From the early 90s, Sydney Hip Hop heads had a beacon on 2SER 107.3 FM: The Mothership Connection, hosted by Miguel D’Souza. This weekly community radio show opened its studio doors to MCs, DJs, writers, and breakers, giving the city’s crews a place to connect, represent, and share their work — a true cultural hub bound by a love for pure hip hop scene.

For me and my mates in the area, it was a ritual: racing home from school in inner-city Waterloo to catch the back end of the show, our weekly source of hip hop we couldn’t hear anywhere else. The program guided, connected, the underground, giving space and respect to elements of the culture that were rarely recognized elsewhere. Years later, we became DJs ourselves, and to this day we still spin many of the cuts we first heard on The Mothership Connection.
By the time the show wrapped up, it had given countless artists their first taste of the airwaves. For anyone who grew up chasing that frequency, The Mothership Connection wasn’t just a radio show — it was a weekly pilgrimage to the heart of Sydney hip hop, and for me and my friend, it laid the foundation for a lifelong love of the music.

Today, recordings and memories of the show are time capsules of Sydney hip hop’s early years — raw, creative, passionate, and defiantly DIY. We’re thankful to have witnessed some of this as youth, because without platforms like The Mothership Connection, the culture we love wouldn’t be what it is today. Thankfully, some of those broadcasts survive, courtesy of the incredible folks at Hip Hop Radio Archive, here is a couple we have been enjoying all over again.
