ALTON MILLER
Growing up in the 1970s, Miller soaked up the musical environment surrounding him in the Motor City, taking a particular interest in the sounds of Motown, Philadelphia, Parliament-Funkadelic, and Santana. It was during the early ’80s once the “dance music crazed” Alton became friends with a young Derrick May that he decided to start spinning records, citing Chicago DJs such as Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles as prime influences. By the latter part of the same decade, Miller joined forces with George Baker and Chez Damier to start the Music Institute, a short-lived but legendary Detroit club that has since become near-mythical, thanks to the pioneering techno efforts of figures such as May. Following the demise of The Music Institute, Miller took an interest in Conga drumming in addition to DJing, which led to a period between 1989 and 1991 where he toured the world with his music. He then joined forces once again with May, first as an employee of the artist’s Transmat Records label, then as Aphrodisiac, the title under which he would begin releasing his music. Besides his EP on Transmat’s sublabel Fragile, he also released his music on Kevin Saunderson‘s KMS and a series of EPs on Serious Grooves. By the mid to late ’90s, he had increased his presence in the Detroit area through a number of DJ performances and a stream of stunning twelves. His latest album ‘Light Years Away’ had been critically acclamied by the likes of Osunlade, Atjazz and Boddhi Satva

Rebuilding Lives: Announcing the soulful ‘Disaster Relief’ show in Sydney

The heavy aftermath from the recent Cyclone Yasi and the Queensland and Victorian floods has been catastrophic; a multitude of lives have been lost and many years of development has been washed away within a matter of days – homes and towns completely destroyed.

However, the notions of ‘hope’ and ‘community’ coexists through this calamity; which has brought the nation together and has touched the hearts of neighbouring nations throughout the world. Thus it is through this calamity that ordinary people have come together to perform extraordinary things.

Consequently, Australian soul/urban music pioneers Jess Harlen (Melbourne) and Alphamama aka Anita Meiruntu & her band The Love Drug (Sydney) have soulfully set up a ‘Disaster Relief’ show in Sydney; to help rebuild the lives and essentially restoring souls, of our brothers and sisters in Victoria and Queensland.

There will be live music by the above artists plus more to be announced. There will also be prizes up for grabs, $4 Happy Hour drinks until 8pm and much more!

Please show your support and come along to this epic soulful Disaster Relief on Wednesday 30 March. All proceeds from the night will be donated to Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery.

R.I.P Loleatta Holloway! You were and always will be one of the true voices of DISCO, SOUL, FUNK & HOUSE. Thank you for the musical memories!

Loleatta Holloway Dies At Age 64

By Paul Cashmere
59 minutes ago (Tue, 22 Mar 2011 18:02:11 +1100)

Disco star Loleatta Hollaway, best known for the 1980 disco song ‘Love Sensation’ and the voice on hits by Blackbox and Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, has died from heart failure at the age of 64.

Loleatta started out singing in her mother’s choir, the Holloway Community Singers, before recording her first single in 1971. At the end of the decade she sang backing vocals on Dan Hartman’s ‘Re-Light My Fire’ who then wrote and produced what became her greatest hit ‘Love Sensation’.

‘Love Sensation’ was reinvented a decade later when Blackbox sampled her vocal on ‘Right On Time’. Loleatta was also the voice of the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch hit ‘Good Vibrations’ in 1991.

In more recent years Loleatta recorded a cover of Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’ for the Madonna tribute album ‘Virgin Voices’. She was also sampled on the Whitey Houston 2009 recording of ‘Million Dollar Bill’.

And some of the musical memories she has left us;
