It’s well known that throughout the 20th century, fed up with poor working conditions and racism in their home country, many American jazz musicians chose to leave the US in order to live and work in Europe. What’s less well known is how their music developed and evolved during their time on the continent, and how the experience of being a musician in Europe was to shape their respective lives.

Over the years countless jazz concerts, festivals and recordings featuring American jazz musicians have taken place all over Europe, yet it’s remarkable how few of these musical artifacts have been evaluated by the jazz community. We seek to assess the European experiences of the American jazzmen, with a specific focus on the progressive sounds of modal jazz and the avant garde. We examine the recordings made by those who crossed the Atlantic just to take in a short tour, as well as those who made more frequent trips, and of course those for whom Europe ultimately became their permanent place of residence.

Radical new jazz sounds created as renowned ex-pat American jazzmen mingled with the creme de la creme of their European counterparts. Early developments in world music inspired by trans-global cultural excursions to Asia, Africa and beyond. Exchanges of ideas and a cultural meeting of minds as revolutionary jazz festivals took place behind the Iron Curtain. Advances in rhythm and sound where modal jazz and the prophetic music of John Coltrane merged with European folk traditions. This is Spiritual Jazz – as played by Americans in Europe.

AUDIO: BOOTLEG ALBUM: Max Tannone – Mic Check 1234! (HIP HOP / PUNK )

AUDIO: BOOTLEGS: Max Tannone Mic Check 1234! | HIP HOP VS PUNK BOOTLEGS!

Mic Check 1234! is a remix album consisting of rap and punk music. Despite their initial musical differences, the two genres also share many traits. Great rap and great punk both make you want to affect change, to rebel against the status quo, or to simply just get up and move. The music often stemmed from a place of social and economic inequality while exhibiting a fierce do-it-yourself attitude in the process; inspiring kids all over the world to strap on guitars, scream into microphones, ruin turntables, and mash drum machines. My aim was to take my favorite emcees’ more socio-political material and pair it with some of the best punk bands ever. This is the result. Download the full project at http://miccheck1234.com

Release date: Jun 12, 2012

ABOUT

Diversity is a template for success for any artist, Sydney based music producer Pedram Rouzbehani known to his fans as “P.R” crafted his art around diversity drawn from life experiences & cultural upbringing.

Dubbed as a 4D producer, he exhibits the importance of not being 1 dimensional when it comes to creating his art. Despite becoming increasingly popular within the Hip Hop and R&B scene, P.R has expanded his horizons by creating Jazz, Soul, and House music.

His inspiration is drawn from his life and observing the world around him, which has created his passion to create positive music with good vibes or what he refers to it as “feel good music”. He loves to experiment with different moods of music by fusing multiple genres of current and past music.

He is influenced by Life, Sound, Film and Music (from Hip Hop to Classical). The main influences in his production style have been the great works of DJ Premier, Nujabes, 9th Wonder, Kanye West, J Dilla, Just Blaze, Hi-Tek, Statik Selektah, Alchemist & Timbaland.

In 2006 he committed himself to focusing on producing music seriously, whilst studying at university to complete his bachelor of Electronic Arts. His rentless drive started paying off as he was starting to get more attention and started to establish himself as a serious producer.

In January 2010, he released his debut mixtape “Pre-Heated” which was hosted by world famous DJ/Producer “Statik Selektah”. The mixtape featured artists from around the world such as Naledge (from Kidz in the Hall), Chaundon, Mystro, Carla Waye, 13th Son & many others. The mixtape achived great accomplishment clocking over 15,000 downloads, as well as being featured on 100+ websites, magazine articles and frequent radio air time.

In April 2010, he received a bachelor degree after completing a 4 year course in Electronic Arts, which he had studied Digital Music as one of his main subjects.

In May 2011, he released an e.p titled “Bridging The Gap” with New York legend “Ali Vegas”, with his music partner “The Iron Ghost”, under their music production duo called “Sound Kamp”.

He is currently working on many projects, including a solo e.p titled “Introspection”, plus producing for many other artists on many projects. To date, P.R has worked with a bunch of artists from all around the globe in Australia, Asia, Europe and America.

He plans to travel around Asia in 2012 to expand his music into the Asian market and work with Asian artists and labels, as well as follow in the footsteps of one of his biggest musical influences “Nujabes”, by taking on the hip-hop with jazz fused genre and getting recognized in the Japanese Music Scene.

His love for music & the cultures, as well as the joy and thrill of making music and experiencing other artists embrace and use it, are what drives him to continuously create and produce.

Havana Candy – The Black Keys EP

1. All Night
2. Tera
3. Last Train
4. Tera (Flash Atkins Mix)

Havana Candy is Joe Lucas who lives in Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire and is part of a growing collective of artists that includes Flash Atkins and Jamie L.

He has had releases under various guises over the years on labels that include 20:20 Vision and Fat City and more recently on his own Havana Candy Records; next up is Tusk Wax Records. His sound is deep and hypnotic with an analogue sensibility that mixes up balearic, disco and house as the three original tracks here demonstrate.

All Night builds round an elastic bass and skipping drums before bringing in the Havana Candy trademark filtered synths. It stays deep and swinging, working the groove with drops and fills that provide an ever changing dynamic.

Next up, Tera is on the one and builds a groove around analogue riffs, distorted guitars and stabs perfect for those early hours dance floors.

Last Train is deep balearica with vintage synths leading the way. It’s slow, melancholy and electronic, showing off Havana Candy’s skill at making timeless dance music that mixes up different influences to create something original.

Finally, Flash Atkins steps up to remix Tera with some old school acid. Using a 909 kit and 808 line, it builds to a break when the Rhodes is introduced. It’s a dance floor bubbler that will keep heads nodding and feet moving.

EARLY REACTIONS

James Holroyd – Nice carp. Last train is superb.

Billy Scurry – Wow, this grabbed me from the off, lovin that groove on All Night. Very infectious, top support

Dicky Trisco – All Night is the one for me. Wicked night time boogie sounds.

Scope – both mixes of Tera are hot!

Severino Panzetta – Flash Atkins in BIG form at the mo
