Here is a clip of some of the fun from the last party a few weeks back, right after a storm when we were forced to move for shelter in a brick pit for an afternoon of classic Chicago HOUSE, SOUL, FUNK and.. ERIC B and RAKIM!
One for the real old school heads – Grand Wizard Theodore ‘The Inventor of the Scratch’ brings his box full of classic ORIGINAL B-Boy breaks and beats to play a rare mini set on Funkmaster Flex‘s ‘Street Jams’ show on Hot 97 and lets Dot-A-Rock get busy on the mic too.
For the uninitiated Grand Wizard Theodore is credited as being the Inventor of the scratch & master of the needle drop, also featuring in the first Hip Hop movie ever made called “Wildstyle” (1983). As well as contributing to the original sound track, with his catch phrase “Say Turn it up” being sampled from Public to many a hip hop act world wide, he apprenticed under the legendary DJ Grand Master Flash, and was part of the group The Fantastic 5 which he released the old school classic “Can I Get A Soulclap” (1980). Grand Wizard Theodore was most recently featured in the DJ Documentary “Scratch” and continues to tour the world showcasing his amazing DJ skill’s to this day, as well as being a member of the Mighty Universal Zulu Nation.
Don’t miss the man with the flawless needle drop as he play’s a 2 hour set of turntablism meets party rocking b-boy breaks & beats, supported by some of Australia’s most respected DJs.
Sleek, sweaty, banging and pro; when it comes to their live show, Blue Mnts come Newtown hip hop 3 piece Thundamentals are a band in demand. As a live review by Mess + Noise of their recent performance @ the BIGSOUND music industry conference in Brisbane would attest: “one of the classiest hip-hop acts in Australia right now…tight, charismatic, and bring some monster beats”. AAA Backstage noted of the same performance; “Aussie hip hop’s brightest hope? Quite possibly so”.
As their new album Foreverlution was hitting the shelves 6 weeks ago Thundamentals were prepping for a national run of dates with Big Boi; and before the dust could settle from that trip they’d already struck out again on a 6 week long, 15 date engagement with Drapht. The long and short of all this is that though it’s just over a month and a half since their album release, only now are the band announcing their own ‘Foreverlution Album Launch Tour’.
In stores the last week of July through Obese Records, Foreverlution hit with a bang. Debuting nationally at #3 on the Air Charts, #17 on ARIA Urban Charts and #19 on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Album Charts, the response from media and public alike was unanimous. Lead single from the album ‘Paint The Town Red’ was immediately added to triple J rotation (top 20 most played track on triple J – week of release) and was the 9th most downloaded track on Australian radio through AIR IT (week of release). FBI made the album their ‘Feature Album of The Week’ (week prior to release), and on it went.
The Clip
Thundamentals have also just released their clip for 1st single ‘Paint The Town Red’. The concept of the clip was simple, strap on a camera and ‘Paint The Town Red’. The result is a ‘night in the life of’ clip that, in a quite specific case of life imitating art and art imitating life, sees actors and band alike all end up considerably ‘frayed around the edges’ by clip’s end.
“Foreverlution was made for international attention… delivers the goods in every way imaginable” – The Mercury
“Thundamentals talent will not be denied… clearly determined to conquer the top tier of Australian hip hop” – Inpress Magazine
“Aussie Hip Hop’ has always been a fairly loaded label, and it feels too limiting and too narrow, especially when you have an album like this. Foreverlution, Thundamentals’ second offering, is hip hop pure and simple, produced with style and flair, and with both classic and evolutionary sounds in mind” – The Brag
“Foreverlution sounds polished, it sounds natural and it sounds effortless, all the way from the production to the verbal delivery” – Rip It Up

WHY NOW?
This came about due to the overwhelming disappointment with the closer of so many GREAT music venues in Sydney recently, we felt the time is right we put something like this out there to the locals who have been supporting the music we love.
This is local music communal get together and we are, will have a Sound System, Decks & Mic set up so if you are keen to help out with music or a mini show case let us know via FB or e-mail.
“Good Life“, the seminal Detroit house classic originally released way back in 1988 still sounded funky as hell on that massive sound system at the Civic Underground last night.
Big ups to Terrence Parker for dropping this one last night & a massive THANK YOU to everyone who came down and supported some REAL house sounds in the Sydney Underground.
Stay close for more event information and the special Terrence Parker live podcast we will be posting pretty soon too.
What more can be said about this cat? At Soul Of Sydney, we think Terrence Parker is the DJ’s DJ ! The DJ that Detroit legends like Jeff Mills, DJ Bone, Derrick May & Juan Attkin would go to see. Coming to Australia for the first time, Terrence brings skills that very few dj’s possess, and an ability to rock a dance floor no matter what style of music he plays.
Check TP in action dropping some Hip Hop in Japan.
We are back by DOPE demand after a stack of positive messages & e-mails we will be hosting our second ‘Blockparty Picnic’ on SUNDAY 4th Dec parkside in a hush hush location in Alexandria.
Similar vibes as the last one, a family friendly sunday picnic in the park from 12pm with day time beats from rotating DJ’s including; Phil Toke, Michael Zac & Eadie Ramia + C Man, Mason (Paper Plane Project) & Nathan (DoJo Cuts & The Liberators)
A massive THANK YOU! to everyone who helped get this off this ground last Sunday, it was a little rushed.. a little unorganised but ended up being a pretty special day for us & really confirmed how much the REAL MUSIC heads in Sydney love to party. Great crew to get down with.
Hats off to all who came out during the day.. & massive thanks to you guys who made us set the Sound System under the covers of some massive trees even after the rain came in.. You cats ARE THE SOUL OF SYDNEY!
We will be getting this going again very soon! so get in touch on our facebook page or email us for details or if you want to get invloved playing some music etc.
Peace

Just caught some GREAT news on twitter that Erykah Badu will back in Sydney early next year performing at the Sydney Opera House & what better way then celebrate with a BADU Mixtape of her dropping rare classic funk and hip hop gems on BBC radio.
Sunday 19th Feb – Sydney Opera House Wednesday 22nd Feb – Palais – Melbourne with Fat Freddy’s Drop
Saturday 25th Feb – Kings Park & Botanic Garden – Perth with Fat Freddy’s Drop
GRAMMY® award winning artist Erykah Badu is touching down in Australia this summer in what is sure to be the hottest ticket of the season.
Forging her own path in soul music and almost single-handedly directing the genre since the ’97 debut Baduizm, Badu’s releases have always demanded critics attention, whilst her live shows incite rapturous engagement from audiences as she bursts through hits like On & On, Love Of My Life, Apple Tree, Tyrone, Bag Lady, Window Seat and more.
Her latest release New Amerykah Part II (Return Of The Ankh) further pushed the boundaries of contemporary soul music, enlisting the work of previous collaborators James Poyser and Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson (The Roots, Al Green) as well as cutting edge producers like Madlib, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Karriem Riggins (Diana Krall) and the late J Dilla.
Erykah Badu will perform live for the very first time in her own headline shows in Australia, offering fans their first taste to see her in concert in exquisite and historic venues such as Sydney Opera House, Melbourne’s Palais Theatre and Perth’s picturesque Kings Park. For the latter two events, she will be joined by New Zealand’s Fat Freddy’s Drop.
The enigmatic seven piece soul act have won the world over with their hypnotic live performances which translate their impeccable records to a live setting in a similarly dynamic fashion to Badu’s razor sharp band. Their last album ‘Live At Roundhouse London’ showcased the incredible live show, which takes in highlights from their albums ‘Based On A True Story’ and ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’ and Australian audiences may be in for a taste of new material, which is hinted at a mid 2012 release.
Do not miss the captivating Erykah Badu as she tours across Australia for the first time in her own headline shows, joined by Fat Freddy’s Drop in Melbourne and Perth for some of the most musically exquisite engagements of the summer programme.
