Jess Harlen – Park Yard Slang (2012 LP)

She’s toured worldwide with renowned Australian roots reggae band Blue King Brown (as their former backing singer) but this year Jess Harlen has decided to focus on her own music, cooking up some fresh new tracks.

Park Yard Slang is the second album by the Melbourne based artist which was released on March 30, 2012 through Obese Records. It is evident that there has been a significant shift of events in Harlen’s music since the release of Neon Heartache, 2011 LP (through Plethora Records).

Both albums were produced by renowned award-winning producer, Plutonic Lab. Therefore with the collaboration of two talented musicians bringing out a string of various skills – not to mention Harlen’s sweet and soothing voice, it was anticipated that we’d have sheer quality. And that’s what we got!

The opening and aptly titled track “Get Ready” is an appropriate introductory song to the album. With enticing vocals and the catchy beat it is already ample to draw the listener into further exploration of Park Yard Slang. Title track “Park Yard Slang” is a nice transition maintaining the slow tempo before “Weaving”. Here the tempo slightly builds up leading into jaunty, upbeat rock style track “Let You Down”, the first single released off the album. Reggae, dancehall influenced “Plantation” features Melbourne based reggae artist RuCL.

“Colliding” is a romanticised ‘feel good’ song that seems to depict the themes of patience and beauty. “Reach Home” is an emotive; melancholic yet encouraging and promising song about being courageous, facing present fears and of the past, insecurities and worries in order to overcome them. Harlen switches to the ukulele where the listener is gently lullabied with “Day Dreamer”, followed by another encouraging and humbling track, “Up To Me”.

Then follows “Beautiful Struggle” which illustrate life as full of love, pain, disappointment and change but also encourages the listener to accept it as inevitable as it is – a beautiful struggle. One is encouraged to take the responsibility of moving forward. Finally, one could say that “Silence” is another aptly titled track to top off the album.

Overall, Harlen maintains humility in her songwriting, which are personal reflections that people can relate to. It’s a courageous and great thing to see that there is more experimentation with the incorporation of different instruments and a variety of genres including soul, acoustic, reggae, dancehall and rock influences, producing something fresh and versatile to listen to. Harlen is definitely an artist to look out for this year!

Park Yard Slang is available on iTunes, JB Hi-Fi stores and other good music stores.

Review Score: 9 out of 10

This came about due to the overwhelming disappointment with the closure of so many GREAT music venues in Sydney recently. So we felt the time was right to organise a local music communal get together for the locals who have been supporting the music and venues we all love.

We will have a Sound System, Decks & Mic set up, so if you are keen to help out with music or a mini show case, let us know via FB or e-mail.

GRAMMY® award winning artist Erykah Badu is touching down in Australia this summer in what is sure to be the hottest ticket of the season.

Forging her own path in soul music and almost single-handedly directing the genre since the ’97 debut Baduizm, Badu’s releases have always demanded critics attention, whilst her live shows incite rapturous engagement from audiences as she bursts through hits like On & On, Love Of My Life, Apple Tree, Tyrone, Bag Lady, Window Seat and more.

Her latest release New Amerykah Part II (Return Of The Ankh) further pushed the boundaries of contemporary soul music, enlisting the work of previous collaborators James Poyser and Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson (The Roots, Al Green) as well as cutting edge producers like Madlib, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Karriem Riggins (Diana Krall) and the late J Dilla.

Erykah Badu will perform live for the very first time in her own headline shows in Australia, offering fans their first taste to see her in concert in exquisite and historic venues such as Sydney Opera House, Melbourne’s Palais Theatre and Perth’s picturesque Kings Park. For the latter two events, she will be joined by New Zealand’s Fat Freddy’s Drop.

The enigmatic seven piece soul act have won the world over with their hypnotic live performances which translate their impeccable records to a live setting in a similarly dynamic fashion to Badu’s razor sharp band. Their last album ‘Live At Roundhouse London’ showcased the incredible live show, which takes in highlights from their albums ‘Based On A True Story’ and ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’ and Australian audiences may be in for a taste of new material, which is hinted at a mid 2012 release.

Do not miss the captivating Erykah Badu as she tours across Australia for the first time in her own headline shows, joined by Fat Freddy’s Drop in Melbourne and Perth for some of the most musically exquisite engagements of the summer programme.

About Electric Avenue

ELECTRIC AVENUE is a monthly get-down, where ears and feet are led astray by a soulfully quixotic blend of house, disco, hip-hop, neo-soul, techno and boogie bombs.

Between them, EA’s resident jocks Gian Arpino & Cameron Brown have been pushing these styles for 30 years and will be calling on only the finest local and international musical friends to help them continue spreading the gospel.

So, if you have a penchant for classic throwbacks mixed with future classics, and enjoy the tasty stylings of dancefloor doyens like Theo Parrish, Maurice Fulton, Mr Scruff, Idjut Boys, Unabombers, Larry Levan, Walter Gibbons, Greg Wilson, DJ Utern, Dam Funk, and David Mancuso, then Electric Avenue is the new Sydney address for you to set your night soul free!

ERYKAH BADU AUSTRALIAN TOUR PETITION!

ERYKAH BADU AUSTRALIAN TOUR PETITION

It’s time to make some noise for one of the pioneers of the Neo Soul movement – ERYKAH BADU! From the lady that brought us classics like “Didn’t Cha Know”, “Bag Lady”, “I Want You”, “Ye-Yo”, “On&On”, “Tyrone” and “Love of My Life (Hip Hop)”, Erykah Badu has made an indelible mark in the music industry not only as a creative genius, but as an original artist in a league of her own.  Badu seamlessly fuses organic sounds of  African rhythms, to Hip Hop, to Jazz, Soul to Funk. As a mother, singer/songwriter, producer and entertainer she can hypnotize an audience without the overbearing  trait of preaching a movement – she just lives it.

After rumours of having been denied to perform for Peats Ridge Festival 09/10, a petition has been created via Facebook to let major promoters know that there is a fanbase in Australia. The petition aims to make some waves in the industry with the desired outcome of a future Australian tour! Her new album NEW AMERYKAH Pt.II: Return of the Ankh will be released on the 25th of February, 2010 which sees her collaborate with multiple artists from Jay Electronica, 9th Wonder, Shafiq Husayn of SA RA, Madlib, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Lil Wayne and Bilal to name a few. Honorable mention goes to J DILLA for the use of his production  beyond the grave in the collaboration track entitled ‘LOVE’.

The Erykah Badu petition in essence is all about music – her music, and the heart of the petition is YOU – her fans. Music is our universal language. You know it. I know it. It’s that knowing smile we’ve all experienced. Sometimes we wish the world could take it’s time with us. But it doesn’t. Music is the only thing that can make us take control and say ‘world, you gotta wait…cos my jams on!’

It’s the tingles, the goosebumps, it’s the headnod, it’s the smile….it’s losing ourselves in the moment….it just is.

Music speaks, moves, inspires, instills faith, HEALS and encourages strength through boldness!!

LET’S BE BOLD!

Soul Symphony II: An Ode to Erykah Badu mixed by Kavi-R

Mixed simply for the love of Good Music and BADUIZM!

Excerpt from Kavi R’s website: This mix was crafted with love and respect for the artist. All songs are played at their original tempo. “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit”! Ditto! if you’re digging my mixes, positive feedback is warmly received. I’m extremely passionate about exploring and exposing uncommon underground quality music. I rarely hear this music on the radio, in the clubs or see it on tv. It’s up to us individuals to keep the Funk alive!

Why I mix the way I do…I’m an old school DJ that believes in utilizing every feature of the “1s & 2s”, “Wheels Of Steel”…Turntables! Mixing, remixing, scratching and juggling two copies are all part of the DJ / Hip Hop art form and culture that I grew up with.

And on a side note….

There’s an interesting buzz now here in Sydney with the Place of Public Entertainment law (PoPE) finally being abolished. Do yourself a favour and be aware just how much our city will awaken from its slumber in the next couple of months. Walking around town Sunday evening past several cafes and pubs along Broadway, I found more live music on street corners than I had seen in a long while. There was an air of vibrancy that seemed to lightly hang upon the stillness of our sleeping streets. I felt the city had held its tired breath and finally exhaled this thick air of  inspiration that seemed to linger, where all I could hear and see were smiling faces appreciative of being in the presence of live music again. It felt good! Why? Our musical culture is back!

This is what it’s all about – a culture! Sydney is changing and it’s changing for the better and it’s up to you – the person, to maintain this culture. In order to cultivate this live culture, we must be steadfast at supporting local artists and live bands, spreading the word by mouth, supporting your scene and supporting venues and promoters that make it all possible for our enjoyment.

A change soon come…..
