Sonic Architects’ National Conference:
Feat. HIATUS KAIYOTE / REMI / KIRKIS / SILENTJAY & JACE XL
|
Sonic Architects National Conference is touring the nation this November / December, taking four of Australia’s most exciting acts on the road, together!
Featuring boundary-pushing Melbourne based artists Hiatus Kaiyote, Remi, Kirkis and Silent Jay & Jace XL, Sonic Architects National Conference is set to be an all out four-hour live sound-clash!
This mélange of artists comes together from four disparate schools of sound but all share the same ideology of innovation. Their songs were built in the underground, with no blueprints, designed with intuition and inspiring a new breed of Australian artist.
Expect on stage collaborations, surprise guests and a whole lot more!
HIATUS KAIYOTE
Hiatus Kaiyote are the first Australian act to be nominated for an R&B Grammy award, yet they stand incomparable to anyone in the whole world of R&B/soul. Their sound references a swathe of influences – electric, acoustic, futuristic, psychedelic, progressive, soothing and urgent – slipping in and out genre and defying definition.
Seen as a sonic Voltron between four artists (Nai Palm, Simon Mavin, Paul Bender, Perrin Moss) over the past 12 months Hiatus Kaiyote have toured the world relentlessly – selling out shows across North America, Europe and Africa – since re-releasing their self produced Tawk Tomahawk EP on Salaam Remi’s (Amy Winehouse, Fugees, Nas) new label Flying Buddha.
They count some of the most innovative artists alive today as fans (Prince, Pharrell Williams, Erykah Badu, Flying Lotus, Questlove) and are uncompromising in their musical vision and philosophy as chief songwriter Nai Palm explains “I see our music as creating a sonic sanctuary for people. The more levels that I can expand to the more powerful it is. Basically my greatest joy is to enhance people’s emotional experiences and imagination. I want to contribute to how vivid people’s lives are.”
REMI
23-year-old Melbourne artist REMI is the fastest-rising Hip Hop act in Australia and is quickly gaining the attention of international tastemakers.
With a triple J Unearthed Artist of the year J Award already on the shelf, REMI’s new album RAW X INFINITY has received critical acclaim locally and abroad, landing Feature Album of the Week on triple J, and being nominated for the AIR Awards ‘Independent Hip Hop Album of the Year". With no less than four singles currently getting radio airplay across the country, love from the likes of international tastemaker blog OkayAfrica and a string of UK and EU shows coming up in November, to cap it off REMI has just been nominated for ‘Australian Breakthrough Artist of the Year’.
KIRKIS
Kirkis, the brainchild of Australian composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Matthew Kirkis, is a 6-piece, synth-fuelled ensemble that fuses electronica, jazz and RnB.
Since the 2012 release of the lo-fi Purplefruit For X-Ray Vision, Kirkis has received global radio play and praise from the likes of DJ Gilles Peterson.
Signed to UK indie label Eglo Records, founded by Alexander Nut & Floating Points, earlier this year they dropped their 7” Oh Serene/Zoltar and Wormjelly, two tracks extracted from the highly anticipated Liverbleach record.
SILENTJAY
SILENTJAY is a tireless and endlessly imaginative producer. Having studied Jazz Improvisation at the Victorian College of Arts, Alejandro Jay Abapo (JJ to his friends) turned his ear for music to production after his uncle, a DJ, gave him his record collection.
Alejandro brought his own sampler and combined his talents as a multi-instrumentalist alongside vibrant beats, his own and guest vocals and electronic loops. The result is so organic that each carefully crafted track seems to breathe on its own, a natural blend of shoegaze, soul and hip-hop.
SILENTJAY will be joined by Hiatus Kaiyote & Kirkis backing vocalist, Jace XL. This is sure to be a very special set at the Sonic Architect National Conference!
