Future Classic has managed to top what has already been an amazing year by being acknowledged by music industry peers as Independent Label of the Year, alongside a host of top accolades for label artist Flume, at last night’s prestigious Australian Independent Record Label Association (AIR) awards ceremony in Melbourne.
Indie-dance duo Jagwar Ma and ‘electronic Wunderkind’ Flume led the way for nominated artists, contributing an unprecedented ten out of a total fourteen nominations for the label across all categories. Flume truly made his mark on the evening by taking out a total of four awards for the Best Dance / Electronica Single & Album, Best Independent Album and the Independent Artist of the Year award.
For a label that started out as a passion project for Future Classic founder Nathan McLay and its first employee (now partner) Chad Gillard, the success is testament to the hard work of the artists, the staff and extended Future Classic family across Australia and the world. In response McLay commented;
“It’s humbling to have the industry support, we really appreciate it! But it comes down to the brilliant music being created by our artists. We get an immense buzz out of being part of the process and assisting them in their careers. It’s a great time for independent artists and new breed music companies such as ours that have been able to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape, and AIR plays a vital role in supporting us to collectively prosper.”
Approaching the tenth anniversary of the label, Future Classic now boasts an enviable list of recording artists including Flight Facilities, Jagwar Ma, Seekae, Panama, Touch Sensitive and Flume to name a few, with the label’s services having grown to include management, touring and brand partnerships.
With a tenth birthday party to plan for, a series of high profile releases and some very exciting signings not yet announced, the hard work is set to continue into 2014 and way beyond for the humble Sydney label.
