We have a lot to thank the message boards of Okayplayer.com for. Not only have they connected musicians and creatives across the globe through the experience of sound and music, but they have also birthed one of the most influential and progressive hip hop / electronic groups to date. Foreign Exchange are the counterpoint of what lies between a great music and soul shifting music, with their take of fusing the right combination of soul, hip hop and electronic beats to create a sound that is transcendent above the rest.
When Phonte Coleman, US rapper ( North Carolina ) and part of organic hip hop outfit Little Brother met with celebrated Dutch beat maker Nicolay in the online musicians forum on Okayplayer.com some 13 years ago ( 2002) , little did the pair know just how important their union would be to the shaping of the alternative hip hop movement…

CITY OF LIGHT
City of Light is the first single to be released from the enigmatic Sydney based multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Sugarz. Kimberly Aviso known in Sydney’s local music community strapped with a guitar, looper and an eclectic musical palette, spearheads Sugarz. Sugarz is a creative collaborative revolving door project consisting of various producers and musicians. Each cluster of music created is different from the previous release, creating a catalogue of music as open-minded as a Sugarz intends to be.
With distribution release from UK label Gulf Point Records, City of Light is a throwback sound to 80’s boogie with a perfect splash of pop vocal stylistics to compliment the dynamic nostalgia captured in City of Light. Produced by Melbourne electronica, boogie and funk producer Benny Badge aka Freeqwency, an Oberheim DX for the drum rolls and Yamaha DX-7 keys was used to replicate an authentic sound most commonly used in 80’s funk and boogie production.
What shines in this track is her descriptive and compelling storytelling, transporting you to another place in time where kings, queens and Shakespeare reigned supreme. The juxtaposition of Sugarz’ vivid lyrical content on a backdrop of 80’s boogie creates a seamless marriage between two different eras.
City of Light will be released this Monday the 22nd of June through Gulf Point records with a limited edition 7’ vinyl pressing and video release soon!
