‘Live For The Moment’ is the debut album from Random Soul, the Australian house duo of Yogi & Husky. The duo have made a big impression in recent years with releases for labels including Strictly Rhythm, Bargrooves, Salted and Large. The album, released on their own label, Random Soul Recordings, presents an effortless journey through 15 tracks that cement their position amongst the most established names in Deep and Soulful House circles, while also showcasing their talent in creating Soul, Jazz and Funk gems.
‘Live For The Moment’ incorporates everything from floating vocals and laid-back soulful grooves riddled with live instrumentation, through to bumping, funky club tracks. The album also highlights their talent as songwriters with a string of captivating vocals featuring strong hooks, often performed by Yogi. Six vocal collaborators include well-known West Coast USA artists Chuck Love and Joshua Heath, as well as Natalie Conway, Kristen Pearson, Kyla Sexton and Louis Hale. All are close friends of Yogi & Husky, and the chemistry of the relationships shines through: “Working with friends always makes the job seem more fun too, so doing tracks with people like Joshua Heath and Chuck Love, usually meant more jokes and laughing than ‘work’ per say. We enjoy getting other people in the studio as it creates such a different dynamic”
Listening to these collaborations and the album in full, it’s clear to hear where many of Random Soul’s influences lie, with the house sounds of Miguel Migs, Joey Negro, Grant Nelson and Groove Armada providing a strong focus, alongside funk and soul artists such as Rae & Christian and Smoove & Turrell.
Since 2005, Sydney-based Yogi & Husky have become two of the city’s most well known DJ/Producer exports. Combining their production skills, varied musical talents and their mutual love of Soul, Jazz, Funk, Motown, Disco and everything in-between, they have brought the Random Soul sound alive in clubs, bars and festivals around the world, and delivered hit after hit in house music circles. Their distinct studio sound is typified by Yogi’s keyboards and vocals, and Husky’s jumping bass-lines and driving drums – a sound that has given them a worldwide following and seen them command on-going positions at the top of download store sales charts, while picking up countless licenses of their music to international compilation series’.
The first single taken from the album is ‘Mysterious’ and will feature a Richard Earnshaw remix to be released late January February 2013.

Sydney Festival and Funkdafied audiences will witness for the first time ever, the compelling and rare musical ingenuity from members of the legendary and award-winning Kashmere Stage Band – the all funk big band survivors of the late 1960’s United States Big Band competition. Eleven original members of the thirty-something Kashmere Stage Band will take to the stage as part of Sydney Festival 2013, alongside shows in Brisbane and Melbourne.
At a time when citizens took to the streets in unison with clenched fists held high as a powerful symbol of unification and resistance, racial segregation and political uncertainty compounded civil unrest, consequently reducing America to its knees.
One band stood to overcome the violence that permeated an entire nation, uniting a community together, breaking the profound racial tension through the power of Funk music!
In 1967, Texan music teacher Conrad O. Johnson formed a band with his all African American high school students at Kashmere High School called the Kashmere Stage Band. Competing in the fiercely competitive, conservative and almost entirely white national High School Stage Band Competitions, the Kashmere Stage Band exceled beyond expectations.
The Kashmere Stage Band
Johnson and his big band broke down racial barriers and challenged the status quo with their elaborate funk arrangements. He also changed the band’s look, encouraging them to embrace their own inimitable style by introducing an unprecedented element of showmanship; with each section choreographing slick moves with their instruments.
Amassing multiple awards around the nation, they went on to perform in Europe and Japan upon invitation. Reigning as the untouchable champions of the Big Band prestigious competition for years, Johnson not only changed the lives of hundreds of students, he instilled racial pride, faith and inner strength at a time when such values seemed a distant fable. Ultimately, his teaching methods went on to impact an entire education system, valuing and placing importance on the arts. His rigorous and heart-felt teaching methods were later espoused by the US education system, and to this day, continues to make an impact upon the lives of many students.
The band’s recordings have been collected by crate-diggers, feted (and sampled) by luminaries like DJ Shadow, and reissued by respected record label Stones Throw Records. All members of Kashmere Stage Band are aged in their 50’s, proving that music can not only serve as a powerful tool for education and change, but transcends age, race and gender.
What happens next proves to be historic!
For Sydney siders, Sydney Festival’s Paradiso at Town Hall and Sutherland Entertainment Centre, Kashmere Stage Band live performance is preceded by a screening of the fascinating documentary about them entitled Thunder Soul, narrated by Jamie Foxx. This is inspiring documentary details the history of the band and them coming together again for a special performance 30 years later. It is a truly inspirational documentary that details the legacy of both the Kashmere Stage Band and their legendary teacher Conrad ‘Prof’ Johnson.

As a warm up for the Spirit of House warehouse party here is a pretty sweet Larry Levan Mixtape by the mighty DJ SPINNA! an absolute gem of a mix feature a stack of seminal funk, disco & early house cuts.
Here’s a mix of some of my personal favorite Larry Levan remixes and productions. Many people in the dance community already understand the role that Larry had on shaping the New York club culture via the legendary Paradise Garage which lasted a little over a decade. I was fortunate enough to experience Larry’s magic in the G the year the club came to an end in 1987. You could only get in as a member and luckily one of the older members on my block was able to make it happen for me. I was in my teens and it literally changed my life forever. I caught that bug…It’s something that’s embedded in your soul for an eternity. I sometimes hear from older members that I should have been around when he was really on fire in the earlier days, but 1987 was good enough for me. The sound system alone was something that I have yet to see duplicated. You could feel the bass in your chest. I remember riding home on the train feeling like I had gone deaf. My ears never rang again like it did that sunday afternoon.
I grew up listening to his music mainly on WBLS via Frankie Crocker and Tony Humphries in the early 80s’ and I have memories of going to my local record store in the neighborhood to buy jams like ‘Let’s Go Dancin” by Sparque and I got ‘My Mind Made Up’ by Instant Funk, both included in this session. As a New Yorker and anyone living in New York in the 80′s you couldn’t really avoid Larry’s work. Some of his work even infiltrated the hip hop world via samples with records like ‘Heartbeat’ by Taana Gardner, ’7th Heaven’ used in Biggie’s ‘Friend of Mine’ and Central Line’s ‘Walking Into Sunshine’ used in the classic LL Cool J/Marley Marl remix of ‘Jingling Baby.’
Some call it Boogie, some say Disco, and some Garage but at the end of the day it’s straight up good music that you can dance to and enjoy, period! This is part one, more to come shortly.
Uno,
Spinna

Pitch & Scratch take the next step and introduce vocalists and lyricists who share a similar, funky and peaceful vision to the family? This is where Wayne Martin comes in. Born in New Orleans and now living in Europe, this respected blues singer came up with the very personal, moving “Papa Never Was A Genius”, which Mzuzu and Suro turned into an uplifting latin-soul groover. Speaking of uplifting spirits: With the voice of Brazilian singer Leila Pantel “Maculele” and “Vem Meu Bem” give the album a energetic summer vibe. Seanie T., the rapper from South East London is talking serious business. “Pitch Me And Scratch Me” is a piece of true, down to earth and gritty UK hiphop. Plus there can only be one Alex Prince, well-known in the German urban scene, to top this funky line-up of vocalists. “Funk Is Ruling in My Head” has the message in the title and is taking Alex Prince back to the roots of funk. We are going to release this as the first single.
But what would the funk be without the horns and the percussion. “Together” is a big shout-out to the power of brass. Here we have the Diazpora Horns, the Boxhorns (of Jan Delay & Disko No.1) and Pitch & Scratch’s homies of the Superbad Horns. Put this in line with the super tight percussion of Lack of Afro in “Papa Never Was A Genius” and we have something really special going on.
Towards the end of the album Pitch & Scratch join the “Road To Saturn” while they “Roll’n Rock”. Here we have it all “Together”: Deep, serious clubby vibes, from the people for the people, no posing just the groove next to the adrenalin of a sweating Northern Soul dancefloor packed with a crowd which is completely in it for the music. That’s what we call “Together”!
Mzuzu
With more than 1000 DJ-sets on the agenda since his introduction to the scene in 1999 Mzuzu from Hamburg/Germany is one of the hardest working faces in the business, simply becaus he does not only DJ but is a crafted multi-instrumentalist as well as a studied music scientist. Starting with cello, he moved on to the guitar and the bass and founded Superbad! In 2004. The band supported legends like Lyn Collins and Blowfly, at the same time he perfected his composition and musician skills and recorded with local artists, from independent to big names like Hamburg legend Carsten Bohn, with whom he played in the Urban Session/Organic Band, Samy Deluxe, Jan Delay
