MUSIC: HIPOLOGY IS? – “A montage of elements, events, music and fashion that make up an individuals personal interpretation of Hip Hop culture.” (BBE RECORDS)

Dropping soon on BBE Records HERE

Visioneers new album “Hipology” is due out soon and to remind you all just how good its going to be, here is something from the Visioneers vaults. If you would like to review the forthcoming album …. find out more here

Since the late 80s Londoner Marc Mac has been converting audiences with his sophisticated take on urban soul. A hybrid concoction of breakbeat, nu-jazz, neo soul, drum and bass, and Hip Hop, its a polished sound plugged directly into the emotional highway of 21st century city living. Working under a variety of guises, his prodigious output includes his work as one half of 4hero, Visioneers, Natures Plan and Nu Era. In the late 90‘s Marc signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talking Loud Records with 4hero. 4hero went on to produce two classic albums with Talkin Loud icluding the award winning “Two Pages” & “Creating Patterns” they then set up their own label where the critically acclaimed “Play With The Changes” was released. Somewhere in this timeline, between producing music for Jill Scott to Roy Ayers, Phonte to ! Terry C! allier, Marc started another project called Visioneers releasing a set of limited 7” singles getting the attention from top eclectic DJ’s including Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay. Visioneers was then picked up by BBE records who released the debut album “Dirty Old Hip Hop”.

While recording this new Visioneers record, Mac began thinking how hip-hop had been a (sometimes invisible) guiding hand in his life. “The music, the fashion and culture. Although producing all kinds of music from jungle to jazz, hip-hop (or at least what is was) has always been a part of what I do in some strange and sometimes very subtle way.” Documenting this influence on, his very own digital scrapbook (that has also spawned the record of the same title), it’s easy to see the depth of Mac’s appreciation of hip-hop. HIPOLOGY; the album includes hand picked guest John Robinson, Notes To Self, TRAC & Baron alongside some featured musicians Luke Parkhouse, Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra & The Support Horns. The result is a real cool, funky eclectic mix of breaks,! beats, soul/jazz and freaky squeaks a great follow up ! to the debut album.

“A collage or montage of elements, events, music and fashion that make up an individuals personal interpretation of Hip Hop culture.”

“They have a right to speak on it the way they see it coming up. Hip-hop is the voice of this generation. Even if you didn’t grow up in the Bronx in the ’70s, hip-hop is there for you.”
Kool Herc

Looking at your own reflection you may wonder… who are you?; Adidas sneakers, baseball caps, Timberland boots, Cazal style glasses, Varsity jackets, Nike tees & hoodies and then take a look through your DVD shelf, books or music collection… Coltrane, James Brown, Mary J Blige and even a Led Zeplin album. why?… well for me it all stems from growing up listening to hip-hop; that’s what we call Hipology.
maybe you grew up in Tokyo or London and listen to hip-hop or even New York or maybe Paris… everyone’s personal experiences and perception may be different and thats what we call Hipology. When these experiences are shared the picture of hip-hop culture becomes even bigger. Hipology.

While recording a new Visioneers record in 2011-2012 I started thinking about how much Hip Hop has played a under current role through my life. The Music, The Fashion and Culture. Although producing all kinds of music from Jungle to Jazz, Hip Hop (or at least what is was) has always been a part of what I do in some strange and sometimes very subtle way. So this kinda inspired me to start up this Website, it’s just like a little scrap book and a way for me to join some dots up, shout out some greats and try get the story straight. yeah so that’s it.

Antibalas on:

Daptone Co-owner, producer and former member, Gabriel Roth, on Antibalas: “Rhythm is what makes a good Afrobeat record. Not just the rhythm section, but the rhythm of the horns, the rhythm of the vocals, the rhythm of the keyboards, everybody’s rhythm. It’s not just about being right or wrong in your rhythm, or being good at it, but it’s about feeling something the same way, swinging the same way, anticipating things the same way, and hitting things the same way — everybody hearing music the same way, and being able to turn all those instruments into one voice. Antibalas is the only band that can do that, right now. That’s why they’re still at the front of the scene, after all these years.”

Rashida’s love for playing music that she loves is infectious.

So much so that that after Prince saw her spin records in 2004 at the House Of Blues in West Hollywood, Prince invited her to play for him. Fast forward to now, and Rashida‘s been travelling with him every since.

In 2010 she began touring with Kelis, travelling the world over as her DJ.

Currently in town as part of the travelling Prince party, she came into triple j to record her signature fusion of hip-hop, funk, soul, dancehall, pop, rock, and house live.

VIDEO: Bilal Speaks About Robert Glasper + Sydney Gig Info (Sun June 10)

Bilal describes his experience working with the Robert Glasper Experiment.

‘Black Radio’ the new album from Robert Glasper Experiment is in stores now:

Niche Productions presents Future Now feat. The Robert Glasper Experiment, Jose James & Taylor McFerrin

Sun 10th June (Queen’s Bday Weekend) – Oxford Art Factory – Sydney

Niche Productions presents a cross-genre, cross-generational bill for the June long weekend featuring the future of Jazz, Soul and Electronic music. Whilst all three artists have a deep affinity and spiritual association with Jazz, they all refuse to be pigeonholed and on Sunday 10th June, all preconceived notions about ‘what Jazz is and what Jazz isn’t’ are going to be blown out of the water.

The Robert Glasper Experiment makes its debut appearance in Australia off the back of their incredible new album Black Radio, which is out now on Blue Note (and debuted at #1 on the Australian iTunes Jazz Charts). Featuring a host of incredible guest vocalists and personnel, Black Radio is a concept that comes from Yassin Bey aka Mos Def (who contributes the album’s title track) who wonders why, if the Black Box is the only thing that survives a plane crash, do they not make the whole plane out of its material? Glasper himself is in a class of his own behind the keys and when joined by vocalists like Erykah Badu and Bilal as well as newcomers King and Chrisette Michelle, shines even brighter (if that’s possible). Nothing is predictable about a Robert Glasper Experiment performance and Australian audiences are about to get their very first taste. Watch a recent performance on David Letterman here

Jose James is equally hard to pinpoint, having released songs from the classic American songbook for Verve as well as fully-blown beat collaborations with Flying Lotus, Moodyman and Basement Jaxx. His debut album The Dreamer was a throwback to the classic-cool-quintet albums like Kind Of Blue and was followed quickly by Black Magic (both on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label), which featured the aforementioned heavyweight collabs, leaning more on a Marvin Gaye/Leon Ware I Want You modus operandi. His new album No Beginning, No End will be available in 2012 and promises his heaviest lineup of players yet (Richard Spaven, Pino Palladino, anyone?). Enjoy a taste of the first single Trouble here

Taylor McFerrin returns to Australia after appearing recently with Shabazz Palaces in select shows around Oz. The one-man band (and son of Bobby) combines an incredible beatbox vocal ability, range, production prowess and gift for electronics… the apple does not fall far from the tree. Signed to Brainfeeder, McFerrin’s debut album is in the works. On his own he is mind-blowing, when he collaborates with his two fellow artists he truly embodies the spirit of Jazz: to improvise, innovate and entertain. Watch and learn

Niche Productions could not be more proud to bring Sydney this ridiculously well-matched triple bill. A culmination of all of our influences on stage for one night only, Future Now is three artists who have consistently created some of the best moments of their genre and who have not even reached their peak. Join us for something truly special this June.

Niche Productions presents Future Now featuring Robert Glasper Experiment, Jose James & Taylor McFerrin + special guests DJs Cian (Conch Records – NZ) & Huwston
