Soul of Sydney Block Party is officially turning two & we want to throw down and celebrate with our extended soul family & friends who have blessed us with their presence, and made the last two years a so unforgettable.

We are honored to be hosting our 2nd birthday jam featuring a main musical inspiration for us as DJ’s & music fans & party organizers. We are blessed to present legendary record collector, DJ & Disco/Funk edit & remixing don, DJ Kon (of world famous crate digging duo Kon & Amir)

Kon comes armed with a stack of Soul, Funk, Disco, Hip Hop heat, known around the world for keeping it fresh with the hottest edits, remixes & musical knowledge for days. We can honestly say we cant wait to get him on to throw down the goods at our 2nd birthday.

Sending some mad love to the DJ’s, Dancers & Extended Soul-family who have shared the dance-floors, turntables & picnic blankets with us over the last two years, you guys really are the ‘Soul of Sydney’ & you have made the last few years so memorable for us. We are so blessed to have you all at our jams, and in our lives. Thank you all for the support. we hope we can see you all down there at our 2nd birthday.

“Those BBE records were just phenomenal. I think (he was) very much ahead of the curve when it comes to just digging that much deeper and ever since all those came out, there’s been a whole heap of new generation compilations – very next level stuff. Where the hell can you get all that music from?! Proper diggers!” – Gilles Peterson

There are only a handful of DJ’s worldwide with a reputation widely acknowledged as being one of the best. Known amongst his peers as the best disco DJ, a detailed crate digger, and an innovative producer with direct access to master tapes only a rare breed of producer’s are able to access, KON remains one of the most respected producer’s responsible for the re-emergence of disco with his innovative re-edits of soul, funk and disco classics. His re-edits have propelled him as one of the most sought after producers across the globe, cementing his authority in the music industry.

Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Kon has built his career spanning over 20 years centred on his first love of crate digging. One half of critically acclaimed Kon & Amir (BBE), whereby together, they introduced rare grooves to a wider audience, Kon’s solo efforts began years prior to the union of Kon & Amir. Crate digging from 1976, DJing from 1985, progressing on to rocking club floors from 1991 till present, his love affair with vinyl and expertise is often called upon by many heavy weights from Kanye West, and Dr. Dre to name but a couple.

Kon’s DJing ability traverses many genres, professing the element of versatility as the key to a successful DJ, naming Spinna, Kenny Dope and Bobbito Garcia as successful DJ’s, due to their versatile sets.

With a new original album released on BBE called “On My Way” available now, the 11 track album features mostly unfamiliar vocalists such Amy Douglas, Georg Levin, with the exception of Ben Westbeech – a name synonymous within the current Soul community. Think sweeping strings, sporadic slap bass, and a multi-dimensional, floor thumping disco revival.

Sydney audiences will hear the rare selection masterminded by Kon as he plays a very special set at SOUL OF SYDNEY 2nd Birthday event on the 17th of November, 2013 – Venue is a secret oasis in the city! KON is a unique visionary, a remarkable DJ with the history of music at his fingertips. Prepare to throw down!

★Ticket, Venue Info, Mixtapes:

Created in November 2009, Soul of Sydney is an independent, artist run collective who are bonded by a love of ‘funk’ based music. Our people include DJ’s, Musicians, Producers, Dancers & Designers who have come together to promote and support the music we love in this city, and the street culture around it.

Soul of Sydney Block Party is our monthly Sunday musical afternoon (12-9pm) feast. Focused on a family orientated get together, DJ’s, Record Collectors, B-boys & B-Girls, and musicians come down to share & enjoy some of the music they love in a completely different environment, outside of bars or clubs.
We have an ‘open decks, open mic & open dance floor’ policy just to keep it personal and give everyone a chance to do their thing where locals can come down as our guests outside of a usual club set.

Music styles generally sit at a safe middle ground of Soul, Funk, Disco and a fair bit of Jazz & golden era hip hop stuff too with artists James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, De La Soul, J Dilla, Stevie Wonder, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Larry Levan amongst the playlist.

AUDO – FUNK, SOUL, HIP HOP: PITCH & SCRATCH – Together (Legere Recordings)

Pitch & Scratch new LP “Together”

Pitch & Scratch take the next step and introduce vocalists and lyricists who share a similar, funky and peaceful vision to the family? This is where Wayne Martin comes in. Born in New Orleans and now living in Europe, this respected blues singer came up with the very personal, moving “Papa Never Was A Genius”, which Mzuzu and Suro turned into an uplifting latin-soul groover. Speaking of uplifting spirits: With the voice of Brazilian singer Leila Pantel “Maculele” and “Vem Meu Bem” give the album a energetic summer vibe. Seanie T., the rapper from South East London is talking serious business. “Pitch Me And Scratch Me” is a piece of true, down to earth and gritty UK hiphop. Plus there can only be one Alex Prince, well-known in the German urban scene, to top this funky line-up of vocalists. “Funk Is Ruling in My Head” has the message in the title and is taking Alex Prince back to the roots of funk. We are going to release this as the first single.

But what would the funk be without the horns and the percussion. “Together” is a big shout-out to the power of brass. Here we have the Diazpora Horns, the Boxhorns (of Jan Delay & Disko No.1) and Pitch & Scratch’s homies of the Superbad Horns. Put this in line with the super tight percussion of Lack of Afro in “Papa Never Was A Genius” and we have something really special going on.

Towards the end of the album Pitch & Scratch join the “Road To Saturn” while they “Roll’n Rock”. Here we have it all “Together”: Deep, serious clubby vibes, from the people for the people, no posing just the groove next to the adrenalin of a sweating Northern Soul dancefloor packed with a crowd which is completely in it for the music. That’s what we call “Together”!

With more than 1000 DJ-sets on the agenda since his introduction to the scene in 1999 Mzuzu from Hamburg/Germany is one of the hardest working faces in the business, simply becaus he does not only DJ but is a crafted multi-instrumentalist as well as a studied music scientist. Starting with cello, he moved on to the guitar and the bass and founded Superbad! In 2004. The band supported legends like Lyn Collins and Blowfly, at the same time he perfected his composition and musician skills and recorded with local artists, from independent to big names like Hamburg legend Carsten Bohn, with whom he played in the Urban Session/Organic Band, Samy Deluxe, Jan Delay
and Udo Lindenberg. In 2009 he introduced his new band K & The Offbeats and released the album „Hamburg Hustle“ as the producer and arranger in Pitch & Scratch.

DJ Suro

As the man behind the decks and mastermind of the beats DJ Suro from Hamburg/Germany is a well-respected face in the German HipHop scene. He is not only a resident at Fusion, certainly one of the most advanced festivals in Germany, but regularly plays parties like Trust In Wax, Beat Me Up or Soulfood all aorund Germany. Suro played with nearly everybody from Jan Delay to Talib Kweil and Marva Whitney, from Dilated Peoples to Grandmaster Flash and Biz Markie. He has been invited to host DJ-workshops in Germany and Senegal, played in cutting-edge, indpendent local film productions and is a regular guest in the German funk live scene with Superbad! and Brixton Boogie. As a producer and arranger in Pitch & Scratch he released „Hamburg Hustle“ in 2009.
