THE SOULSHAKER STORY

SoulShaker is the love child of Sydney based DJs Mr Glass and Robin Knight. Friends since the late 80’s and occasionally sharing the same stage throughout the 90’s, they found themselves tussling over the same decks on an ever-increasing regularity in the new millennium. This was read as a signal from the Gods that resulted in their decision to partner up as a package. At the time very few dj’s were playing the music they wanted to play or hear, so it was only natural they should go down this path. In the wild I think this may be natural selection.
The SoulShaker sound is really both Pete and Robin’s joint musical heritage, fused seamlessly together to produce a unique sound system. Not wanting to be pigeon-holed these days is hard to avoid, but SoulShaker achieves this by playing across numerous musical styles, and by not being afraid to experiment by dropping the “weird”, the “surprising”, the “classic”, the “obscure” or simply the “wonderful” at unexpected moments during a set.
Today, SoulShaker as a brand has grown far greater than just a couple of dj’s and has developed into a hub of entertainment services with a collective stable of impressive niche market dj’s, club nights, sound systems & live performers.
A quick peek into our crackerjack DJ & artists roster will revel accomplished bios with a sublime record of venues & events we have played and international artists we have shared the stage with.

Soul Of Sydney Podcast #12 – The Australia Day All Aussie FUNK MIX By DJ Kinetic
Happy Australia Day kids, hope you enjoy this ALL Aussie funk mixup by local DJ, Radio presenter and crate digger Dj Kinetic…
Since stumbling across the ‘Respect Overdue’ compilation that Creative Vibes put out some years ago, I have been hot on the trail of rare and interesting funky music recorded in Australia, my own backyard. The following mix is a testament to my love of local flavors, and a bit of a poke at people who don’t think Aussies can be funky. This mix includes some of my favorites, some of my discoveries, and a couple of very, very rare numbers. I wanted to make it seamless, but time was a factor in putting this together. Still, for the most part I’ve managed to get tracks to blend into each other. Let me know what you thought! -

About Sloppy Seconds
A re-edit label (Sloppy Seconds – get it?). You can find me digitally on Juno for now. I do have plans to press up vinyl sometime in the near future. The material that I plan on using for the vinyl releases will be titles exclusive to the wax catalogue (I have a secret stash saved specifically for this purpose). I’ll let you all know when that happens.
A music resource website. I’ve been collecting vinyl since the early/mid 80′s and have amassed quite an amount of relatively obscure stuff and started the blog as a way to promote lesser known artists and their releases. Because of the controversy surrounding mp3s I had originally intended to only post titles that are out of print, but I also realized that there are tons of new releases that are equally as amazing that weren’t being promoted very well. The music selection there varies greatly and includes just about anything that moves me and/or makes me laugh. Here’s the addy. Make yourselves at home. Beer is in the fridge.
http://kennyconga.blogspot.com/
(For the record, I have received numerous emails stating that purchases of posted material were made due to promotion of said titles from the blog.)
And a DJ. I’ve been DJing for quite some time now. Most of you have never heard of me, which might have something to do with the severe lack of self promotion over the years – I never liked that part of the job, but I’ve come to the conclusion that the self promotion game needed to be stepped up if I wanted to continue to do this.

About ‘Cumbia’
The word ‘Cumbia’ came from the African word “Cumbé”, or party. It’s known as the queen of African rhythms & It has 3 cultural influences (African, Andean & Spanish).
The music originated around the 1820’s during Colombia’s struggle for independence as an expression of national resistance against Spain.
Both the African & Andean influences are obvious in ‘Cumbia’, the rhythms adopted from African slaves used by the Spanish & Andean flutes & poetry make up the core elements of the music .
Originally only performed with drums & claves it has since evolved to include; flutes, guitars, accordion, horns, brass & traditional drums & percussion.
Today it is very popular in Latin America & has even evolved into new forms mixed with Ska, Reggae, Hip Hop & Drum N Bass known as ‘Cumbia digital’ These elements & influences can be found in the music of ; Quanic, Ozomatli, DJ Spinna, Los Lobos & Los Kumbia Kings.
Even in Australia it will be featured at the 2010 Big Day Out Lilly Pad.
For a good introduction to ‘Cumbia’, check out: Cumbia Cumbia , Vol. 1 & 2 released by World Circuit Records (1983, 1989).
