It’s well known that throughout the 20th century, fed up with poor working conditions and racism in their home country, many American jazz musicians chose to leave the US in order to live and work in Europe. What’s less well known is how their music developed and evolved during their time on the continent, and how the experience of being a musician in Europe was to shape their respective lives.

Over the years countless jazz concerts, festivals and recordings featuring American jazz musicians have taken place all over Europe, yet it’s remarkable how few of these musical artifacts have been evaluated by the jazz community. We seek to assess the European experiences of the American jazzmen, with a specific focus on the progressive sounds of modal jazz and the avant garde. We examine the recordings made by those who crossed the Atlantic just to take in a short tour, as well as those who made more frequent trips, and of course those for whom Europe ultimately became their permanent place of residence.

We examine the recordings made by those who crossed the Atlantic just to take in a short tour, as well as those who made more frequent trips, and of course those for whom Europe ultimately became their permanent place of residence.

Radical new jazz sounds created as renowned ex-pat American jazzmen mingled with the creme de la creme of their European counterparts. Early developments in world music inspired by trans-global cultural excursions to Asia, Africa and beyond. Exchanges of ideas and a cultural meeting of minds as revolutionary jazz festivals took place behind the Iron Curtain. Advances in rhythm and sound where modal jazz and the prophetic music of John Coltrane merged with European folk traditions. This is Spiritual Jazz – as played by Americans in Europe.

SYDNEY SOULFUL HOUSE POWERHOUSE RANDOM SOUL RELEASE LIVE FOR THE MOMENT ALBUM

‘Live For The Moment’ is the debut album from Random Soul, the Australian house duo of Yogi & Husky. The duo have made a big impression in recent years with releases for labels including Strictly Rhythm, Bargrooves, Salted and Large. The album, released on their own label, Random Soul Recordings, presents an effortless journey through 15 tracks that cement their position amongst the most established names in Deep and Soulful House circles, while also showcasing their talent in creating Soul, Jazz and Funk gems.

‘Live For The Moment’ incorporates everything from floating vocals and laid-back soulful grooves riddled with live instrumentation, through to bumping, funky club tracks. The album also highlights their talent as songwriters with a string of captivating vocals featuring strong hooks, often performed by Yogi. Six vocal collaborators include well-known West Coast USA artists Chuck Love and Joshua Heath, as well as Natalie Conway, Kristen Pearson, Kyla Sexton and Louis Hale. All are close friends of Yogi & Husky, and the chemistry of the relationships shines through: “Working with friends always makes the job seem more fun too, so doing tracks with people like Joshua Heath and Chuck Love, usually meant more jokes and laughing than ‘work’ per say. We enjoy getting other people in the studio as it creates such a different dynamic”

Listening to these collaborations and the album in full, it’s clear to hear where many of Random Soul’s influences lie, with the house sounds of Miguel Migs, Joey Negro, Grant Nelson and Groove Armada providing a strong focus, alongside funk and soul artists such as Rae & Christian and Smoove & Turrell.

Since 2005, Sydney-based Yogi & Husky have become two of the city’s most well known DJ/Producer exports. Combining their production skills, varied musical talents and their mutual love of Soul, Jazz, Funk, Motown, Disco and everything in-between, they have brought the Random Soul sound alive in clubs, bars and festivals around the world, and delivered hit after hit in house music circles. Their distinct studio sound is typified by Yogi’s keyboards and vocals, and Husky’s jumping bass-lines and driving drums – a sound that has given them a worldwide following and seen them command on-going positions at the top of download store sales charts, while picking up countless licenses of their music to international compilation series’.

The first single taken from the album is ‘Mysterious’ and will feature a Richard Earnshaw remix to be released late January February 2013.

Niche Productions presents a cross-genre, cross-generational bill for the June long weekend featuring the future of Jazz, Soul and Electronic music. Whilst all three artists have a deep affinity and spiritual association with Jazz, they all refuse to be pigeonholed and on Sunday 10th June, all preconceived notions about ‘what Jazz is and what Jazz isnt’ are going to be blown out of the water.

Direct from the Melbourne International Jazz Festival:
‘FUTURE NOW’
Feat. The Robert Glasper Experiment, Jose James & Taylor Mcferrin

Sun 10th June (Queens Bday Weekend) Oxford Art Factory, Sydney

The Robert Glasper Experiment makes its debut appearance in Australia off the back of their incredible new album Black Radio, which is out now on Blue Note (and debuted at #1 on the Australian iTunes Jazz Charts). Featuring a host of incredible guest vocalists and personnel, Black Radio is a concept that comes from Yassin Bey aka Mos Def (who contributes the albums title track) who wonders why, if the Black Box is the only thing that survives a plane crash, do they not make the whole plane out of its material? Glasper himself is in a class of his own behind the keys and when joined by vocalists like Erykah Badu and Bilal as well as newcomers King and Chrisette Michelle, shines even brighter (if thats possible). Nothing is predictable about a Robert Glasper Experiment performance and Australian audiences are about to get their very first taste. Watch a recent performance on David Letterman here.

Jose James is equally hard to pinpoint, having released songs from the classic American songbook for Verve as well as fully-blown beat collaborations with Flying Lotus, Moodyman and Basement Jaxx. His debut album The Dreamer was a throwback to the classic-cool-quintet albums like Kind Of Blue and was followed quickly by Black Magic (both on Gilles Petersons Brownswood label), which featured the aforementioned heavyweight collabs, leaning more on a Marvin Gaye/Leon Ware I Want You modus operandi. His new album No Beginning, No End will be available in 2012 and promises his heaviest lineup of players yet (Richard Spaven, Pino Palladino, anyone?). Enjoy a taste of the first single Trouble here.

Taylor Mcferrin returns to Australia after appearing recently with Shabazz Palaces in select shows around Oz. The one-man band (and son of Bobby) combines an incredible beatbox vocal ability, range, production prowess and gift for electronics the apple does not fall far from the tree. Signed to Brainfeeder, Mcferrins debut album is in the works. On his own he is mind-blowing, when he collaborates with his two fellow artists he truly embodies the spirit of Jazz: to improvise, innovate and entertain. Watch and learn.

Niche Productions could not be more proud to bring Sydney this ridiculously well-matched triple bill. A culmination of all of our influences on stage for one night only, Future Now is three artists who have consistently created some of the best moments of their genre and who have not even reached their peak. Join us for something truly special this June.

DJ Maestro (Blue Note:Trip and Verve: Delicious Jazz) @ Bar 100, (Sydney Festival First Night Jan 7)

Special Guest DJ Maestro,

Sydney Festival First Night (Jan 7)

Bar 100

January 7, 2012

DJ Maestro (Blue Note:Trip and Verve: Delicious Jazz)

His music attracts many dance lovers globally. His amazing mix of modern and vintage dance floor inspired Jazz has made him a Sydney favourite whenever he is in town. Funk, jazz, latin: the DJ seems to have been raised on soul food and hot peppers, but actually comes from a family where everybody listened to classical music in appropriate silence and played the piano and the cello considerably well.

With his own record label (Dig This!), being Program Director of the IJazz Amsterdam festival, booker for the new Amsterdam club “Jazz on the Riverbank” and founder of the Dutch station Radio Jazz, Maestro has a big hold on everything that has to do with funk, Latin and jazz in the Netherlands.

DJ Maestro Spiring Dance Floor Jazz, Latin & Funk Podcast:

About Bar 100

Links: (Web, Twitter, Youtube, Facebook)

‘Historic stained-glass windows, a 150-year-old streetscape, First Fleet seaman and the world’s first strike for an eight-hour day all have ties to one of the most distinguished heritage buildings in The Rocks – the former Mariners’ Church at 100 George Street.

The building sits above one of the most historic sites in Australia, believed to be where the First Fleet arrivals stepped ashore in 1788.

From 1856 to 1859, the Mariners’ Church was built at the site by the Bethel Seaman’s Union. Founded in England and later established in Sydney, the Union was born from the widespread evangelical religious revival of the early 19th century, which included missionary activity among seaman.

Now in its present day, 100 George Street has come alive once again.

Home to four chic bars, indoor and outdoor dining, lounge spaces, as well an exquisite VIP area, the beautiful options of BAR100 need to experienced to be believed.

Spanning three levels of stunningly re-worked heritage space, BAR100 is an inspiring fusion of old and new and magnificent day or night.

With amazing food and drinks, jaw-dropping surrounds and iconic views, this incredible new venue embodies the very best of the harbour-side city.

About DJ Maestro:

There is a doll in the Amsterdam apartment of Martijn Barkhuis: it’s a DJ Maestro Action Figure. The box proudly mentions: ‘It really DJ’s, drinks and smokes!’ “That’s slightly exaggerated,” the real-life version says with a husky voice, while putting his Davidoff cigarette in the ashtray to fill our glasses with pinot grigio. “That doll doesn’t DJ at all.” At least, not like the human version of DJ Maestro, as many, many international dance full of sweaty and cramped calves can attest to. Mesmerize, DJ Maestro’s debut album, following the compilations he did for legendary jazz labels Blue Note (Blue Note Trip, three editions) and Verve (Delicious Jazz), is made for exactly those dance floors. “The music was inspired by the records I play and by the reactions of people who dance to those records. Some of the songs on Mesmerize are more than a year old, others I wrote only two months ago. But they have all been tested on the dance floor. When something didn’t work, we improved it.”

‘We’, in this case, are Maestro and producers Mark van de Bergh and Maarten Helsloot, aka JAAN and Marty Belmondo. They are the owners of a studio in the mundane outskirts of Amsterdam, are blessed with a good ear and the ability to transform Maestro’s ideas into beats, grooves and bass lines. “Sometimes, I hummed them a song, or described a certain feeling or vibe. I put dozens of my favourite songs on mini disc for Mark and Maarten, so they would understand what I was looking for.”

Mesmerize was born out of pure necessity. While the record collection stacked behind him almost crumbles under its weight, the DJ explains: “It’s getting harder and harder to find records I want to play. They often lack a certain atmosphere or groove. So when I was given the opportunity to record my own album, I took it with both hands.” We will get back to the hands in a second.

His record deal enabled Maestro to work with a bunch of talented musicians he often performs with: renowned saxophone player Benjamin Herman, flute player Magnus Lindgren (who also worked with Koop), Zuco 103-singer Lilian Vieira, Carl Young (bass player in Michael Franti’s Spearhead), keyboard player Sven Figee (with whom Maestro co-wrote two songs), soul singer Forrest (known for his hit ‘Rock the Boat’) and saxophone player Tineke Postma. “In general, we invited them to the studio once we finished the basis. All we told them was to do whatever they’re good at. Benjamin Herman did his thing in just half an hour.” As a result, the lazy track ‘Spring Street’ has a real ‘neon light in a wet street’ vibe, while the sax in the spicy latin song ‘En Orbita’ is like an exquisite sauce poured over the groove.

Funk, jazz, latin: the DJ seems to have been raised on soul food and hot peppers, but actually comes from a family where everybody listened to classical music in appropriate silence and played the piano and the cello considerably well. Maestro himself played the violin “quite well”, but he feels that “if somebody else is more talented, you should let that person play for you.” But clapping his hands is certainly not a problem for the DJ: just listen to ‘Rainy Day’.

As a teenager, Maestro was mesmerized by the turntables, mixers, headphones and vinyl albums of his friends, who took their drive-in show to hockey parties and school parties. It left him with an insatiable hunger for albums, and an incredible disgust for dance classics: “One of the highlights in my career was the moment somebody requested ‘Relight My Fire’ for the umpteenth time. ‘I’ve got that one,’ I said, pulled the record from my bag and broke it in two right before his very eyes.”

That doesn’t mean the DJ doesn’t know how to please the crowd: his Blue Note Trip-nights in clubs, nationwide attract many dance lovers, who love to work up a sweat on the amazing mix of modern and vintage from the Maestro’s record cases, which he carries with him to Indonesia, Japan, New York and most European countries.

With his own record label (Dig This!), being programdirector of the IJazz Amsterdam festival, booker for the new Amsterdam club “Jazz on the Riverbank” and founder of the dutch station Radio Jazz, Maestro has a big hold on everything that has to do with funk, latin and jazz in the Netherlands. “It’s killing sometimes, all those long nights with too much cigarettes and drinks,” he tries to put his fabulous life somewhat into perspective. But isn’t that a very big grin we see on the face of the DJ Maestro Action Figure?

ELECTRIC WIRE HUSTLE ARE IN SYDNEY!!

I was introduced to ELECTRIC WIRE HUSTLE at the beginning of this year by a close mate of mine who had been the lead singer’s room mate back in Christchurch. I have been mesmerized by their sound ever since. How do you encapsulate in words EWH’s sound without sticky taping labels that don’t seem to have a firm hold on them? Their sound can be best described as psychedelic, off beat hip hop with soul as the epicenter of their muse, splash a bit of jazz and contemporary electronica, and you have a sound that cannot be contained. It needs to be heard. They seem to inherently resist labels not from their own doing, but it’s like a sin trying to pigeon hole this band. It’s just wrong! They don’t care to fit a mould, or to stick to a typical formulaic generic sound of beats and samples. It’s the finer details that seem to make more noise than the framework itself. They stand out because they take risks, they experiment with sounds, instrumentation, tempo, mood, and dive deep in the multi layers of musical freedom. Plus, they know to loiter in the moment, for us to wait it out and journey with them through the raw landscape of dreamy sounds. EWH take their time and sit with you.

Electric Wire Hustle hail from Wellington, New Zealand, a three piece band – Mara (vocals/bass/guitar), Taay Ninh (bass/keyboards/MPC) and Myele Manzanza (drums/percussion), signed to the label BBE and WONDERFUL NOISE (Jpn). 2007 saw the band unite for the first time playing shows around New Zealand with a large following that soon built momentum around their native land. Their strong stage presence and unique sound traveled across the seas affording them the privilege of support act for international artists the likes of UK’s soul singer Alice Russell, America’s left field hip hop outfit SA-RA Creative Partners, Japan’s DJ Krush and Grooveman Spot, Talib Kweli, Peanut Butterwolf, Jean Grae and DAM FUNK. Electric Wire Hustle have also had the remarkable privilege of collaborating with well respected musicians from Georgia Ann Muldrow, Declaime, Stacy Epps and Steve Spacek, with a special guest appearance by MARA TK’s father  - New Zealand’s blues luminary BILLY TK. Keep in mind they have still yet to take the world by storm. Not bad for three years of musical development!

Revered by Gilles Peterson, BBC’s Radio 1Xtra DJ Benj B, LA’s DJ JAMAD, NY’s Tyler Askew, it’s no wonder the well respected Revivalist blog has also taken to their sound with pure curiosity and open arms at the prestigious College Music Journal Festival (CMJ). Surrounding themselves with talented hip hop and jazz musicians in New York City for CMJ festival, EWH performed to an audience that were hard to impress due to the amount of new music the festival had hosted all day and night. EWH appeared on stage positively cementing their position amongst New York’s music hungry elitist crowd. They released this album in New Zealand at the tail end of 2009 through their own label Every Waking Hour, only to then get signed to BBE (worldwide) and Wonderful Noise (Japan). “Perception” was the first single to be released in New Zealand receiving critical acclaim world wide:

““Electric Wire Hustle are at the forefront of talented musicians dedicated to putting out superior music and it’s a damn shame that the airwaves aren’t flooded with what this album offers, because it would well be worth it.”

“A great blend of forward thinking hip hop, jazz and soul.”

Waajeed (Platinum Pied Pipers, Bling47, Ubiquity)

Niche Productions have hit the nail on the head again touring EWH down to Melbourne and Sydney for their long awaited album launch of the same name ‘Electric Wire Hustle’! EWH are to hit Sydney tomorrow night at TONE, Surry Hills.  You’ll find collaborations from the above mentioned, plus an interesting scope into what the future of soul music is developing into. This album holds hands with time and simplicity, layering smooth vocal tones provided by Mara TK, allowing the energy to shape the mood without rushing into a middle eight, or bridge to capture one’s attention. It’s live instrumentation so you know you’ll be in for a real treat to genuine musicianship! To me, DAM FUNK and ELECTRIC WIRE HUSTLE are two major players in the music industry that will (f not already) take the underground world by storm through strength in simplicity and sound escapism. Get to know Electric Wire Hustle, they’re staying. They’re staying for good!

Tickets available through moshtix or at the door! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!! DJ Huwston from 2ser’s SOUL GLOW will be DJing on the night! No doubt you’ll be hearing something new, perhaps a new Jay Electronica track in celebration of being signed to Rocnation! That’s another blog there…

Dust off the platform heels, break out the purple leather overcoat, slide into the denim superflares, drape yourself in rolled gold and stroll down to the sleaziest soulsonic shakedown this side of Harlem circa 1973, ‘cos the huge hit of the BECK’S FESTIVAL BAR 2008 returns to The Basement for one show only on July 16th 2010.

We’re talking tracks from films like Superfly, Shaft, 110th Street, Troubleman, The Mack, Black Caesar, Slaughter’s Big Rip Off and Cleopatra Jones, as recorded originally by soul greats Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Isaac Hayes and Willie Hutch. These cult classic Blaxploitation movies from the early-mid 1970’s spawned some of the greatest soul and funk tracks ever released, from moody, atmospheric background music like Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man Soundtrack to the plaintive ghetto dramas of Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly or the electrifying excitement of Isaac Hayes’s Shaft.

Now it’s time to recreate and revitalise an amazing selection of these Blaxploitation soundtrack soul classics LIVE at the Basement on Friday July 16, while screening classic and rare footage from the original movies.

With an expanded 12-piece Booty Affair “Pimpestra” (short for Pimp Orchestra), the sweet sweetback sounds of the baaaaaaddest movies ever made are coming to downtown Sydney! Featuring Australia’s very own Mack: the pimp rolling, street working, high risk player Professor Groove, and a raft of special guests, including the sweet soul tones of Juanita Tippins (Confection, Jimmy Barnes), the Marvin-like smoky voice of Jonah Lataukefu (Katie Noonan, Suite Az), The Crackhouse Horns (a 3 piece horn section featuring the Weird Assembly’s Dave Weir),  and of course the A Team of Professor Groove’s regular funk crew, players like Josh Beagley (guitar), Terepai Richmond (drums) and Alex Hewetson (bass), the Pimpestra is ready to recreate the hustle and bustle and pure uncut funk sound of wah wah guitars, wobbling synthesisers and those world famous urban breakbeats.

DJ Stephen Ferris from FBI Radio’s  Funk Flashback will be on hand to drop some crackling old vinyl onto the decks, and the dirty funk will continue late into the night with Professor Groove and The Booty Affair conducting the after party.

Sloppy Seconds is…

A re-edit label (Sloppy Seconds – get it?).  You can find me digitally on Juno for now.  I do have plans to press up vinyl sometime in the near future.  The material that I plan on using for the vinyl releases will be titles exclusive to the wax catalog (I have a secret stash saved specifically for this purpose).  I’ll let you all know when that happens.

A music resource website.  I’ve been collecting vinyl since the early/mid 80s and have amassed quite an amount of relatively obscure stuff and started the blog as a way to promote lesser known artists and their releases.  Because of the controversy surrounding mp3s I had originally intended to only post titles that are out of print, but I also realized that there are tons of new releases that are equally as amazing that weren’t being promoted very well.  The music selection there varies greatly and includes just about anything that moves me and/or  makes me laugh.  Here’s the addy.  Make yourselves at home.  Beer is in the fridge.

http://kennyconga.blogspot.com/

(For the record, I have received numerous emails stating that purchases of posted material were made due to promotion of said titles from the blog.)

And a DJ.  I’ve been DJing for quite some time now.  Most of you have never heard of me, which might have something to do with the severe lack of self promotion over the years – I never liked that part of the job, but I’ve come to the conclusion that the self promotion game needed to be stepped up if I wanted to continue to do this.

(Sloppy Seconds promo #4)

In order to make this post as short as possible the track listing will be available in the comments section.
