DJ Trey – The Crowd Controller

Ms Hennessey Speaks: DJ Trey

Ms Hennessey Speaks Blog

He is one of Sydney’s most favoured R&B / Soul DJ’s, playing to club crowds and concert goers in the throngs. Possessing a knack for blending and mixing together the right tracks at the right intervals is all part of the DJ Trey set – he never misses a beat when it comes to the beat mix and utilises the DJ scratch to its maximum for added effect. You could say Trey knows how to play the crowd like vinyl, spinning them into frenzy until the coin drops.

He is a veteran to this DJ game despite his youthful disposition, and attains the musical knowledge and ear equivalent to that of a vintage Mowtown producer – picks the hits but honours the classics. Step into a DJ Trey set and you are instantly transported to a world where funk and soul have a perfect marriage and hip hop is the…

Funk Vinyl: Pre-Order Saun And Starr’s Debut 45 Daptone

It is our distinct pleasure to present the debut release by two women who will forever change the Soul game: Saun & Starr. Like a two-headed Phoenix rising from the ashes of a bygone era when the duets of Sam & Dave, James & Bobby Purify, and Marvin & Tammi danced upon the airwaves, Saun & Starr have redefined the possibilities of what a great Soul duo can be. Though they each possess a tone and style that commands attention, together their voices compliment each other perfectly, lifting their sound to elevations neither could reach alone –– harmonies and phrases playfully intertwining to form the architecture for a soulful fortress of vocal prowess. This is obvious to anyone who’s heard them backing up Miss Sharon Jones (on stage or on record) under the loving pseudonym “The Dapettes.”

Though they are currently in the studio putting finishing touches on their debut full length album, two of their tunes have thankfully been committed to seven inch wax. The A-Side, ‘Hot Shot’ is a feel-good shaker that features the inexplicable range of Miss Starr Duncan Lowe, backed staunchly by the “Baddest Band in the Land”, The Dap-Kings. The flip, ‘Gonna Make Time’, showcases Saundra “Saun” Williams’ smooth, smoky vocal, atop a bed of deep low-rider soul. If this 45 ain’t your bag, please go lay down on a busy street. There’s no hope for you.

Pre-order their debut 45″ now from the Super Soul Super Store.

You can stream “Hot Shot” on our Soundcloud page. And don’t forget to get to the Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings shows early to see Saun & Starr perform!

Phife of A Tribe Called Quest Debuts The Official Video For “dear Dilla”

J Dilla-mania continues as legendary MC Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest unveils the official video for his new single “dear Dilla“–via Okayplayer! You probably have already bugged out over the fearless honesty of Phife’s personal letter to the dearly departed and DJ Rasta Root’s flip of the Dilla-touched break. But now “dear Dilla” get’s the visual treatment it deserves. Phife and Rasta Root took no shortcuts in making their dream vision a reality, taking their cameras to the corner of MacDougall and Nevada on Detroit’s East Side, recruiting Ma Dukes Yancey for a touching cameo and even risking funky diabetic relapse by partaking of an actual Dilla donut??

You’ll have to watch to enjoy all the little moments and appropriate touches but suffice to say that Phife and crew did this project right!

AUS HIP HOP: Thundamentals So We Can Remember New Album + Tour

PRESENTED BY Niche, triple j & Nathan Farrell Entertainment

So We Can Remember Album Release & Tour Dates

New single ‘Something I Said [ft. Thom

Just months after romantic first single ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ romped to success, spawning sold-out headline gigs in every town on the tour, and proving a crowd favourite at Thundamentals’ 2013 festival appearances —Sprung Festival, Southbound and Falls Festival — the Sydney trio are back in full force. Having just announced, in a triple j exclusive, a massive run of dates to celebrate the [seriously] long-awaited release of third album So We Can Remember, out Fri 2 May through Obese Records, Thundamentals present second single ‘Something I Said [ft. Thom Crawford]’ to stave off some of the anticipation.

Safe to say So We Can Remember will be lovingly welcomed by the trio’s fans — ‘Thundakats’ — who have been waiting patiently since 2011 for a follow up to the group’s second record Foreverlution; a release that saw Thundamentals’ first entries in both the ARIA and the AIR Charts: #19 on ARIA Australian Charts, #17 on ARIA Urban Charts and #3 on the AIR Charts.

Fans came out in force for So We Can Remember lead single ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’, creating a #5 debut on the iTunes Hip Hop Charts, and voting the love song into position #32 in triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown – the highest position gained by a local hip hop song for the entire year and Thundamentals’ second appearance in the nationally-celebrated radio event. The accompanying Tarantino-esque film clip did alright for itself too, clocking up nearly 385,000 views on YouTube, grabbing both Channel V and Rage TV’s ‘Clip Of The Week’ upon release with viewers of the latter getting ‘Smiles…’ to #44 on the publicly voted Rage TV ‘Best Clips Of 2013’[the only local
hip hop track to make the cut], along with a nomination for the ‘Best Music Video’ at the triple j awards, and two wins for Best Hip-Hip Music Video Australia 2013 and Best Independent Music Video NSW 2013 in The Australian Independent Music Video Awards 2013.

The much-loved Blue Mountains via Newtown hip hop trio now, with second single ‘Something I Said [ft. Thom
Crawford]’, flick fans another curve ball continuing their tendency to parallel light and dark in their compositions: while MCs Tuka and Jeswon lyrically level rolled eyes at childish gossips, DJ Morgs drops in the ruckus of kids’ playgrounds to drive it home, layering old school beats with a triumphant horn section, handclaps and cute, bouncing, piano to underscore Oscar nominee Thom Crawford’s lamenting, soulful vocal in a song destined to be a crowd favourite on the album tour.

Getting across as much of the country as possible, Thundamentals are touring So We Can Remember as part of the national, regional Groovin The Moo festival juggernaut, as well as playing their own major city launches. For a band who’s past shows have included supports for A Tribe Called Quest, Big Boi [Outkast], MF Doom, Lyrics Born, Drapht, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Thundamentals are one of Australia’s most accomplished and energetic live acts.

Gearing up for the first Pozible Pop Up Sydney

• DJ High Society to take care of the tunes on opening night

With just over a week to go, its time for Sydney to get ready for the new kids on the creative block to showcase their wares at the Anything’s Pozible Pop Up at the Makery on Oxford, from March 7 to 13

“This is a celebration and a bringing together of many of the local crowdfunding campaigns run on Pozible, where those who have supported their campaigns have a chance to see them come to fruition,” said Pozible Co-Founder and Director, Rick Chen.
Those whose works will be showcased range from musician Oliver Tank, to photographer Kris Baum, t-shirt designers Bloodless and many, many more.

Among those whose successful Pozible campaigns will be on display, includes four local film makers whose works will be on display at the Xanadu Wines Short Film Night on March 10, including:
• Kelli Jean Drinkwater’s story of a fat femme synchronised swimming team: ‘Aquaporko’
• Shane McLachlen’s documentary about the realities of being homeless on Sydney streets, ‘I Am Hank – I am homeless’
• Stuart Bowen’s stop motion animation about a doll who dreams of playing the piano with paddles for hands: ‘Woody’
• And Anita Lee’s tale of a lonely 20-something who looks for her doppelganger to fill a void: ‘Only One’.

Tickets and more details about the Xanadu Wines Short Film Night are available at this link.

Anything’s Pozible Pop Up Sydney celebrates the 600 local creatives that have successfully crowdfunded on Pozible, and offers them the opportunity to be showcased and some wonderful workshops to help them to take their projects to another level, or to help anyone who is considering crowdfunding to get onboard.

“Our event line-up includes talks with some of Australia’s most well-respected designers, entrepreneurs and creatives, including David Gravina from Digital Eskimo, Flyn Tracy from Tractor Design School, Frankie Ratford from The Design Kids and Kiel Van Daal from Digilante who will be involved in the Design Talk on Tuesday March 11,” said Mr Chen.

The event will kick off at the Makery at 6:00pm on Friday 7 March. Entry is a five dollar donation. Free drinks will be available all night from sponsors Little Creatures, Xanadu Wines and successful crowdfunder MR BLACK liquor, with tunes from Djs High Society.
The Closing Night will also be un-missable, with the guys from guerilla travelling music festival Train Tracks taking the Pop Up on an adventure through Sydney.

“At Train Tracks we strive to change people’s perceptions of the public spaces around them, from an old train carriage, to a lonely patch of grass. We are very excited to be closing Pozible Pop Up Sydney with a one of a kind Train Tracks event,” said Train Tracks’ curator Dean Ginsberg.
