DUB REGGAE AFRO-BEAT FELA: Bob Marly-Exodus (Bill Laswell Dub) + Fela: Music Is The Weapon Screening (African Film Festival Sydney) Feat The Liberators & Soul of Sydney DJ’s

After a hard day’s work, some people rush to the bottle, some the pipe. While others just turn on their speakers.

This is one for those kinds of people, my kind of people. Perfect Monday night vibes.

Bob Marly – Exodus (Bill Laswell Dub)

Also for those into African Music vibes be sure to keen an ear out for the African Film Festival fundraiser “MUSIC IS THE WEAPON’  that will showcase the amazing documentary from 1983 on FELA KUTI by the same name. The night will also feature Sydney’s own AFRO BEAT legends The Liberators play live in a rare personal tribute to some of their inspirations followed by Soul Of Sydney DJ’s & Friends paying our own special tribute with a solid dose of Afro-Beat & Afro-Funk sounds to close off the night.

Worldwize.

If you are in need of some fresh tunes, check out Blue King Brown’s latest album released in Augsut, “Worldwize: Part 1 – North & South” which was released in August. It comes as a two-disc album ‘North’ & ‘South’ and their band’s official flag! So dope.

Southside consists of tracks that are a blend of roots, reggae, funk and soul. Northside has a blend of remixes of previous singles and dub-style tracks. BKB are a Melbourne-based band who derives from diverse multicultural backgrounds which contributes to their unique sounds.

Not only do they have the capacity to get the crowd rockin but their music is all about being socially aware in regards to human rights, social justice and political issues throughout the world including Australia. Their message is that ‘being aware is one thing, but the people have the power to make a difference in the world’. To be the change. Blue King Brown has been involved in the change process throughout their music and works of activism. More recently BKB have teamed up with THE BODY SHOP and CHILDWISE to help fight against the child sex trafficking and slave industry. It is a massive human rights abuse that needs to be (and can be) prevented.

BKB have recently returned from their European tour and about to do some Australian gigs. They’ve also just finished their tour with John Butler Trio which I am very sad to have missed out.
BKB have played at some of the world’s biggest music festivals such as:
“BIG DAY OUT 2008
Live Earth 2007
East Coast Blues & Roots festival 2006, 2007, 2010 (Australia)
West Coast Blues & Roots festival 2006, 2007 (Australia)
Reggae Town 2007
Womadelaide 2007 (Australia)
Falls festival 2006 (Australia)
Southbound 2007(Australia)
Homebake 2007(Australia)
Woodford folk fest 2005 2006 2007(Australia)
JJJ AWOL SERIES 2007(Australia)
Summer Sonic 2007(Japan)
Green Room festival 2006 2007 2010(Japan)
Fiji’s World Music Festival 2006 (Fiji)
just to name a few…”*
They have also opened for:
“Santana
Michael Franti & Spearhead
Damian “Jr Gong” Marley
John Butler Trio
Silverchair
Powderfinger
The Cat Empire
Cody Chesnutt
Amongst others…”*
If you ever get a chance to go to one of their gigs, do so! Personally I was hooked since I saw them play live at Raggamuffin in Brisbane earlier this year.

Boom Monk Ben (Solid Steel, UK)

Armed with Serato, two quick hands and the most diverse crate of dance floor fillers you’ve heard, the Boom Monk has developed a sound and style that is undoubtedly his own. Boom Monk Ben continues to be booked for some of the biggest and best electronic music events around and as his reputation grows the list of suitors keeps expanding. A frenzied fanatic of all things bass, the Boom Monk leaves no stone unturned and no sound unheard in his quest for dancefloor devastation. From hip hop, dancehall, funk and break beats to house, funky, electro, dubstep and drum and bass, as long as it makes him, us and you move on the floor then it will get put the through the blender in his inimitable style. The mighty Ninja Tune have been impressed enough to approach Ben to provide a series of ‘Boom Monk Zen’ mixes for their world famous Solid Steel radio show, which is broadcast in 30 countries world wide.

Cheeba (Ninja Tune, UK) – A/V set

Peel back your ears, stick matchsticks in your eyes, set your jaw to ‘drop’… Bristol’s, Detective of Perspective, DJ Cheeba is plugged in and here to turn the tables. With his trademark slick blend of classic breaks, hip-hop, electronica, rock, kid’s records, d&b, and in fact everything in between and beyond, Cheeba has the unrivaled technical ability, knowledge and humour to pull it all together like no one else. In 2008 Cheeba won the coveted ‘Solid Steel Mix of The Year’ with his, highly regarded, genre twisting mixtape ‘The Case of The missing Records’ and has since been invited to officially join the Solid Steel family alongside Ninja Tune legends such as Coldcut and DJ Food. Using standard turntables and Serato Video SL to enable video controlled by real vinyl records, Cheeba now has brought scratching and juggling both sounds and pictures into the mix with additional camera feeds and special FX for stunning live results.
