LIVE SOUL MUSIC TONIGHT: THE REBIRTH OF FRESH! feat. JEREMY GREGORY | Friday Oct 24 at Gingers

#GenerationNuSoul is proud to present The Rebirth Of Fresh, an exploration through iconic music. The Rebirth Of Fresh is a new weekly event held at Ginger’s in Darlinghurst that sees Sydney’s freshest musicians and vocalists tap into their creative expression and push sonic boundaries as they interpret an iconic album or producer’s body of work. With a new theme to deconstruct each month, a different guest vocalist each week and alternating between two house bands, The Rebirth Of Fresh will take the audience on a unique trip each Friday night.

In October we are pleased to officially launch The Rebirth Of Fresh at Ginger’s with two dates – October 10th and 24th – before taking up residency every Friday night at Ginger’s from November. In light of Stevie Wonder’s announcement of an 11 city US tour of one of his most treasured albums, what better way to kick off The Rebirth Of Fresh than to knock audiences off their feet as the bands pay tribute to and reinterpret his Songs In the Key Of Lifedouble album.

The opening dates will feature two unique and very different vocalists. On October 10th the sensual, jazz inflected vocals of Wallace Gollan will be tackling classic tracks such as ‘As’, ‘Another Star’ and ‘Love’s In Need Of Love’ with in demand musicians Kristen Fletcher on keys, Martin Serra on bass, and Dom Cabrera on drums.

October 24th will see the powerhouse ARIA nominated vocalist Jeremy Gregory put his spin on Songs In the Key Of Life alongside Tully Ryan on drums, Joel Jenkins on keys and more to be announced.

With songs that tackle all spectrums of life – from social consciousness (‘Pastime Paradise’) to the pure joy of parenthood (‘Isn’t She Lovely’) and the complicated yet beautiful nature of relationships (‘Knocks Me Off My Feet’), Stevie Wonder’s Grammy award winning album, Songs In The Key Of Life, is as pertinent today as it was at the time of its release in 1976. The double album featured the hits, ‘I Wish’, ‘Another Star’, ‘Sir Duke’ and ‘As’ and featured a who’s who of guest musicians and vocalists including George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams.

Where will this quintessential soul/pop album be taken to at The Rebirth Of Fresh? All will be revealed on October 10th at the debut of #GenerationNuSoul presents The Rebirth Of Fresh at Ginger’s. With an entry price that’s little more than that of a cup of coffee, Sydney’s music lovers will be ensured a night of genre-defying music that delivers more of a buzz than their morning caffeine hit.

What: The Rebirth Of Fresh: Reinterpreting Stevie Wonder’s ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’

Where: Ginger’s, 134 Oxford St, Darlinghurst

Price: $5 at the door

When: Doors open 730pm | Friday October 10 | Friday October 24 | every Friday from November

Jeremy-Gregory-bw

Born in Durban, South Africa, Jeremy Gregory’s introduction to the diverse world of contemporary music didn’t begin until his early teens. With nothing but heavy gospel influence in his house, he started listening to bands like Boys II Men and Jodeci, and realised that pop music could also be really passionate and that opened a lot of doors.

He soon discovered Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Sly & the Family Stone and many other great soul, urban blues, R&B and pop artists dating all the way back to the 50s.

With powerhouse vocals paired with impeccable stage presence, Jeremy Gregory is a born entertainer and has the ability to captivate audiences from the first note on.

Guest Vocalist: Jeremy Gregory

Band: Joel Jenkins (keys)

Tully Ryan (drums)

More to be announced!

Detroit Hi-Tech Jazz dons UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE heading to SYDNEY |

PICNIC PRESENTS UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE: TIMELINE (LIVE)

$35 EARLY BIRDS AVAILABLE NOW THRU RESIDENT ADVISOR

The Underground Resistance collective, started by Detroit second-wave trinity Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and Mike Banks in 1990, has become a living representation of the original spirit of techno: a music that looks to the future, that is underground, experimental and radical in its aesthetic and technological vision. This is the sound that was born in a city dominated by the robots of the automotive industry. This is the sound of a reality and not of any science fiction fantasy. A sound born in a city with a rich and unique musical history: grooved by jazz, awakened by Motown rhythms, sophisticated by soul and brought together by techno and hip hop – and still vibrant and essential to the present day world musical map. In their current live set-up, Underground Resistance is led by Mike Banks on keyboard duties, and includes an ensemble of Jon Dixon (also on keyboards), De’Sean Jones (saxophone) and DJ Mark Flash. Underground Resistance Presents Timeline Live – an adventure through the musical mazes of Detroit, between jazz and techno, between the past and the future.

They’ll be gracing the stage of the Imperial Hotel, bringing 25 years of dance music history to a Picnic night not to be missed. Support from three of Sydney’s own legend-status DJs: Simon Caldwell, Ben Fester and Kali. The music starts at 10pm and stops with the rising of the sun.

INTERVIEW: 5 Questions with Soul Singer Travis Lee

5 Questions with Soul Singer Travis Lee

Travis Lee is a soul singer who encapsulates the true epitome of what soul should be, he reigns from Brisbane and he first came into our radar when we were blown away by his track ‘Next 2 Me.’ Soul of Sydney sits down and asks Travis Lee 5 questions to get to know the artist a bit more ahead of his ‘Reflections’ EP, due to drop on the 7th November.

Who is your favourite local soul artist?

Local act would have to be ‘Jordan Rakei’; he has definitely captured a sound that emulates a lot of the greats such as D’angelo, Robert Glasper & Fat Freddy’s Drop. I really enjoy his music.

How did you first get into soul?

In essence I believe soul music has always been there for me growing up, but I think I began to gain a real love and appreciation for it when I started studying music.

What music do your parents listen to?

Dad & mum listened to so much different types of music from; Diana Ross, Eagles, Elton John, David Bowie, country music & traditional music.

If you weren’t singing what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t singing I would definitely be producing music which is my other passion.

Why should the world pay attention to Travis Lee?

No particular reason, I’m pretty humble and just enjoy making music that feels good, and I hope to make other people feel good too.
