In November, Classic Album Sundays Sydney teams up with Afrobrasiliana Soundsystem to bring you a vinyl listening experience featuring two epic albums from the late master of Afrobeat, Fela Ransome Kuti, and his legendary band, Afrika ’70.

Fela’s incendiary sound, with its never-matched fusion of African polyrhythms, funk and jazz, and its rebellious, anticolonial political themes, continues to inspire and captivate millions of fans and new listeners around the world to this day. These two phenomenal albums, from 1976 and 1975 respectively, on high-quality vinyl courtesy of Knitting Factory Records and played on our hi-fi system, are sure to light up the intimate Bordello at The World Bar.

But that’s far from all: before and after the playback of the albums, the funkmeisters from Afrobrasiliana Soundsystem will keep the dancefloor hot with their deep crates of Afro, samba, funk and all manner of global groove. It’s going to be a powerhouse evening of beats and soul in tribute to the motherland!

Tickets are $15 in advance from Resident Advisor: https://www.residentadvisor.net/events/1026057

Tickets will also be available on the door during the afterparty.

Hosts: J.P. Ducharne (The Mancusian Circus), Jim Poe (Deep House Australia)

About Classic Album Sundays:

Classic Album Sundays is the world’s most popular record club. CAS allows the listener to fully immerse themselves in the music by presenting the musical context, the story behind the album and an uninterrupted replay of the album on vinyl on an audiophile hi-fi sound system (with phones switched off and no conversation). People learn about the history of the album and then hear things in the music that they have never heard before. The events are mainly attended by non-audiophiles who are sometimes moved to tears when they hear the details of their favourite recordings.

CAS currently holds regular classic-album listening sessions in London, New York, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Oslo and many more cities. As it has touched upon a cultural nerve with its mission of challenging the way we listen to music in the 21st century, CAS has received amazing coverage in BBC Breakfast TV, The Guardian, Elle Magazine, NME, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and more.

Check out the wonderful article about CAS Sydney by Kate Hennessy in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/…/in-full-on-vinyl-no-chatter-h…

Classic Album Sundays was founded by Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy. Murphy is a radio host (having hosted shows since 1982 and having produced widely syndicated radio shows in the USA); an international audiophile DJ (protegé of David Mancuso and Francois Kevorkian and Director of London’s Lucky Cloud Sound System); music producer and remixer (remixes for The Rapture on DFA and producing Wild Rumpus with guitarist Gary Lucas of Captain Beefheart and Jeff Buckley fame); independent label owner (Bitches Brew); and a music journalist. In her younger years, Murphy worked for a number of well-known record shops, where she amassed far too many records.

About Afrobrasiliana Soundsystem:

Afrobrasiliana is a collective of DJs and record collectors focusing on tropical dance floor sounds from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond.

Starting out as a party founded by El Chino and Tom Studdy, it’s now akin to a family with Astronafrica, @Walking Fish, @DJ JöN and Paris Groovescooter joining the crew after a string of successful sessions.

Specialising in old and new tropical sounds from many of our favourite musical hot spots we play host to regular sessions where we explore these vibes and rhythms through music, dance and good times.
