(EVENT) DETROIT TECHNO, DEEP HOUSE: Anthony “Shake” Shakir Live in Sydney

Anthony Shake Shakir @ The Sydney Underground

Anthony Shake Shakir @ The Sydney Underground

Tickets $20+BF: http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?287280

Detroit producer Anthony “Shake” Shakir is one of the more under recognized, underappreciated names in American techno. A bedroom producer since 1981, Shake had an important role in helping shape the early Motor City sound associated with artists such as Juan Atkins/Model 500 and Derrick May. He worked with May and Carl Craig as a producer, writer, or engineer on several early tracks on Metroplex, and worked in management and A&R for the label (as well, he’s often joked, as being the janitor) during its formative years. His first solo material appeared on Virgin’s seminal Techno Sound of Detroit compilation, under the name Sequence 10. Known as something of a techno purist, Shake has distanced himself from the European scene many of his colleagues have turned to for support (this accounts somewhat for his continuing obscurity), and his music is stylistically closer to second wave artists such as Mike Banks and Claude Young – hard, stripped-down tracks which owe equally to techno, electro, hip-hop, and funk.

Shake’s visibility and reputation have risen in more recent years as a result of his Frictional and Puzzlebox labels, the latter of which he formed in 1996 with fellow Detroit electro/techno producer Keith Tucker (formerly of Aux 88). Releasing a series of records both solo and in combination (usually under the name Da Sampla), Shake and Tucker’s Puzzlebox has, along with Underground Resistance and Guidance, become one of the more coveted sources of straight-up, no-bones Detroit techno.

Thanks to Rush Hour Records – the “Shake” has had a new lease on life and with the amazing compliation – “Frictionalism” earlier in 2010, this sky rocketed Shakir back into the scene.

This is Anthony first time in Australia and we are very excited to be able to show case his talents. Anthony amazing production plus his amazing energy and DJ skills behind the decks will make this a very special night.

Along side Anthony we have Joe Stanley and Daniel Lupica.

Age Of Love – Age Of Love (Rare Original 1990 Version) Vs Age of Love – Age of Love (Jam & Spoon Remix)

I suppose the remix of this is well known but this is the Original version out before the well known Jam & Spoon Remix which came out two years after.  It is considered an electronic masterpiece and can be considered as the first techno-trance record ever. It was composed by Bruno Sanchioni, the man behind Diki ‘s best releases like Plexus, Dr. Phibes or the legendary Bazz. He released great records from the french/belgian border city of Mouscron opening the door to a whole new genre.

CLASSIC ACID HOUSE, TECHNO: JOEY BELTRAM – ENERGY FLASH (1991)

The Original Classic Deep, Moody, Underground Acid Techno cut the New York’s legendry Joey Beltram from way back in 1991.

& still rocking the subs on dance-floors today.

Joey Beltram – Energy Flash GRAFFITI ON MARS REMIX ( DOWNLOAD)

Joey Beltram (Wiki)

Joey Beltram (born November 6, 1971 in Queens, New York City, United States) is an American DJ and record producer, best-known for the pioneering recordings “Energy Flash” and “Mentasm”.

Mentasm, co-produced with Mundo Muzique, became iconic within rave culture, as it was the track that gave birth to the “mentasm riff” (also known as the “Hoover sound“): a churning, dirgelike synth pattern that wormed into techno’s communal genome and has since been mutated and reused in literally thousands of records.[citation needed] Beltram and the “mentasm riff” are strongly associated with drum and bass, the Belgian techno scene, and the R&S record label, as well as hardcore/hard house in their various permutations since 1994.[citation needed] Beltram was referenced as a pioneer in the late 1990s house music scene by Daft Punk, in their song “Teachers” off their 1997 debut album, Homework and author, Simon Reynolds, credited Beltram with having “revolutionized techno twice before the age of 21,[1]” when describing both “Energy Flash” and “Mentasm” in his book Generation Ecstasy.

Throughout the years, Beltram has continually toured at major festivals around the globe.[2] He has also continued releasing techno, with his 1993 and 1994 tracks “Aonox” on Visible and “the Beltram re-releases” on Trax, the “Caliber” EP on Warp, and his 1995 LP Places and 1996 single, “Ball Park” on Tresor counting among his work in the 1990s. He was also invited to release another album, Close Grind, on Daniel Miller’s Novamute imprint under the JB³ alias.[3]

In 1999, he launched his own label STX[4] with Arena, while he continued to release under Code 6 and JB³, as well as headlining events such as Awakenings, Coachella, Nature One, Mayday and Dance Valley. Returning to Tresor in 2004, he released the album Rising Sun. And he has kept up a busy release schedule ever since, with tracks on Womb, Harthouse, Drumcode, MB Electroniks, and Bush. Perhaps his best-selling single of recent times is his remix of Oliver Huntemann’s “Shanghai Spinner,” which hit the Beatport Top 10 in 2009.[5] It was also included in Simian Mobile Disco‘s Essential Mix at the beginning of 2010.[6]

CLASSIC DETROIT HOUSE: Theo Parrish – Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix) Vs Theo Parrish – Falling Up (Original)

Theo Parrish – Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix)

When two of the great musical minds of Detroit Techno & House come together it is always going to be special isn’t it. Carl Craig completely stripped the original Theo Parrish cut “Falling Up” and packed it with everything from Jazz Keys, padded synthesizers and white noise like only he can. This is an absolute killer reworking that has been a favorite for us and on dance floors around Sydney for years.

And just to give you an idea of how much of  Carl Craig put into this, just check out the original version below;

CHICAGO HOUSE CLASSIC: Adonis – We’re Rockin Down The House (Original Trax Record Version)

Adonis – We’re Rockin Down The House

Another classic 303 cut by Adonis on Trax Records.

Whenever I hear this I always think back to the times I heard Simon Caldwell drop this one at Mad Racket on the wooden dancefloor at Marrckville Bowling Club Sydney, it has been a while since I been to one of their parties but they always deliverd with the music, one of the few parties still flying the flag for chicago & deep house sounds  in Sydney.

Rockin’ Down The House (Toby Tobias & Hardway Bros Re-edit)

I also been hearing this re-edit around in mixes and on dancefloors a bit, remixed as part of the Trax Re-edited selection featuring edits by Greg Wilson, Leftside Wobble, Leo Zero, JD Twitch, Andy Blake, Swag, Ray Mang, Justin Harris, Neville Watson and more

ACID HOUSE CLASSIC: Maurice Joshua – This is Acid (TRAX)

Maurice JoshuaThis is Acid (TRAX)

(Download RARE Original ACID MIX)

In the 1980s, Joshua was active as a DJ and producer in the early days of the house music scene. His earliest productions were released on the Trax Records label. In the early 1990s, Joshua began producing remixes of songs by artists like Ce Ce Peniston, Malaika and many pop artists, including Michael Jackson. He continues to remix to this day.

Joshua is best known for his 1989 number one Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart hit “This Is Acid (A New Dance Craze).” The hit version of this song was a remix by UK DJ Les Adams, who pitted its spoken male vocals by “Hot Hands Hula” Malone against a combination of regional house music sounds of the day, including samples of sirens and sexual screaming voices in the background.

Joshua’s most famous production work was with Kim English and pop group Destiny’s Child. His partnership with the group’s leader Beyoncé was compared to the partnership of Mariah Carey and David Morales, because like Carey and Morales, Joshua and Beyoncé often work closely together to have Beyoncé re-sing her vocals for club mix version of her hit singles.[citation needed] At The 46th Annual Grammy Awards 2004, his remix of Beyoncé’s massive hit “Crazy in Love“, known as “Krazy in Luv (Maurice’s Nu Soul remix)” won Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.

This is what I call a remix!

Hardfloor, Acid Techno duo consisting of Oliver Bondzio & Ramon Zenkewho really know their way around a Roland TB – 303.

Check out this remix they did in 1994 of an African pop song by Mory Kante.

Mory Kante – Yeke Yeke (Hardfloor Remix)

Their distinctive acid flavour is running right through this, it went on to become an instant classic across the world & propelled Kanté to some unexpected fame again in 1994.

Here is what Hardfloor had to work with, quite amazing this could have become one of the timeless tunes of the techno era.
