (August 2013) as the Number 1 West Coast producer in the history of hip hop ahead of Dr Dre, DJ Muggs and The Alchemist.

With eight albums to his name and production work with a who’s who of the R&B and Hip Hop world including 2Pac, Toni Tony Tone, Nate Dogg, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to his credit, DJ Quik stands as one of hip-hop’s most consistent artists, producers and musicians. To his credit he has over 100 million sound scanned recordings and has remained as a main stay in hip hop and R&B circles for over two decades.

He continued to mix his legendary beat crafting and witty lyricism with his 2012 release, The Book of David, an album that, gave listeners an insightful and candid peek into the man behind the music.

As one of Quik’s long time collaborators (they released the acclaimed album “Blaqkout” together in 2009), Kurupt, is also one of the most recognisable and important figures in West Coast hip hop history. An integral part of the Death Row Records family, Kurupt (aka Young Gotti) is known as one half of Tha Dogg Pound with Daz Dilinger who, as a duo, has released 7 studio albums since 1995 with an impeding release, “Alumni” scheduled for late 2013. As a Grammy nominated solo artist, Kurupt has released 6 studio albums and enjoyed a stream of commercial hits and collaborations with everyone from The Gap Band, Gangstarr, Jodeci, Dr Dre, Tyrese, Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne, not to mention a filmography that has seen him appear in over 25 films.

Constant touring by both Quik and Kurupt have seen them remain at the forefront of live hip hop. Their chemistry on “Blaqkout” was evident and the duo are said to be currently working on a new “Blaqkout” release.

In what is set to please not only hip hop fans, but music fans in general, DJ Quik and Kurupt now come to Australia for the first time together as part of the inaugural “West Coast Icons Tour”, a fitting name for two of the West Coast’s most recognisable, and important, figures.

With hours of hits amongst them, and together, and a dynamic energetic live show full of West Coast bravado, this show will be reflective of the legacy of two illustrious careers and one of the hip hop shows of the year.

TOUR: Fashawn + Exile Sydney Show in June 21 @ CIVIC UNDERGROUND

Inline image 1Grindin’ & Acclaim Magazine Presents

Fashawn & Exile

Thursday 21st June

Civic Underground – Sydney

Live and direct from California: critically acclaimed MC Fashawn and super producer Exile.

After initially working on Fashawn’s classic debut “Boy Meets World” in 2009 they now tour Australia together for the first time.

FASHAWN

What did you do the year you turned 21? Hip-hop prodigy Fashawn earned a spot on the cover of XXL magazine, toured the world and built a rep as one of rap’s new rising stars.

Fashawn’s debut album, “Boys Meets World” was heralded by critics and fans alike as one of the best albums of 2009 for its gritty, street-wise and intelligent rhymes. Some even compared his introductory opus to Nas’ brilliant “Illmatic.” It was enough for XXL to name Fashawn to its list of hip-hop’s best freshman.

In 2010 he toured throughout America with Wiz Khalifa, then followed that up with a Talib Kweli tour. Fashawn is also no stranger to the International Hip Hop scene touring with Dilated Peoples in 2009 and most recently Rakim in 2011.From coast to coast, and from continent to continent, everyone agreed – they weren’t seeing some fly-by-night novelty act, they were seeing one of hip-hop’s freshest new voices.

Many took notice: He worked with Grammy-winning producers Dr. Dre, DJ Khalil and Alchemist, featured on songs with J. Cole, Aloe Blacc and a handful of tomorrow’s future stars. Skateboardapparel company Etnies and urban clothing line Orisue both turned to him for endorsements. Camp Woodward, the biggest extreme sports camp in the world, recruited him to create a song/TV commercial and his hometown Fresno Grizzlies (AAA baseball) have made custom Fashawn merchandise to sell at their events. So that’s legendary hip-hop producers, international clothing lines and a pro sports franchise all wanting to be part of Team Fashawn.

With a strong hip-hop pedigree (think Rakim’s merciless rhymes plus 2pac’s outlaw spirit plus Nas’ effortless flow) and a loyal fan base of young listeners, Fashawn seems poised for the long haul.

◘ ◘ The Magic of DJ Quik ◘ ◘

When rap music first emerged in the mid 1970s, it connected with listeners immediately by addressing all aspects of urban life with its unique freedom of self-expression. As the music evolved into a global cultural force, at least one rap icon remains true to the music’s heritage. That man is DJ Quik. MC, Producer, DJ, Multi Instrumentalist and West Coast hip hop legend. In fact, together with Dr Dre, Quik defined the sound that will forever be identified with the West Coast.

With four gold and platinum albums and production work with a who’s who of the R&B and Hip Hop world including 2Pac, Toni Tony Tone, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to his credit, DJ Quik stands as one of hip-hop’s most consistent artists and musicians. To his credit he has over 100 million soundscanned recordings!

Six years after his last solo studio release, Quik is back. The Compton, California native returns with his eighth solo studio album with The Book Of David. As a nod to his birth-name, David Blake, this latest release is a candid and insightful project and has been voted the second most underrated album of 2011 on Rap Radar.

Quik’s sound is instantly recognizable and has been a mainstay in R&B and Hip Hop circles for almost two decades. In 2012, he continues to mix his legendary beat crafting and witty lyricism and with this new album he has evolved as a recording artist and the mind of the man behind the music, David Blake.

Given that his skills are just as precise now as they were on his 1991 debut album “Quik is the Name”, Quik’s music remains relevant and essential. The Book Of David is yet another fine addition to the catalogue of an immensely gifted artist.

20 years into the rap game, Quik will be performing live in Australia, for the first time, in March 2012. His live shows are reflective of not only the legacy that spans his illustrious career but his future legacy which will cement him as one of the most important players in the history of hip hop.

R.I.P Nate Dogg – You have passed but your amazing musical legacy will be with us for ever!

Details are scant at the moment but Nathaniel D. Hale better known as G Funk flag bearer Nate Dogg died yesterday, his family has announced. Though the cause of death is currently unknown, Hale had suffered two strokes in 2007 and 2008.

In an interview conducted late last year, fellow 213 member Warren G expressed concern over Hale’s health: “Everybody’s just gotta keep him in their prayers, because he had two strokes and that’s real dangerous,” he said. “A lot of people don’t come back from that. Luther Vandross did it, so hopefully Nate can do it. The game needs him. I need him.”

He was 41 years of age. R.I.P. Nate Dogg.
