Over the past few years, DC has been churning out a collective of inspiring MC’s and producer’s who are united in mind, spirit, sound and message. They’re less about samples and more about emulating original Go-Go sounds using real live instrumentation, with witty and insightful lyrics that reflect their own personal headspace and environment. Oddisee hails from this sound and is a part of this emerging wealth of creativity. Born in Washington D.C to a African American mother and a Sudanese father, creative pursuits and politics surrounded him from a young age through the family lineage of poets, musicians, and artists. He was taught to think, question and do as evidenced in the range of topics Oddisee discusses in his rhymes.

Being familiar with his music as a producer and MC, there was very little I knew about his personal insights into music, the world or his opinions about politics and humanity. If you are familiar with his lyrics, you would understand where the curiosity emanates from. The more interviews I had read from various e-zine publications, online blogs and various youtube clips, the more I discovered a free spirit, intelligent, insightful man who is not afraid of dissecting real issues.

For the first time, Sydney will experience this sound and energy as he steps foot at the Civic Hotel, Pitt Street Thursday the 1st of March, 2012 featuring some of Sydney’s finest producers performing under one roof:

KATALYST – Playing an exclusive DJ set to preview the “Quakers” a joint project with Geoff Barrow from Portishead which features 35 of Hip Hop’s dopest MC’s. The album will be out on the Stones Throw label in March.

M-PHAZES – One of the most in demand Hip Hop producers right now who has produced for the likes of Pharaohe Monch, Talib Kweli, Bliss n Eso, Kimbra and many more. With 2 Aria Awards already under his belt, his new project “Phazed Out” is scheduled for release later this month.

This hip hop event will be something truly unique as Grindin Music teams up with itsofficial.com.au to proudly present their first Sydney invitational producer beat battle largely unknown by the hip hop community. Final contestants have been announced to showcase their production for the judges (M-phazes and DJ Flagrant) to determine on the night:
