Named by LIFE Magazine as one of the most important Americans of the 20th Century, DJ AFRIKA BAMBAATAA is a musical visionary, DJ extraordinaire, living legend and founder of the Universal Zulu Nation – a collective of socially and politically aware emcees, DJs, graffiti artists and break dancers. With over 35 years trailblazin’ around the world, Bam, as he’s affectionately known, can almost single-handedly be credited for the urban music revolution – redefining music and culture as we know it today. In fact, Bam is the person responsible for coining the term “Hip Hop” in reference to this global movement.

The man behind Hip Hop/Electro Funk classic ‘Planet Rock’ over the years has co-produced and performed with the likes of James Brown, George Clinton, UB40, Fort Knox Five, Leftfield, Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest among many others.

Bam’s futuristic soundscapes became a major influence in the development of not only hip-hop, but have also been instrumental in laying the foundation for Breaks, Electro, Freestyle, Techno and House music. “Planet Rock” has become arguably the most sampled song in music history, having been remixed and sampled by the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Westbam, George Acosta, LL Cool J, Mariah Carey and countless others. Rap/Metal band Rage Against The Machine also famously covered Bam’s track ‘Renegades of Funk’.

Still extremely active, Bam continues to record, tour and educate, maintaining his status as a living legend and forefather of the art. In 2006, Bam was honored for his incredible achievements by American music channel VH1 at the annual ‘Hip Hip Honors’ show and in 2007; he was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, Bam accepted an appointment as visiting scholar at Cornell University where he speaks to classes, meets with students, community groups and performs the music he helped create and expand.

This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to sample what a New York City Block Party is all about, live and direct from the Boogie Down Bronx! Be immersed in the knowledge of a master, icon and living treasure that is DJ AFRIKA BAMBAATAA.

A  Few points that might help you organise you day better;

  • It is a FAMILY FRIENDLY PICNIC first and foremost so might be a good idea really to pack for a Sunday Picnic in the park (eski/ picnic basket, fruit, drinks and something to sit on etc.)
  • We have a spot with a stack of grass around with plenty of room for kids, it is 5 mins from city around Alexandria, there is shade but best people bring some hats etc.
  • We will have a Sound System with selectors playing an eclectic mix of real music including everything from Sade to James Brown to De La Soul, Erykah Badu & Masters At Work, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles.
  • It is open decks with rotating DJ’s (but best people get in touch via soulofsydney@gmail.com if keen to play to confirm time slots)
  • We usually aim to get everything starting at about 12pm with ending time around depending on vibe.
  • We will be waiting for the weather forecast before we make the call as it is outdoors, if it does look like it’s going to rain then we will simply move till next sunny Sunday. (We will be in touch a few days out for the event via email & on the day via SMS in case we have to move the party, so we will need your Mobile details too so we can get location details quicker)
  • ARTIST CALL OUT: If you are a local Musician, MC, Singer, Percussionist or DJ then we are very keen to hear from you if you would like to play, especially if you down to play percussion along the Djs in an open jam vibe for Sunday. (we are hoping to get thing going as a regular Sunday afternoon local soul funk and hip hop open jam session so if your keen to be part of it let us know)
  • For local Soul music fan then we simply wants you there enjoying the music, so get a group of friends together, spread the word and come down for a day out it the park to some real music.

Thanks again for getting behind the idea kids.. Sydney definitely needs more people like YOU!

Pray for good weather & hope to see you all at the next one.

Peace,

Soul of Sydney and Co.

ABOUT

Diversity is a template for success for any artist, Sydney based music producer Pedram Rouzbehani known to his fans as “P.R” crafted his art around diversity drawn from life experiences & cultural upbringing.

Dubbed as a 4D producer, he exhibits the importance of not being 1 dimensional when it comes to creating his art. Despite becoming increasingly popular within the Hip Hop and R&B scene, P.R has expanded his horizons by creating Jazz, Soul, and House music.

His inspiration is drawn from his life and observing the world around him, which has created his passion to create positive music with good vibes or what he refers to it as “feel good music”. He loves to experiment with different moods of music by fusing multiple genres of current and past music.

He is influenced by Life, Sound, Film and Music (from Hip Hop to Classical). The main influences in his production style have been the great works of DJ Premier, Nujabes, 9th Wonder, Kanye West, J Dilla, Just Blaze, Hi-Tek, Statik Selektah, Alchemist & Timbaland.

In 2006 he committed himself to focusing on producing music seriously, whilst studying at university to complete his bachelor of Electronic Arts. His rentless drive started paying off as he was starting to get more attention and started to establish himself as a serious producer.

In January 2010, he released his debut mixtape “Pre-Heated” which was hosted by world famous DJ/Producer “Statik Selektah”. The mixtape featured artists from around the world such as Naledge (from Kidz in the Hall), Chaundon, Mystro, Carla Waye, 13th Son & many others. The mixtape achived great accomplishment clocking over 15,000 downloads, as well as being featured on 100+ websites, magazine articles and frequent radio air time.

In April 2010, he received a bachelor degree after completing a 4 year course in Electronic Arts, which he had studied Digital Music as one of his main subjects.

In May 2011, he released an e.p titled “Bridging The Gap” with New York legend “Ali Vegas”, with his music partner “The Iron Ghost”, under their music production duo called “Sound Kamp”.

He is currently working on many projects, including a solo e.p titled “Introspection”, plus producing for many other artists on many projects. To date, P.R has worked with a bunch of artists from all around the globe in Australia, Asia, Europe and America.

He plans to travel around Asia in 2012 to expand his music into the Asian market and work with Asian artists and labels, as well as follow in the footsteps of one of his biggest musical influences “Nujabes”, by taking on the hip-hop with jazz fused genre and getting recognized in the Japanese Music Scene.

His love for music & the cultures, as well as the joy and thrill of making music and experiencing other artists embrace and use it, are what drives him to continuously create and produce.

- Dress code – Mask. Smart casual. Think Venice!

See you on the first day of winter (01/06)!

We promise to keep you warm!

Check us on youtube:

Humans have used masks for different purposes throughout time. One of the main reasons has been to create a different atmosphere in parties involving music, dance and art.

Knowing that the word Bossa was a typical slang originated in Brazil to describe anything that could be ‘cool’, we decided to put on a party to bring the cool attitude of Multicultural Sydney at its best. We are going to transform one of the best live music venues in Sydney (Blue Beat) into a ‘ludic’ night of music and dance.

Featuring Abuka an upcoming power trio that has been known all over Sydney by its delivery of funky infused grooves that allow our senses to experience different sounds and rhythms. In other words be prepared for a heavy dose of mix Brazilian rhythms with jazz and funk.

Alongside the terrific Abuka, Dj La Veneria and Dj Rapha (Vibez Brazil) we’ll keep you busy in the dance floor in a mix range of funky cheeky tunes and up-beat tropical sounds of Latin America.

Choose your mask, dust off your dancing shoes and be prepared for this unmissable and exotic night full of funky grooves! Damn!

SYDNEY HIP HOP: Chance Waters – Maybe Tomorrow Ft Lilian Blue

As of 7pm tonight, Chance Waters will be officially releasing his new single “Maybe Tomorrow”, check the unlisted YouTube link below to have a listen immediately!

Here is what Lewi McKirdy said about the song at Triple J;

“So jaunty and sweet! The charm of the song fully curtains the neg-out theme in the lyrics. I love that! Such a bright spin on a bunch of bad shit. Sunny dispositions fix a lot.”

Please contact me if you would like to be door listed for the Sydney show this Saturday night at the FBi Social.

Following the success of his first single ‘Infinity’, (currently sitting at over 20,000 views on YouTube), Chance has had his head down in the studio and this weekwill release his new track, ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ from his soon to be released album, ‘Infinity’.

Produced by One Above, (The Hilltops) the new single demonstrates Chance’s lyrical potency and his potential to push the typical boundaries of the hip-hop genre with an up-beat tempo, off-beat rhythm, piano-rock influences and live instrumentation.

Following widespread national acclaim under the appellation Phatchance, Sydney hip hop artist Chance Waters is losing the alias and going ‘au naturale’ with his given name. Chance is facing a ride on a wave of aftershock following his previous success that can only further shake up the Australian hip-hop scene, as we know it.

Chance’s debut album INKSTAIN saw the artist claim Featured Artist spots on triple j Unearthed and Music NSW as well as topping charts in AMRAP’s Most Ordered To Air Chart. After sparking a rave of support including The Australian Newspaper labeling him as “an intelligent lyricist and masterful storyteller”, Chance is well on his way to becoming a best-selling artist invigorating “a breath of fresh air” (Rave Mag).

Chance is undeniably cementing his place as a “burgeoning hip-hop star” (Dom Alessio, triple j) and carving the path for Australian hip-hop as he goes.

ABOUT THIS EVENT

Red Bull Beat Suite is a drawing together of cultures which is as ambitious as it is thrilling. Take the nation’s best beat makers, put them on stage with the Australian Youth Orchestra, throw in US soul singer and hip hop luminary Aloe Blacc plus special guest singers and musicians, and cast them under the intrepid direction of The Raah Project’s Tamil Rogeon.

Red Bull Beat Suite is homage to the last 20 years of urban beats and electronic music genres, told by Australia’s and the world’s most cutting edge musicians, producers and vocalists through a ‘mix tape’ of orchestra, turntables and live beats.

Adding to the experience, Melbourne’s own and world renown ENESS will create a never before seen interactive visual display, utilising their own award winning 3D projection mapping technologies.

GROOVE THERAPY has been broadcasting since 2002, every Friday lunchtime (12pm) on radio 2SER FM, Sydney Australia.
The show is presented and mixed by Shan Frenzie.

Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, R&B, Disco and party jams! Shan Frenzie grew up on a healthy diet of these sounds. He’s not some newschool DJ wannabe, flexing his beatport MP3′s and pumping his fists in the air. He’s got over 20 years of experience behind him, a record collection that will make any other DJ envious, and a concrete rep as one of Australia’s most trusted party rockers.

Frenzie has been around the block more than a few times, and seen a bunch of styles come and go over the years – many of them originally championed in the club by him. Taking inspiration from when DJ’s used to play for no less than 6 hours straight and transition between styles: Original Soul & Funk 45′s – Check. Deep House, Disco & Boogie – check. Hip Hop, R&B, Breaks & Beats – Check. Party joints and forgotten classics – Check!

Frenzie by nature? The name came from that mid eighties era when Australia adopted Hip Hop culture. Back when writing your names on trains, cutting it up on the turntables at neighbourhood jams, and laying down your latest production on a 4 track cassette recorder was the thing. He was catching wreck on the turntables long before earning your rep on facebook was the norm.

Since those days he has grown out of his namesake somewhat and done a number of significant things: Managed regular residencies at a number of Sydney’s most successful night clubs, Hosted 5 different radio shows up and down the east coast, written articles for many leading street press publications, and toured around Australia with some of the biggest events in the festival circuit. It’s never been just about playing other peoples music – Frenzie has the qualifications to teach many a young buck DJ a thing or two about being a genuine lover of the music.

But can he rock a party? Frenzie has been dropping memorable sets for years. Whether it be a one hour power mix or an all night marathon set behind the tuntables, Frenzie has plenty of experience reading the crowd and always drops an entertaining set – custom built from carefully considered quality jams and a dash of turntable trickery (Yeah, the man can most definitely mix a record!).

Shan Frenzie also hosts one of Sydney’s most beloved radio shows “Groove Therapy” – An hour and half long weekly mixtape of uninterrupted music gems from the “funkier” side of dance music history. It’s been broadcasting live on radio 2SER FM since 2002, and podcasting around the world for just as long – and as all his regular listeners know, stands testament to Shan Frenzie’s dedication to purveying great music to party down to.

AUS HIP HOP: Thundamentals ‘FOREVERLUTION’ ALBUM LAUNCH at OAF, (Sat 26th Nov)

26 November @ Oxford Art Factory – Sydney

Tickets at moshtix.com.au

Sleek, sweaty, banging and pro; when it comes to their live show, Blue Mnts come Newtown hip hop 3 piece Thundamentals are a band in demand. As a live review by Mess + Noise of their recent performance @ the BIGSOUND music industry conference in Brisbane would attest: “one of the classiest hip-hop acts in Australia right now…tight, charismatic, and bring some monster beats”. AAA Backstage noted of the same performance; “Aussie hip hop’s brightest hope? Quite possibly so”.

As their new album Foreverlution was hitting the shelves 6 weeks ago Thundamentals were prepping for a national run of dates with Big Boi; and before the dust could settle from that trip they’d already struck out again on a 6 week long, 15 date engagement with Drapht. The long and short of all this is that though it’s just over a month and a half since their album release, only now are the band announcing their own ‘Foreverlution Album Launch Tour’.

In stores the last week of July through Obese Records, Foreverlution hit with a bang. Debuting nationally at #3 on the Air Charts, #17 on ARIA Urban Charts and #19 on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Album Charts, the response from media and public alike was unanimous. Lead single from the album ‘Paint The Town Red’ was immediately added to triple J rotation (top 20 most played track on triple J – week of release) and was the 9th most downloaded track on Australian radio through AIR IT (week of release). FBI made the album their ‘Feature Album of The Week’ (week prior to release), and on it went.

The Clip

Thundamentals have also just released their clip for 1st single ‘Paint The Town Red’. The concept of the clip was simple, strap on a camera and ‘Paint The Town Red’. The result is a ‘night in the life of’ clip that, in a quite specific case of life imitating art and art imitating life, sees actors and band alike all end up considerably ‘frayed around the edges’ by clip’s end.

“Foreverlution was made for international attention… delivers the goods in every way imaginable” – The Mercury

“Thundamentals talent will not be denied… clearly determined to conquer the top tier of Australian hip hop” – Inpress Magazine
“Aussie Hip Hop’ has always been a fairly loaded label, and it feels too limiting and too narrow, especially when you have an album like this. Foreverlution, Thundamentals’ second offering, is hip hop pure and simple, produced with style and flair, and with both classic and evolutionary sounds in mind” – The Brag

“Foreverlution sounds polished, it sounds natural and it sounds effortless, all the way from the production to the verbal delivery” – Rip It Up

Foreverlution is out now through Obese Records. For more info check out: http://www.obeserecords.com
