RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY HOSTS ALL NEW STAGE AT BARCELONA’S SÓNAR FESTIVAL

Hot on the heels of its 15th edition in NYC, the Red Bull Music Academy is heading straight to Barcelona to host its own lineup of artists at the globally renowned Sónar Festival for the ninth consecutive year, from June 13 through June 15. An all-star cast of Academy alumni and affiliates can be found on the expanded SonarDôme stage in its new home at Fira Montjuïc that was chosen for the festival’s 20th anniversary. The stage has found a special place in the hearts of Sónar-goers for its revved-up revelling at sundown as much as its adventurous, left-of-centre programming.

JJ Doom is the official moniker for a musical partnership that’s been in the making for some time and the latest addition to the SonarDôme lineup: hip-hop’s most enigmatic character and global underground hero, DOOM, united with eclectic producer and 2003 Academy alumnus Jneiro Jarel. The three-day program will also see the long-awaited reunion of disco/boogie renovators Metro Area and the speaker-rumbling madness of Branko from Buraka Som Sistema. Also expect performances from distinguished Academy alumni like Oddisee (US), Palmbomen (NE), Krystal Klear (UK), Baris K (TR), Elektro Guzzi (AT), and a collaborative live set from JESSE (Finland’s heavy synth duo, which includes Academy alumnus Ilari Larjosto) and Jimi Tenor. Festival attendees will likewise experience the sci-fi inspired electro-doink partnership of Felix Kubin and James Pants and the justly hyped technicolour beats of Hudson Mohawke and Lunice as TNGHT.

For those who can’t make the trip to Spain this year, all the SonarDôme action will be streamed live on RBMA Radio daily from 3:00 pm CET to 10:00 pm CET. Some downtime during the three-day Sónar by Day marathon will be offered daily at SonarCinema where the Red Bull Music Academy will screen its latest documentary H∆SHTAG$, a six-part web series shedding light on the most fascinating musical movements emerging from the web in recent times, featuring How To Dress Well, SpaceGhostPurrp, Flying Lotus, Mount Kimbie, AlunaGeorge, Shlohmo, TNGHT, Miguel and many more.

Sónar is renowned for its enticing exploration of exciting new music, media and art, and its philosophy of curating a diverse lineup from around the world dovetails perfectly with the Red Bull Music Academy ethos. The Academy has been bringing up-and-coming musicians together with those who paved the way for 15 years now, touching down for a groundbreaking five-week event in a new metropolis each year.
