Disco/Nu-Disco: S.W.A.T (Soul With A Twist) presents: Flatwound- Tickle Me Disco 12", includes remixes by Jamie Lloyd, Tal M Klein, Diesler

[tweetmeme source=”soulofsydney” only_single=false]Sydney music collective and party posse S.W.A.T (Soul With A Twist) are set to launch their highly anticipated debut 12″(yes, a vinyl record) and Digi release ‘Tickle Me Disco‘ by local Disco outfit Flatwound.

Mighty remixes by local and International King Pins Jamie Lloyd (Future Classic), Tal M Klein (Aniligital) and Diesler (Tru Thoughts), which are set on a course for dance floor destruction.

Fresh from blasting the Hills at Peats Ridge Festival over the New Years period, Jack Prest and Chris Soulos bring us the raw, sweaty disco outfit that is Flatwound. With a funk inspired disco sound that straddles the divide between “George Duke and Daft Punk”. The pair proudly occupy the murky waters where funk, disco and house merge, bringing heat in the form of spacey, French house sounds, slamming 80’s boogie and disco funk, all informed by their Hip-Hop and Latin Jazz roots.

With spots at Playground Weekender Festival 2010, plus a release tour encompassing Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. 2010 looks set to be a big year for this act with the full album release to follow shortly.

For more details on tour dates/venues and to get a sample of the Flatwound sound and other upcoming S.W.A.T releases log onto:

Dust off the platform heels, break out the purple leather overcoat, slide into the denim superflares, drape yourself in rolled gold and stroll down to the sleaziest soulsonic shakedown this side of Harlem circa 1973, ‘cos the huge hit of the BECK’S FESTIVAL BAR 2008 returns to The Basement for one show only on July 16th 2010.

We’re talking tracks from films like Superfly, Shaft, 110th Street, Troubleman, The Mack, Black Caesar, Slaughter’s Big Rip Off and Cleopatra Jones, as recorded originally by soul greats Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Isaac Hayes and Willie Hutch. These cult classic Blaxploitation movies from the early-mid 1970’s spawned some of the greatest soul and funk tracks ever released, from moody, atmospheric background music like Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man Soundtrack to the plaintive ghetto dramas of Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly or the electrifying excitement of Isaac Hayes’s Shaft.

Now it’s time to recreate and revitalise an amazing selection of these Blaxploitation soundtrack soul classics LIVE at the Basement on Friday July 16, while screening classic and rare footage from the original movies.

With an expanded 12-piece Booty Affair “Pimpestra” (short for Pimp Orchestra), the sweet sweetback sounds of the baaaaaaddest movies ever made are coming to downtown Sydney! Featuring Australia’s very own Mack: the pimp rolling, street working, high risk player Professor Groove, and a raft of special guests, including the sweet soul tones of Juanita Tippins (Confection, Jimmy Barnes), the Marvin-like smoky voice of Jonah Lataukefu (Katie Noonan, Suite Az), The Crackhouse Horns (a 3 piece horn section featuring the Weird Assembly’s Dave Weir),  and of course the A Team of Professor Groove’s regular funk crew, players like Josh Beagley (guitar), Terepai Richmond (drums) and Alex Hewetson (bass), the Pimpestra is ready to recreate the hustle and bustle and pure uncut funk sound of wah wah guitars, wobbling synthesisers and those world famous urban breakbeats.

DJ Stephen Ferris from FBI Radio’s  Funk Flashback will be on hand to drop some crackling old vinyl onto the decks, and the dirty funk will continue late into the night with Professor Groove and The Booty Affair conducting the after party.
