TONIGHT: SNAPBACK AUCTION – A night of LIVE Neo Soul, RNB, Hip Hop goodness at at Playbar

The Snap Back Auction
on tonight at Playbar

A night of live Neo Soul, R&B, Hip Hop goodness.
On tonight – Thurs 25th Feb 2016.

Play Bar present a free mid week social for Sydney’s hip hop music and dance culture. Built on the ideas of busking; a snapback is passed around collecting donations from the community but here the most charitable contributor takes the cap home to keep. “Snapback Auction” is a ‘pay as you feel’ event to support and enjoy artists.

Featuring local Neo Soul, R&B, Alt Hip Hop jams to get down to and street art to perv on. In residence is the musical and dance stylings of Jon Cotton & the Book Keepers, comically but accurately coined as Justin Timberlake for Hipsters

Luke Dixon – The Slim Silverback on the Tubs
Tim Sampson – The Badass Bonobo with the Bass
Paul Meo – The Melodic Mandrill on the Keys and Trumpet
Sela Moon – The Capuchin Chica with the Vocals
Chux Montano – The Low Key Lemur with the Lyrics

Raised on Fred Astaire and the Fresh Prince of Belair and tethered between the cocky and the cavalier Jon Cotton leads a revolution revolving around the hip flicks and vocal tricks of a crooner in a snap back. A front man doing the frezno in a fedora sung out on D’Angelo and Sinatra. He can teach you how to dougie and how to drink a single malt. A live show known for its ineffable class and swagger in a room full of flailing limbs and head tilted shut eye choirs belt anthems with carelessly raised hands. A believer in sex and chivalry and in gospel being a message not a genre. From vaudeville, to big band, to 808s, Jon Cotton is the adopted apostle of appropriation who will meet you kindly between Gene Kelly and Frank Ocean on the edge of the stage and the begging of reverie.

Keep Sydney Open Rally on THIS SUNDAY from 12:30 pm at Belmore Park

Dear lover of Sydney!

The time has come for all of us to show what people power can do. You signed the petition, you liked us on Facebook, you’ve had countless whinges to your mates and the cab driver, now it’s time for the real test. Nothing makes a statement like boots on the ground, and this Sunday you’ll have your opportunity to march against these ridiculous lockouts.

The rally will meet at Belmore Park in Central at 12:30pm before heading further into the city and onto Hyde Park. Dave Faulkner from Hoodoo Gurus, Isabella Manfredi fromThe Preatures, author and Crikey political editor Bernard Keane will be speaking alongside Tyson Koh from Keep Sydney Open. And we’re excited to announce it here first: Nina Las Vegas will jump on the mic and play a few tunes!

All this as well as live performances from Art vs Science and Royal Headache. It’s a celebration of all that is good in Sydney!

You can help make the march a success and more fun…

– Make a sign. Because that’s what you do at protests! But remember: clever > insulting.

– Look out for each other, because with the numbers we’re expecting it might get overwhelming.

– Bring friends and family. Every. Person. Matters.

If you are keen to help out on the day or in the lead-up, please write totyson.

If you’re keen to wear a Keep Sydney Open t-shirt, you can pick some up from Freda’s Bar in Chippendale during the week for $20. There will also be a few floating around at the rally.

It’s been an amazing ride these last couple of weeks, and we want to thank you for taking this issue to heart. Some of you have been with us for over two years now and you’ll appreciate the journey it’s been getting to this point.

Remember, Melbourne got rid of their lockout with a turnout of 17,000 people. Not meaning to stir up the rivalry but we can do better! We have to.

See you and your mates on Sunday 🙂

TOUR NEWS: Prince is heading to SYDNEY THIS FEB

Almost four years since his last Australian tour, Prince is returning later this month for a much more intimate tour.

The solo shows, known as the Piano And Microphone tour, will be the most scaled back shows Prince has performed outside his now legendary (very) late night performances at small clubs and bars such as Bennetts Lane in Melbourne and the Basement in Sydney, hours after his stadium and arena shows have closed down.

Mixtape: Rare Australian Soul + Funk, Boogie and Disco H.E.A.T by DJ MK-1 and DJ Kinetic

Absolutely loving this mix from our good friends local crate diggers, DJ’s, Radio Hosts and all round legends, DJ Kinetic and MK-1.

An hour plus of the finest rare homegrown Australian Funk, Soul, Disco & Boogie sounds from the 60’s and 70’s and beyond.

We have had this on repeat since they released it last week on January 26 (Australia Day Long) and it is honestly one of the most well researched and well put together mix we have been lucky enough to hear.

Props to these cats for taking the initiative and putting it the man-hours to dig through to find so many of these gems.

Check it out in full and be sure to give these cats some love online and check them out for more killer mixes.
