Major Zulu is a Sydney-based singer-songwriter whose journey has taken her from the heart of Zambia to the UK and the lively streets of Paris.
Her musical path began in the UK, where she gained recognition as a powerful vocalist. However, it was her time in Paris—spanning eight years and steeped in the city’s rich musical culture—that truly ignited her creativity. This international experience shaped her music into an expressive and dynamic blend that resonates with audiences worldwide.
With earthy vocals, timeless songs, and masterful storytelling, Major Zulu’s performances are emotional journeys. Her music can make you laugh, cry, or lose yourself in the moment. One moment, she transports you to Paris’ vibrant jazz scene at “Aux Trois Mailletz”; the next, you’re immersed in Zambia’s history, experiencing her father’s childhood under colonial rule and his activism for democracy. This seamless blending of personal and historical narratives creates a deeply immersive and thought-provoking experience.
Major Zulu has captivated audiences at sold-out events, including the Sydney International Jazz Festival, Jazz in the Vineyards, and the Art Gallery of NSW. She has shared the stage with legends such as Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, Paolo Nutini, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Her critically acclaimed EP, The DIY Project Called Life, was released in 2021 and recorded in Sydney. Currently, she’s finalizing her new self-titled EP, I Am Major Zulu, supported by Create NSW. These fresh tracks will debut at Foundry 616 Jazz Club on November 23 and December 21, 2024, with the EP’s lead single, Honey Honey, set for release on November 29, 2024.
