Named by LIFE Magazine as one of the most important Americans of the 20th Century, DJ AFRIKA BAMBAATAA is a musical visionary, DJ extraordinaire, living legend and founder of the Universal Zulu Nation – a collective of socially and politically aware emcees, DJs, graffiti artists and break dancers. With over 35 years trailblazin’ around the world, Bam, as he’s affectionately known, can almost single-handedly be credited for the urban music revolution – redefining music and culture as we know it today. In fact, Bam is the person responsible for coining the term “Hip Hop” in reference to this global movement.

The man behind Hip Hop/Electro Funk classic ‘Planet Rock’ over the years has co-produced and performed with the likes of James Brown, George Clinton, UB40, Fort Knox Five, Leftfield, Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest among many others.

Bam’s futuristic soundscapes became a major influence in the development of not only hip-hop, but have also been instrumental in laying the foundation for Breaks, Electro, Freestyle, Techno and House music. “Planet Rock” has become arguably the most sampled song in music history, having been remixed and sampled by the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Westbam, George Acosta, LL Cool J, Mariah Carey and countless others. Rap/Metal band Rage Against The Machine also famously covered Bam’s track ‘Renegades of Funk’.

Still extremely active, Bam continues to record, tour and educate, maintaining his status as a living legend and forefather of the art. In 2006, Bam was honored for his incredible achievements by American music channel VH1 at the annual ‘Hip Hip Honors’ show and in 2007; he was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, Bam accepted an appointment as visiting scholar at Cornell University where he speaks to classes, meets with students, community groups and performs the music he helped create and expand.

This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to sample what a New York City Block Party is all about, live and direct from the Boogie Down Bronx! Be immersed in the knowledge of a master, icon and living treasure that is DJ AFRIKA BAMBAATAA.

HIP HOP,FUNK,RAP: Rare Zulu-Nation DJ Jazzy Jay 2 Hour Interview for redbull music academy

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The Original Jazzy Jay

Strong City Records, Premiere Artists Group, New York, USA

When it comes to the foundations of hip hop, Jazzy Jay certainly laid a couple of hefty cornerstones. A disciple of Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzy started out as a DJ in the Bronx, bringing the new sound to the New York masses, before he joined the team of Bam and Arthur Baker cold chillin’ in the studio. They captured plenty of funky sensations on tape, one track being the pioneering Planet Rock, which proved a hit among astronauts and robots alike. Since then, Jazzy helped found Def Jam records in the ’80s with Rick Rubin, working alongside Public Enemy, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys, before setting up his own studio and helping groups like Brand Nubian, A Tribe Called Quest and Fat Joe to launch their careers. Jazzy Jay is the final word in hip hop DJing, and production.

DJ JAZZY JAY (Universal Zulu Nation / Bronx, NYC) IN SYDNEY!

Universal Zulu Nation Chapter 61 and GOODGOD present…

DJ JAZZY JAY
2 hour live set playin’ old school hip hop, funk & b-boy classics!

“Celebrating the 27th Anniversary of ‘Beat Street'”

Founding member of Hip Hop’s foundational Zulu Nation, Beat Street star, the Bronx’s very own… yes, welcome the legendary DJ JAZZY JAY as he lands to rock GOODGOD this Queen’s Bday long weekend!

Witness the mix master in his first solo Sydney performance ever! Jazzy is set to lay down a blistering 2 hour set of True School Funk, Hip Hop + B-Boy/B-Girl Breaks that are sure to have you pop lockin’ and body rockin’! He has promised to serve up that old skool flavour taking you back to an era when Hip Hop was all about the funk, the boogie and the party!

Having a career that’s spanned over 30 years, Jazzy Jay is one of the true Hip Hop pioneers. In the early 1980’s his DJ skills ruled both NYC’s street parties and the city’s most famed clubs, including The Roxy and Danceteria. In 1984, Jazzy Jay famously played himself in the role of club DJ in the classic Hip-Hop film, Beat Street. This film took the four elements of Hip-Hop to the masses and became an overground hit in Australia. Marking the 27th anniversary of this groundbreaking film, Jazzy Jay will touch down in Sydney to confirm to us how fun and influential this era was.

Jay went on to become a certified hit machine when he co-produced Afrika Bambaataa’s anthemic Planet Rock and recorded the single: “Jazzy Sensation” as part of the Jazzy 5. He assisted in founding Def Jam and Strong City Records and later collaborated with the finest including The Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Fat Joe, Brand Nubian and more. His experimentation with turntable trickery saw him later inducted into the DMC DJ Hall of Fame and featured in the DJ documentary, Scratch: All The Way Live. – he’s done it all!

You know it! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Get your tickets EARLY!

Hip Hop Mix: MK-1: ‘The One in a Million’ Mixtape

MK-1, the DJ formerly know as Mista Killa releases a very personal and heart felt mixtape inspired by a mysterious woman. As much as anyone knows The Mixtape One in a Million tells a story of the relationship between two people that only lasts a short period of time. cleverly constructed MK-1 captures the essences of the relationship between Love and Pain and tosses them into an emotional melting pot for your listening pleasure.

A message from MK-1:

‘Peace and Blessings Friends and Zulu Family,

Like all great works of art, Its creator had a vision to capture the very essence of our humanity. Whether it be feelings of love, sadness, death, or an appreciation for the graces God has bestowed upon us etc.

Its been a while since i have shared with you any of my work due to a over welcomed visit of a creative mind block.

Over the past few weeks I have been inspired to create a very personal piece of work. Inspired by my personal journey and a very special individual I was gracious enough to have walk in my life for a brief moment.

I have put on my Sound Designer Hat opposed to the DJ as a means to provoke certain emotions on cue through a well constructed selection of sounds and tracks giving it a ‘cinematic’ feel. the duration is only 31 minutes to signify the 31st month of January 2010 when this journey began.

I welcome any comments you may have regarding the mix-tape: One in a Million and hope you enjoy the experience. If you choose to download please hit the accept on the event invite.

A note to all Friends and Fans, As a means for me to welcome a blank canvas in my creative expression from this moment onwards the DJ Mista Killa in no longer in venture. All future work/gigs/Appearances I will go by the name MK-1.’
