Our track of the day for Saturday 17th Sept is the infectous afro-beat sounds right out of Melbourne of The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra’s new single Mr Clean.

The will be celebrating the release tonight at Oxford Art Factorywith Sydneys own Afro Beat Power house The Liberators & Mr Gian Arpino dropping the afro inspired funk too.

The 7” single ‘Mr Clean (Pts 1 & 2),’ available in September on Hope Street Recordings through all good record stores.

The night will feature a special screening of the 1982 FELA documentary “Music Is The Weapon”  followed by live show by The Liberators & Soul Of Sydney DJ‘s + Friends paying our own special tribute with a solid dose of Afro-beat & Afro-Funk sounds to close off the night.

I got pretty excited when i found out the man who put out some of the craftiest edits and remixes of the last few years is coming to Sydney.

Canadian remixer producer and DJ U-tern is playing a special show @ Tone with supports including Gian Arpino, Frenzie, Jack Prest (Flatwound) & Mase Boogie (Paper Plane Project)

U-Tern is a prolific remixer, re-working everyone from Mark Ronson (85,000 plays on Soundcloud) to Holy Ghost, Chromeo, Juan Atkins, Kris Menace, Aeroplane and Architecture in Helsinki. He produces original production as under his Oliver moniker and hosts a weekly radio show (One Day Later) on Brooklynradio.net.

He also produces under the name OLIVER with Oliver Goldstein – which is well worth checking too.

suburbs of Perth, Australia, singer Randa Khamis caught the black music bug early. At the age of 12 she was talking her way into local clubs,
desperate to dance to the sounds of James Brown, Parliament, Kurtis
Blow, Ann Sexton and Aretha Franklin.

During her 20’s, Randa took up Belly Dancing and wanted to start
combining the use of Arabic rhythms with soul/funk vocals. She moved to London and began working with Moroccan band MOMO, KINOBE and Sasha Baron Cohens’ brother’s band ‘Zohar’ singing in Arabic. But it was with Leigh Gracie’s deep funk band ‘Speedometer’ that she spent much of her time singing, and after supporting the legend Eddie Bo, began touring with him in New Orleans, where he passed on his vast musical knowledge about performance and song writing. With this priceless experience under her belt, she returned to Perth, ready to harness her writing and recording experiences with her new band ‘Randa & The Soul Kingdom’. Moula Bux is a return to her Middle Eastern roots entwined in her funk/soul vocal influences.

Randa & The Soul Kingdom formed out of a common desire to write and perform in an authentic pledge to their funk/soul roots. A six piece band, consisting of trumpet, sax, drums, guitar, bass and vocals, they imbue a live, classic funk sound with a dynamic fresh edge they can safely call their own striking a balance between talented musicianship and emotional content. Receiving accolades from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings when performing in support, a debut single for sale
