Named by LIFE Magazine as one of the most important Americans of the 20th Century, DJ AFRIKA BAMBAATAA is a musical visionary, DJ extraordinaire, living legend and founder of the Universal Zulu Nation – a collective of socially and politically aware emcees, DJs, graffiti artists and break dancers. With over 35 years trailblazin’ around the world, Bam, as he’s affectionately known, can almost single-handedly be credited for the urban music revolution – redefining music and culture as we know it today. In fact, Bam is the person responsible for coining the term “Hip Hop” in reference to this global movement.

The man behind Hip Hop/Electro Funk classic ‘Planet Rock’ over the years has co-produced and performed with the likes of James Brown, George Clinton, UB40, Fort Knox Five, Leftfield, Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest among many others.

Bam’s futuristic soundscapes became a major influence in the development of not only hip-hop, but have also been instrumental in laying the foundation for Breaks, Electro, Freestyle, Techno and House music. “Planet Rock” has become arguably the most sampled song in music history, having been remixed and sampled by the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Westbam, George Acosta, LL Cool J, Mariah Carey and countless others. Rap/Metal band Rage Against The Machine also famously covered Bam’s track ‘Renegades of Funk’.

Still extremely active, Bam continues to record, tour and educate, maintaining his status as a living legend and forefather of the art. In 2006, Bam was honored for his incredible achievements by American music channel VH1 at the annual ‘Hip Hip Honors’ show and in 2007; he was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, Bam accepted an appointment as visiting scholar at Cornell University where he speaks to classes, meets with students, community groups and performs the music he helped create and expand.

This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to sample what a New York City Block Party is all about, live and direct from the Boogie Down Bronx! Be immersed in the knowledge of a master, icon and living treasure that is DJ AFRIKA BAMBAATAA.

BEHIND THE FRONT | RED BULL AND FLYING STEPS UNITE BREAKDANCE WITH BACH

B-Boy KC-1

When most people think of Red Bull, they think of the energy drink and it’s affiliation with motor sports, just as when they think of classical music the notion of upper class people who don’t know how to let loose and a musical style with centuries of history comes to mind. In comparison, to people outside the hip hop realm, the street style dance of breakdancing often conjures up thoughts of hoodlums on the street. Here to turn all the stereotypes and pre-conceived thoughts on its head faster than a b-boy can defy gravity spinning on his; is the Red Bull Flying Bach show.  The one of a kind show that unites the vastly removed worlds of classical – in this case the elegant music of Johan Sebastian Bach – and hip hop – through the energetic dance of German breakdance crew Flying Steps – is touring Australia this month, with shows last week in Sydney, followed by Melbourne this week.

HIP HOP: Apollo Brown (DETROIT), David Dallas (NZ), P-Money (NZ), Suff Daddy (GER), Chasm(AUS), and more….

The time has come for the world of Hip Hop to unite under one roof. No, this isn’t a special United Nations charitable benefit, but more a United Nations of Benetton Hip Hop show in Sydney! Sydney label Grindin’ has once again stepped up to the plate providing Sydney with QUALITY Hip Hop acts. If you’re not familiar with Detroit’s APOLLO BROWN, keep busy and check the links out. All artists on the bill have a heavy jazz and soul influence so expect a unique sound heard on the night. The sound of boom-bap is heading to Sydney on the 30th of November @ The Civic Hotel!

APOLLO BROWN (DETROIT/MELLO MUSIC GROUP)

Apollo Brown is not your typical soul funk influenced producer. Growing up listening to soft rock music from the 60′s and 70′s such as Seals and Croft, Journey and The Carpenters, Apollo Brown has kept his influences broad and independently his own, not what his peers were commonly influenced by.  Apollo is best known as the go to producer in the Motor City Hip Hop circuit and has collaborated with artists such as Danny Brown, Oddisee, Diamond District, Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother, Black Milk, MED, Grap Luva, Kenn Starr, Finale, Magestik Legend, Paradime, and many more.
Having signed to Mello Music Group his album projects include “The Reset”, a series of reworked tracks in true remix tradition, “The Brown Study” as half of a collective with Boog Brown, and the “Gas Mask” LP as one-third of The Left with DJ Soko and Emcee Journalist 103. An LP which garnered respect from Hip Hop legends such as DJ Premier, who named it in his top albums of 2010 list.
In 2011, Apollo started a highly anticipated year off with the instrumental album “Clouds”, that was a being named to several relevant top 10 lists for the year and another collabo album called “Daily Bread” with New York emcee Hassaan Mackey.
2012 has been a massive year for Apollo releasing his most recognized work so far, the collabo LP “Trophies” with DITC founder/head member, the legendary O.C. and “Dice Game” with Detroit’s own Hip Hop heavyweight and J.Dilla protege Guilty Simpson.
Apollo’s credo is simple: “Everything I make, I try to make it my favourite album of all time.” He is building on the foundation laid down by Nas’s “Illmatic” and Black Moon’s “Enta Da Stage” in hopes of taking it one step further, and most important, is past the trepidation felt in the past. Radio is good, but Apollo’s music is for the children of the underground.

ALUBM: CLOUDS (2011)

ALBUM: RESET (2010)

DAVID DALLAS (NZ/DUCK DOWN)

Fresh off a 40 plus date tour of America David Dallas will be performing an exclusive set including tracks from his new release “Buffalo Man” EP which has all the songs inspired by, sampled or interpolated from Jamoroquai.
BIG TIME
ALBUM: SOMETHING AWESOME (2010)

P-MONEY (NZ’s #1 (PRODUCER/DJ)

P-Money is New Zealand’s most renowned Producer/DJ. His incredible talents in the studio and behind the decks have made him not only a household name in NZ but an artist to watch internationally.
SUFF DADDY (GERMANY/MPM)
With his drunken boom-bap madness with a 2010 state of mind. Dope beats, sick samples and twisted mini-korg licks, fueled with weed and Pilsetten. This is not your average Prenzelberg producer. Germany’s Suff Deezy is on his own shit.

Lyrics:

You were there from the start/ taught me to be aware of the sharks & prepare for the dark/ you kept a secret you practiced what you were preaching against/ your inner demons were praying I would tear apart/ you won’t admit but you competed just a little a bit/ I could tell cause you’d be heated over little sh*t/ telling me to quit trying & get real/ I got a little shine you was like big deal/ I was pursuing dreams, steady doin my thing/ you wasn’t doing the same you wasn’t doing a thing/ from my truest to a brutes to a judas/ to who knew that this would happen/ but the fraction was brewing it seems/ I should have seen, mistaking smoke for a little steam/ it turned to fire you burned me hoping to ruin me/ I won’t even mention your name in the bars, it’s too close to the scars/ but I’m sure n*gga you know who you are/

Chorus
You Know Who You Are

You were there from the start/ you told me what ever I’m doing to do it from the heart/ I was pursuing a dream that was cloaked in the cloth of the uncertain/ making money music & art/ and it wasn’t perfect/ you told me what ever’s worth it is worth hurting/ double edge seemingly sharp, rather unnerving/ but still, you believed in a brother/ I was starving as an artist, you was feeding a brother/ you could see in a brother what I couldn’t see myself/ when couldn’t see myself needing help/ one reason or another I was trying to do it all/ there’s allot of ways to fail but that’s the fastest to the fall/ but through it and after all you was with me not against/ you cheered me from the bench/ and now you’re with me as I ball/ and that meant, I ain’t got to mention your name in bars/ you know you’re close to my heart/ so I’m sure that/

Chorus

You were there from the start/ before you were even aware of a plan you part/ of the scheme, grand as it could seem at the top/ man can only go so high before you reached where we can’t breath/ but you know your limitations you walk patient/ while everybody starts to run for their plan B/ like a fire escape, but you stay in the kitchen/ let them sleep on their dreams, you just lying awake/ you stay eyeing the cake, they getting greedy/ and then they turn their side against you like their getting sleepy/ try to prevent you cause you ain’t too what they bout/ get in your mental convince you to take the way out/ please, let them try, let the me fail/ let them tell lies on you let them be/ let them see you prevail/ let them bail on their attempt to stunt a star/ in any event be sure that you know who you are.

Lioness presents Mark De Clive Lowe (Tru Thoughts / LA) Warehouse party.

Lioness proudly presents…

Globe-trotting, beat-making, key-tickling NZ-export Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL).

The Auckland native has been based in the musical hotbed of Los Angeles since relocating there after his decade-long stint in London’s underground scene alongside the likes of 4Hero, Benji B and Bugz in the Attic.

His most recent album ‘Renegades’ is released on UK tastemaker label Tru Thoughts and features MdCL in producer mode with collaborators nia andrews, Omar, ‘Suite for Ma Dukes’ arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, legendary percussionist Sheila E, D’angelo’s regular man on bass Pino Palladino and more stellar friends. It’s an album that prompted Okayplayer to appropriately christen MdCL “an underground phenom” and earned his new music hi-rotation worldwide. He’s already a fixture on both coasts of the USA with his monthly resident clubnites in LA and NYC alongside guests ranging from Brainfeeder’s Gaslamp Killer to jazz-crooner Jose James and drummer-extraordinaire Chris Daddy Dave.

MdCL will be coming to Sydney straight off a three week Europe tour and a quick pit stop shows in NYC/NZ. He’s bringing us a unique live show he calls REMIX:LIVE…

“The remix has always been such a fundamental part of club culture – recontextualizing something from what it was to something else completely new. I have vocal accapellas playing on the turntables and then create the beats and music on the fly, building complete remixes in real time as they happen. I’m making the records at the same time as you’re hearing them. Every show has a different vibe and I love sharing that…” – Mark de Clive-Lowe

It’s a one-man live show that has the likes of Masters At Work’s Louie Vega, hip hop legend DJ Spinna and party rocker DJ Karizma in awe – the latter calling MdCL “the illest dude I have ever seen live”. Remixing everything from his own productions to club and soul classics, even the legends aren’t safe. De Clive-Lowe says, “I love taking something everyone knows, even say a Stevie Wonder joint, and giving it a completely different setting that no one would expect or imagine.”

AUDIO: Marc Mac “Hipology” – 12 min sampler @ 101 Apparel

Marc Mac is one of a rare breed of producers who moves smoothly between different genres flitting between pseudonyms while leaving a trail of quintessential releases. Straight Outta Dollis Hill London Marc Mac is one half of the legendary outfit 4hero and also founder member of Reinforced Records a label positioned at the cornerstone of early electronic music in the UK. In the late 90‘s Marc signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin Loud Records with his group 4hero. 4hero went on to produce 2 great award winning albums with Talkin Loud “Two Pages” & “Creating Patterns”. 4hero then went on to set up a new label where they released the critically acclaimed “Play With The Changes” and most recent “Extensions”. Somewhere in this timeline, between producing music for Jill Scott to Roy Ayers, Phonte to Terry Callier, Marc started another project called Visioneers releasing a set of limited 7” singles getting the attention from top eclectic DJ’s including Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay. Visioneers was then picked up by BBE records who released the debut album “Dirty Old Hip Hop”.

Following on from the success of “Dirty Old Hip Hop” Marc returns with a new Visioneers record HIPOLOGY. “Hipology is a collage of some of my personal influences as a DJ/Producer growing up listening to Hip Hop; it’s a real eclectic mix of Breaks, Beats, Soul, Jazz, and freaky squeaks and not a sampler in sight. Visioneers is about revisiting my love for Hip Hop; What it was and what it is; the musical influences and the culture…”. Hipology will be released on BBE records late spring and features guest spots from John Robinson, TRAC & Baron, Notes to Self, Luke Parkhouse, The Support Brass & Ariya Horns.

“I can’t paint a picture with one color I need to play with them all. Music is the same for me, how can I produce or DJ one style of music? I got to play with them all.” Marc Mac (4 Hero, Visioneers, BBE).
