About Say Whut?!
After surviving a collision with a tanker truck filled with milk and toxic waste (it was a special truck) when he was just a boy, DJ SayWhut?! was in a coma for 4 years where he dreamt of nothing but cheeseburgers. When he awoke he found that he had the ability to hear lower end frequencies very clearly and could foresee what the next song was going to be chosen (in shuffle mode) on a person’s iPod from 100 yards away. The iPod was then invented 15 years later. This brought on a revelation that he should play music in some form or another. When making fart noises with his armpits wasn’t enough he decided to pick up the headphones and become a DJ.
Cutting his teeth as a breakbeat DJ in Sydney in 2004, DJ SayWhut?! has always been known to play some of the funkiest basslines in breaks – keeping it hard and bouncy yet keeping the people dancing on the floor. With residencies at Broke’n’beats @ Kink and Chinese Laundry, SayWhut?! has played to a wide variety of crowds knocking them senseless to the floor with his barrage of bassline melodies and quick mixing ability. After the breakbeat phenomenon went out of fashion, SayWhut?! looked towards more organic sounds and started playing funk, soul, disco, boogie, hip hop and R&B still staying true to that funky bassline mentality.

Catch DJ Say Whut?! playing some regular residencies around town Ravisis in Bondi, at our Soul of Sydney Block Parties & this weeks ‘History of Hip Hop’ special as part of Sydney Fringe Festival.

HISTORY OF HIP HOP – THURS Sept 12 :

2SER’s popular History of Hip Hop series returns to Sydney Fringe. Stepping back in the ring for bout three, it’s East Coast versus West Coast as 2SER’s own DJ Frenzie (Groove Therapy) and the In The Red crew go up against Raine Supreme and Saywhut.

Lioness presents Mark De Clive Lowe (Tru Thoughts / LA) Warehouse party.

Lioness proudly presents…

Globe-trotting, beat-making, key-tickling NZ-export Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL).

The Auckland native has been based in the musical hotbed of Los Angeles since relocating there after his decade-long stint in London’s underground scene alongside the likes of 4Hero, Benji B and Bugz in the Attic.

His most recent album ‘Renegades’ is released on UK tastemaker label Tru Thoughts and features MdCL in producer mode with collaborators nia andrews, Omar, ‘Suite for Ma Dukes’ arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, legendary percussionist Sheila E, D’angelo’s regular man on bass Pino Palladino and more stellar friends. It’s an album that prompted Okayplayer to appropriately christen MdCL “an underground phenom” and earned his new music hi-rotation worldwide. He’s already a fixture on both coasts of the USA with his monthly resident clubnites in LA and NYC alongside guests ranging from Brainfeeder’s Gaslamp Killer to jazz-crooner Jose James and drummer-extraordinaire Chris Daddy Dave.

MdCL will be coming to Sydney straight off a three week Europe tour and a quick pit stop shows in NYC/NZ. He’s bringing us a unique live show he calls REMIX:LIVE…

“The remix has always been such a fundamental part of club culture – recontextualizing something from what it was to something else completely new. I have vocal accapellas playing on the turntables and then create the beats and music on the fly, building complete remixes in real time as they happen. I’m making the records at the same time as you’re hearing them. Every show has a different vibe and I love sharing that…” – Mark de Clive-Lowe

It’s a one-man live show that has the likes of Masters At Work’s Louie Vega, hip hop legend DJ Spinna and party rocker DJ Karizma in awe – the latter calling MdCL “the illest dude I have ever seen live”. Remixing everything from his own productions to club and soul classics, even the legends aren’t safe. De Clive-Lowe says, “I love taking something everyone knows, even say a Stevie Wonder joint, and giving it a completely different setting that no one would expect or imagine.”

Coming to a dancefloor near you …

See you on the first day of winter (01/06)!

We promise to keep you warm!

Check us on youtube:

Humans have used masks for different purposes throughout time. One of the main reasons has been to create a different atmosphere in parties involving music, dance and art.

Knowing that the word Bossa was a typical slang originated in Brazil to describe anything that could be ‘cool’, we decided to put on a party to bring the cool attitude of Multicultural Sydney at its best. We are going to transform one of the best live music venues in Sydney (Blue Beat) into a ‘ludic’ night of music and dance.

Featuring Abuka an upcoming power trio that has been known all over Sydney by its delivery of funky infused grooves that allow our senses to experience different sounds and rhythms. In other words be prepared for a heavy dose of mix Brazilian rhythms with jazz and funk.

Alongside the terrific Abuka, Dj La Veneria and Dj Rapha (Vibez Brazil) we’ll keep you busy in the dance floor in a mix range of funky cheeky tunes and up-beat tropical sounds of Latin America.

Choose your mask, dust off your dancing shoes and be prepared for this unmissable and exotic night full of funky grooves! Damn!

See you on the Grass Dancefloor!

Phil & Sam @ Soul of Sydney & Co.

NOTE: If you haven’t sent you for mobile number can you please forward to soulofsydney@gmail.com in the event we do have to move the party last minute?

A  Few points that might help you organise you day better;

  • It is a FAMILY FRIENDLY PICNIC first and foremost so might be a good idea really to pack for a Sunday Picnic in the park (eski/ picnic basket, fruit, drinks and something to sit on etc.)
  • We have a spot with a stack of grass around with plenty of room for kids, it is 5 mins from city around Alexandria, there is shade but best people bring some hats etc.
  • We will have a Sound System with selectors playing an eclectic mix of real music including everything from Sade to James Brown to De La Soul, Erykah Badu & Masters At Work, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles.
  • It is open decks with rotating DJ’s (but best people get in touch via soulofsydney@gmail.com if keen to play to confirm time slots)
  • We usually aim to get everything starting at about 12pm with ending time around depending on vibe.
  • We will be waiting for the weather forecast before we make the call as it is outdoors, if it does look like it’s going to rain then we will simply move till next sunny Sunday. (We will be in touch a few days out for the event via email & on the day via SMS in case we have to move the party, so we will need your Mobile details too so we can get location details quicker)
  • ARTIST CALL OUT: If you are a local Musician, MC, Singer, Percussionist or DJ then we are very keen to hear from you if you would like to play, especially if you down to play percussion along the Djs in an open jam vibe for Sunday. (we are hoping to get thing going as a regular Sunday afternoon local soul funk and hip hop open jam session so if your keen to be part of it let us know)
  • For local Soul music fan then we simply wants you there enjoying the music, so get a group of friends together, spread the word and come down for a day out it the park to some real music.

Thanks again for getting behind the idea kids.. Sydney definitely needs more people like YOU!

Pray for good weather & hope to see you all at the next one.

Peace,

Soul of Sydney and Co.
