Since the Fela Kuti “Music Is The Weapon” tribute is on this week we though it’s about time to let you know about just some of Fela Kuti influences and inspired music in more recent production.
New York based production duo Masters at Work (Louie Vega & Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez) were greatly encouraged by the Afro sounds and message of Fela’s music that they had intended to collaborate with him on upcoming production in the late 1990’s, however their hopes were dashed when Fela passed away in August 1997. As an alternative, the duo re-worked Fela’s signature “Expensive Shit” (1975) in a modern refined Afro-House cut while upholding its dedicated tribal flavours. The song borrows heavily from the Afro-Beat rhythms of Expensive Shit (1975) and also lyrically from Upside Down (1975).
Its Afro-beat alright, just a little more refined and DJ friendly.
