NYC Disco legend John Morales, Sunday Afternoon DJ Set, Supported by Phil Toke, Gian Arpino, Alex Dimitriadis & Soul of Sydney DJ’s ( April 1st)

Soul Of Sydney and Our House Sydney are blessed to present one of the legends (not used lightly) of New York Disco and an early pioneer of dance music production, remixing and DJ‘ing – John Morales.

John has been involved in the creation of hit DISCO records for the better part of 30 years with over 500 songs on his own, and as part of John Morales & Sergio Munzibai (M & M Productions). Known in the industry as an innovator and chance taker, John has always welcomed the challenge of working with new artists and can lay claim to being one of the originators of the extended mix, remix and re-edit concept.

Having worked, remixed or edited everyone from Marvin Gaye, Inner Life, Jocelyn Brown, Fantastic Aleems, Teddy Pendergrass, Harold Melvin, Evelyn Thomas, Fantastic Aleems, Brass Construction, War, Candi Staton, Loletta Holloway, First Choice, Salsoul Orchestra & Double Exposure just to name a few, expect John to give a FUNK & DISCO lesson covering 30+ years of the sound that shaped music as we know it today.

Local supports include Gian Arpino, Phil Toke, Alex Dimitriades, Phil Hudson & Soul of Sydney DJ’s

Special limited $15 presale tickets are available via email from either soulofsydney@gmail.com or ourhouse_sydney@optusnet.com.au. Also check out www.soulofsydney.org/blockparty for more ticket info.

JOHN MORALES

In 1975 while working as a DJ in local Bronx club, John Morales realised that he wanted to lengthen the duration of some of his records. Back then the duration of most records was 3 to 4 minutes, so by using his TEAC 71/2 and a box of razor blades, John started splicing tape for endless hours and became one the first DJ’s to create the ‘extended mix’ (or ‘remix’ in it’s original form). In doing so, he realised that he could achieve a similar outcome by cutting, slicing and taping parts from different recordings. This formed the basis for his acclaimed (deadly) medleys. John says “I can still see the 100′s of edits zoom by every-time I play the tape”. John Morales started to release some of his reel to reel edits, medleys and remixes to Acetate via the Sunshine Sound (a NYC studio where DJ’s could bring their reel to reel tapes and have acetate copies cut one at a time), so that he could play these tracks at clubs. Greg Carmichael gave him his first mixing job after hearing some of his Sunshine Acetate mixes and these first two official mixes made him famous: ‘Dance and Shake Your Tambourine‘ by ‘The Universal Robot Band‘ and the classic ‘I’m Caught Up” by Inner Life. However some of his early mixes and edits, even those officially released, were and remain uncredited and so might not appear in his discography! John has worked for numerous acts and has been involved in the creation of over 500 songs – both on his own and as part of John Morales & Sergio Munzibai (M & M Productions). John Morales can lay claim to being one of the most important figures in the creation of the extended mix, remix and re-edit concept.

Oddisee // Katalyst // M-phazes AND Sydney’s very first beat battle competition – 1ST OF MARCH 2012 – CIVIC UNDERGROUND, SYDNEY!

“Few things in this world truly, really matter…The importance we place on most of the things in life is a social pressure that we put on,
that really is insignificant. When you realise that, the levels of stress just drop significantly”  – Oddisee

Over the past few years, DC has been churning out a collective of inspiring MC’s and producer’s who are united in mind, spirit, sound and message. They’re less about samples and more about emulating original  Go-Go sounds using real live instrumentation, with witty and insightful lyrics that reflect their own personal headspace and environment. Oddisee hails from this sound and is a part of this emerging wealth of creativity. Born in Washington D.C to a African American mother and a Sudanese father, creative pursuits and politics surrounded him from a young age through the family lineage of poets, musicians, and artists. He was taught to think, question and do as evidenced in the range of topics Oddisee discusses in his rhymes.

Being familiar with his music as a producer and MC, there was very little I knew about his personal insights into music, the world or his opinions about politics and humanity. If you are familiar with his lyrics, you would understand where the curiosity emanates from. The more interviews I had read from various e-zine publications, online blogs and various youtube clips, the more I discovered a free spirit, intelligent, insightful man who is not afraid of dissecting real issues.

A  Few points that might help you organise you day better;

  • It is a FAMILY FRIENDLY PICNIC first and foremost so might be a good idea really to pack for a Sunday Picnic in the park (eski/ picnic basket, fruit, drinks and something to sit on etc.)
  • We have a spot with a stack of grass around with plenty of room for kids, it is 5 mins from city around Alexandria, there is shade but best people bring some hats etc.
  • We will have a Sound System with selectors playing an eclectic mix of real music including everything from Sade to James Brown to De La Soul, Erykah Badu & Masters At Work, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles.
  • It is open decks with rotating DJ’s (but best people get in touch via soulofsydney@gmail.com if keen to play to confirm time slots)
  • We usually aim to get everything starting at about 12pm with ending time around depending on vibe.
  • We will be waiting for the weather forecast before we make the call as it is outdoors, if it does look like it’s going to rain then we will simply move till next sunny Sunday. (We will be in touch a few days out for the event via email & on the day via SMS in case we have to move the party, so we will need your Mobile details too so we can get location details quicker)
  • ARTIST CALL OUT: If you are a local Musician, MC, Singer, Percussionist or DJ then we are very keen to hear from you if you would like to play, especially if you down to play percussion along the Djs in an open jam vibe for Sunday. (we are hoping to get thing going as a regular Sunday afternoon local soul funk and hip hop open jam session so if your keen to be part of it let us know)
  • For local Soul music fan then we simply wants you there enjoying the music, so get a group of friends together, spread the word and come down for a day out it the park to some real music.

Thanks again for getting behind the idea kids.. Sydney definitely needs more people like YOU!

Pray for good weather & hope to see you all at the next one.

Peace,

Soul of Sydney and Co.
