Introduction:
Medium: Vinyl is an annual event at Hardware Gallery which sees artists using vinyl records as the basis for their artwork. Besides a celebration of the vinyl record, it is a fun and vibrant exhibition that pushes artists slightly away from their normal practice, sometime simply by working with a round starting point. Each year we see increasingly adventurous ideas, experiments and artworks, which is why it is one of our most popular shows of the year, meaning record crowds, large numbers of sales and great media exposure. Coverage in 2010 ranged from Radio to Print to Internet and TV. Heres a bit of what they said:

Medium: Vinyl Exhibition – 180 artworks on vinyl records.
Local, international, youth. emerging and established artists directly interact with the medium and theme, creating unique and innovative art. As the medium is a modern icon, an antique and a collectable, an object to be recycled and a piece of art itself there are many considerations for the artist to respond to, visually and symbolically.
Artist from previous exhibitions commented on how this exhibition challenges and extends their artmaking to be more creative, from different shapes as a canvas and qualities as a sculptural medium to its relevance culturally.

Opening night
Opening night is Friday 20th May from 6-9pm. Music by Dean Dixon and Dave Fernandes – HAHA Industries.
Medium Vinyl Opening Night – a vast array of artworks in all sorts of mediums combined with Vinyl – objects created, sculptural pieces and records used as canvas on mass with a broad range of artistic styles.
Some themes explored have been the relation of the specific music featured on the artists record, in portraits, street art representation and collage responses. Other works feature the exploration of the medium with a sense of time and existence, relating to the 4th dimension with casting, manipulation and erosion to create fascinating works.
Also the night has some of the best vinyl pushers cranking the decks….so be ready to meet and greet and move your feet…
Deadline for artworks is Thursday 21st April
Opening night is Friday 20th May from 6-9pm.

Last year, Medium: Vinyl 2010 attracted 150 artworks by 140 artists from Overseas, around Australia and from Sydney.
In 2011 there will be 6 separate categories with 30 places in each category. Entry fee is AU$30 (inclusive of GST) per piece of artwork (up to 3 artworks can be submitted per artist). Entry is on a strictly first come first served basis.Categories

1. Painting/Drawing: Use your vinyl as a round canvas
2. Print/Stencil: Any work that incorporates an element of printmaking or stencilling
3. 3D/Collage/Sculpture: Use your vinyl as a base or add something to it
4. Photography: As part of the Head On Photographic Festival
5. Musical/Conceptual: Any medium but incorporates the concept of music
6. Youth (under 18s): Discount entry fee of $15 applies
